The Chronicles of Narnia 6
C.S. Lewis
Polly Plumber finds Digory Kirke crying because he and his sick mother have moved to London while his father is away in India. Digory tells Polly about the crazy state of his Uncle Andrew, always locked up in his study in the attic. Polly offers for Digory to come over so that she can show him their attic. They start exploring and find a door. They were trying to get to the empty house next door, but end up finding Uncle Andrew's study instead. They find some rings paired up on the table, always a green one and a yellow one together in a pair. They end up being caught by Uncle Andrew, who wants them to stay. The Children are reluctant so Uncle Andrew offers Polly a yellow ring. She goes to touch one and disappears. Uncle Andrew explains that Digory must go after her so that she can use a green ring to come back. Digory begrudgingly agrees to go be his uncle's geaunie pig.
Digory comes out of a pool of water and sees a girl sleeping against a tree, not knowing who she is. Eventually, the two children get their memories back and realize that they are in a world between worlds. There are several pools of water that will lead them to all sorts of different worlds. After testing that the green ring will take them back home, they decide to check out another world. They mark the pool that will take them back home and jump into another one. Digory and Polly have to do some experimenting to find that the green ring allows them to go through a pool into another world, and the yellow ring will bring them back to the World Between Worlds.
They Land in a desolate world with a giant, red sun. They start looking around the ruins and find statues of people. Eventually, Digory finds a bell. Deciding that he will go crazy with curiosity if he doesn't ring it, he does so. This wakes up Jadis, the queen of the world. She explains that she conquered the world by using one word that would destroy everyone but her. Jadis then demands that Digory and Polly take her to their world so that she can rule it. She destroys a gate with her magic to start their journey. They try to escape but the witch is holding on to them and is transported to the World Between Worlds with them, where she looks older and frailer. The witch makes her into the children's world, landing in Uncle Andrew's study. Jadis starts making demands so that she can start ruling the world, and Uncle Andrew is more than happy to comply. The children follow them outside where Jadis starts making a spectacle of herself by demanding the people to obey her. Digory and Polly use the rings to transport the witch out of their world, taking Uncle Andrew and a cab driver, Frank, and his horse, Strawberry, with them.
Upon reaching the world between the worlds, the horse drags the entire mess of people into a pool. The new world is completely black until they hear singing. The voice is coming from a Lion that is creating the world. After the world is created, he also creates animals. Eventually, he takes two of every animal and makes them more human like, including Strawberry. The lion introduces himself as Aslan and explains that Digory must go on a quest to right his wrong of bringing evil into this brand new world, Narnia. He also makes Frank and his wife, Helen, the king and queen of Narnia. Polly offers to go with Digory and Strawberry agrees to take them. To quicken their journey, Aslan turns Strawberry into a winged horse named Fledge. The go after a fruit from a far away garden and just as Digory is about to retrieve it, he is tempted by the witch. She has already eaten the fruit. He denies her and takes the fruit back to Aslan. He tosses the fruit to make a tree that will help protect Narnia from the witch for some time. Aslan allows Digory to take a piece of fruit from the new tree back to his mother to heal her.
Digory does so and plants the core in the back yard, making a new tree. His mother gets better and his father returns from India thanks to a large inheritance. Eventually, the tree falls and Digory has it made into a wardrobe.
