Immortals 2
Alyson Noel
I read this book a couple of weeks ago and to tell you the truth, I don't really remember much from it. I remember thinking "Why am I reading this?" and "Why am I still reading this?" But it was a quick read and It kept me entertained enough on a night when I just wanted to escape my world and live in someone elses.
So I had to go back and skim over the end of the book to see what the heck happened. I guess it was an interesting enough ending... but it didn't really seem all that original. It seems like parts of it were taken from other things that I have read/watched in the past and just thrown into a blender.
I can't really say that this was an improvement over the first one. I'm not all that invested in the characters, I'll probably read the third one, but it won't be on my priority list of things to read.
SUMMARY:
Damen is teaching Ever how to master her abilities. They start making out, but Ever stops it from going any further than that, which is becoming a pattern in their relationship. Damen leaves just before Sabine comes home and talks to Ever about her possible anorexia. Ever tries to convince her that she doesn’t have an eating disorder, which leads to Sabine asking to meet Damen.
Ever starts to miss Riley, but pushes the feelings aside when she picks up Miles. He has a zit on his chin the day before opening night of his Hairspray debut. Once at school, he then insists that Ever and Damen stop being so cute, for the sake of the loveless. Stacia tries to trip Ever and she ends up moving Stacia’s backpack into her knee with her mind. Damen scolds here and then asks if she wants to go someplace special after Miles’ play, mentioning two swanky hotels. Later, while handing in her history test, she accidently touches Mr. Munoz’s hand and sees his morning, including how he met Sabine. She tells him that meeting her in the coffee shop was a fluke and moves on before he can question her.
At lunch, Ever meets a new guy named Roman. Miles notices that his zit is gone, and Ever briefly thinks that she has healing powers before Roman says that he gave in a salve to use in homeroom. Roman points out that he’s in Ever’s history class and that he may need her to tutor him in order to catch up. Ever says that she doesn’t think he’ll need it, but he says that she shouldn’t give him the benefit of the doubt. When alone, Haven asks why Ever doesn’t seem to like Roman. As Haven points out all of the new people that Ever started out hating, Ever thinks of the poisonous salve that Drina gave Haven and starts to worry about Miles. She pulls him out of class to check the salve and sees that its normal zit cream.
In art class, Ever finds that her spot has once again been taken by Roman. Damen seems to be okay with him, so Ever starts to think that Haven is right. She makes an effort, but is still having trouble liking Roman. After school, Damen says that his head feels funny. They meet back at Ever’s and he tells her about her past lives. They try to take a trip to Summerland, but are unable too. Just as they are making an attempt to make the portal together, Sabine comes home. They confirm their dinner plans for Saturday night. After her aunt leaves, Ever agrees to the reservations at the fancy hotel.
The next day at school, Roman hangs out with the A-list crowd at lunch. He makes his way back Ever’s group and claims that he is going to end the high school caste system by the end of the next week. Ever comments on his cockiness and notices that his aura. After school, she decides to go shopping. She thinks about asking Haven to join her, but she is too enamored with Roman. She runs into Stacia and Honor at Victoria’s Secret. Ever tries to ignore them, but Stacia touches her and sees something awful. She ends up knocking stuff over before they leave her alone.
Damen and Ever go to Mile’s premiere of Hairspray, sitting with Roman, Haven, and her boyfriend, Josh. Roman asks Damen for some of his drink, assuming that its spiked from how much he of it he drinks. Damen ignores the request as the show starts. After the show, Damen tries to manifest flowers for Miles, but fails. Ever ends up helping him create them. She notices that he still doesn’t seem quite right. Damen goes to pull the car around while Ever congratulates Miles. Just as Ever is about to confess her evening plans to Miles, Roman shows up and tells Ever that Damen left without her. She starts walking home and Roman offers her a ride. She refuses and keeps walking, making sure Roman is out sight before manifesting a car. She drives to the hotel she is supposed to meet him at, but he never checked in. She checks the beach before heading to Damen’s house. He’s not there either, so Ever decides to wait for him in his room full of ancient treasures. She wakes up and Damen still hasn’t been home. She leaves him another voicemail and a red tulip on the counter before she leaves.
On Monday morning, Ever drives Miles to school as usual. She is explaining her search for Damen on the way and when they pull into the parking lot, they see him. He acts like he doesn’t really care for ever or the 59 voicemails she left him before he walks away. Ever’s mind is swimming with questions, wondering especially why Damen has an aura. In class, Ever finds Damen flirting with Stacia before the teacher arrives. After the class has begun, she starts hearing Damen’s thoughts. He thinks that she’s crazy and stalking him. At lunch, Ever sits alone, looking at how all of the tables are pushed together and everyone is getting along, just as Roman predicted. He comes over to ask her out and she refuses. Later in Art class, Ever thinks she sees a flicker of the old Damen before Roman shows up. Roman brushes up against her and she notices that his thoughts seem planted, to organized to be real. Damen tells him not to waste his time on her.
Ever goes to pick up Miles as usual, but Miles has other plans. He is being picked up by Honor’s sexual confused boyfriend and forgot to tell Ever. She goes to school alone and finds that Damen has moved to sit closer to Stacia. Convinced that this entire ordeal is temporary, she ignores everyone taunting her. After class her teacher, Mr. Robins has a talk with her about the dark “stalking” road that she’s going down. She tries to convince him that she’s fine and Damen is just overreacting. Later, Haven shows her the Youtube video of Ever knocking stuff over at Victoria’s Secret, and then she ditches her for Honor. Roman approaches her again as she’s leaving, asking to go with her. Ever refuses again.
Ever goes to see Ava about the whole situation. Ava suggests that they attempt a visit to Summerland to see the Great Halls of Learning. After some grounding and cleansing rituals, they make it to their destination. Ever tells Ava how to manifest anything she wants, and Ava takes it a little far. Ever gets annoyed, wanting to find the Great Halls of Learning. When she turns back to Ava, she finds that her companion is gone. In her place are a set of twin girls, Romy and Rayne, who help her find the way. The twins inform her that only the worthy can enter and that she needs the akashic records (everything that has ever happened is in the records). Ever asks to see what she needs to know about Damen.
Damen grew up with his father being an alchemist. He was working on a healing sort of potion. However, some men come for the elixir. They kill Damen’s parents and he is forced to be a ward of the church. He meets Drina, also a ward, and they become companions. When she gets sick with the plague that is spreading, he makes the elixir again and gives some to her and all of the remaining orphans, which includes Roman. They live out their love story.
Ever is so pained by what she sees that she asks for the Great Hall to skip to the end. She sees an image of Roman smiling and Damen horribly aged. She regrets the mistake, but the Great Hall refuses to replay what she missed. Romy comes along to check on her and reunites her with Ava. They return to Earth and Ava is disappointed by the fact that she couldn’t bring anything back with her. They create a new type of shield for Ever so that she can tune people in or out.
Returning to school the next day, Ever approaches Roman, insisting she wants to get to know him. She ends up confirming her suspicions about him and his evil plans. Ever decides that she still needs to find out what Roman’s motive is to determine how to kill him, but before she can do that, she needs to find out how to lift the spell he’s put on everyone. She makes an attempt to go to Damen’s, but the guard won’t let her through.
Ever goes back to the Great Hall in Summerland and asks how to make everything go back to the way it was. She is shown how to go back to her life in Oregon. In her excitement, she runs into Romy and Rayne. Romy gives her red tulips and Ever is concerned. Romy explains that she just felt the need to give them to her and that they are only there to aid, nothing more.
Upon arriving back on the Earth plane, Ever goes to Ava for help. They break into Damen’s house, which now looks like a place that a normal person would live. Ever finds food in the fridge and eventually his bottles of elixir. She tastes one and can tell that it is poisoned (Damen wouldn’t notice because of how much he drinks). Just as they are switching out the bottles, Damen shows up. He kicks them out and dumps all the elixir down the drain.
Ever goes to school again. Her teachers are also starting to turn against her. Roman tells her that soon, they will be the only two left. Miles and Haven confront Ever “as her friends,” telling her to move on from Damen. In the meantime, Ever has been trying to recreate the elixir from what she saw at the Great Hall.
Ever goes to Summerland, seeking a cure for Damen. The Great Hall refuses to answer her, but she finds Ava is there. Ever grills her with questions about the moon phases. Eventually, Ava tells her that the blue moon is the second full moon in an astrological period. They find out that this is rare, but it will occur the next day. Ever decides that she is ready to go back to a normal life with her family. Ava agrees to make the antidote and give it to Damen if their time isn’t reset as well. They go to a store where Ava works to gather what Ever will need.
Ever goes home and starts preparing everything for her ritual to return home. Sabine starts knocking on the door and Ever has to rush to finish before letting her in. Her aunt voices her concern for her recent behavior and asks if it’s about Damen. Ever breaks down crying, wishing she had more time for goodbyes.
On her last day at her current school, Ever tells Mr. Munoz about the woman he keeps thinking about, Sabine. At lunch, she sees Damen looking old and decrepit. She yells for her classmates to wake up, but is unsuccessful until she does it in her head. Everyone starts going back to normal. Ever takes Damen to Ava’s house so that she can give him the antidote when it is ready. She stops by Romans in hopes of being able to kill him, but he is not home. She makes some notes of what she needs to remember and goes to Summerland.
Back in Oregon, Ever goes about her normal life. She finds the note that she wrote herself from the future, but can’t seem to decifer it. Eventually, they come to the car trip that killed her family. Riley turns to her to tell her that she can’t change the past before they are hit by a logging truck. She wakes up in her own time. Sabine made brownies and Riley sent Ever a sign in them (their initials). Ever heads out the door so that she can be in time to save Damen.
At Ava’s, Ever finds Roman blocking the way to Damen. He tells her that he wants to kill Damen because Damen killed Drina. Now ever knows how to kill Roman. She tells Roman that she was the one that killed Drina and Roman has a change of heart. Rayne is in a protective circle with Damen, trying to convince Ever that her and Romy are trying to help Damen. Ever decides to go with Roman’s antidote instead. She adds her blood to it, breaks the circle, and feeds him the antidote. Roman is thrilled that his plan worked. Roman added something to the antidote that would make sure that Damen and Ever cannot swap DNA. Roman leaves them and Damen wakes up, not remembering anything since Miles’ premier.
