The imprint from killing Caine won’t allow Violet to sleep. She hates that she has to use medication from Dr. Lee, who threatened her family (if she doesn’t keep working for the team). She wakes up in the morning and after a brief conversation with her mom, goes out to her animal graveyard to let their echoes deaden her imprint. Jay shows up and tells her that her friends miss her. She doesn’t feel like the same person and hates lying to them.
A man waits for an answer from a band he auditioned to be the guitarist for. He follows them around and even killed the previous one to have this third audition. They reject him, saying that he isn’t good enough and he throws an amp at the table they were previously sitting at. he decides there won’t be a fourth attempt.
Jay surprises Violet by meeting her at her first class. Chelsea comes to ask Violet about the new guy when she spots Rafe and Gemma. Oddly, Rafe has a lot of classes with Violet and Gemma has a lot with Jay. During a “get to know your partner” exercise, Rafe explains it was Sara’s decision to enroll them in White River. Since they didn’t actually do the assignment, Rafe makes up facts about her and her friends tease her at lunch. Gemma is in one of her later classes and saves Violet from having to sit by Grady.
Violet sits silently in Dr. Lee’s office like she has since he threatened her family. She asks for a refill of pills. He explains that Rafe and Gemma are enrolled in her school because she isn’t participating enough with the team. Back at home, her mother left a box of her grandma’s things in Violet’s room. She finds journals at the bottom and reads about her grandma’s experience of falling in love and telling the boy, Ian, about her ability. he avoided her and told everyone. Her grandma, Louise, was shunned and their family had to move.
While driving around, Violet ends up being drawn to a house. She decides to sneak in and finds a family dead on the couch looking like they were staged. She runs outside to vomit before calling Sara, who calls the police. When Uncle Stephen arrives, she answers his questions and welcomes his comfort. After a while, Violet confirms that the dead boy on the couch doesn’t have an echo.
Violet explains to her uncle that the boy doesn’t have an echo. He leads her to the kitchen where she sees a whole bunch of pictures. There is a girl in the family who is not with the bodies. Violet notices a school dance picture where she is with Grady and points it out to her uncle.
The wannabe rockstar returns to his “family” of squatting drug addicts. He supplies them, but doesn’t take any drugs for himself because he likes to be the clear headed leader. There is a girl there that Boxer has taken to. He can’t remember her name, so they call her Butterfly. The rockstar claims that he will be rich and famous.
Uncle Stephen stops by after leaving the scene to tell Violet that Grady is a suspect. They found pictures of the girl with red slashes drawn across her neck and wrists in his room. Everything else he told her seemed reasonable until this because that was how the family was murdered. The next day, Violet goes to see Grady and confirms that he doesn’t carry any imprints. Jay stops by later to give her a music box shaped like a turtle that plays the tune of her own imprint. She continues going through her grandma’s journals to learn more. Her grandma discovered a dead mouse without an imprint. Her future husband, John, and her experiment with a chicken. He kills it and they both have an imprint. She removes the heart and the echo and imprint disappear. Violet calls Sara to see if the boy’s heart was missing. Sara confirms this.
Jay picks up Violet for school and she decides to open up to him about her ability and what she read in her grandma’s journals. Her Uncle Stephen is there when they arrive and he explains his frustration at Violet going to see Grady. He wants her to have a happy, normal life, but she wants to help. He agrees that he will keep her updated. Chelsea is onto the fact that Violet is somehow involved with the murders. Jay and Rafe are still competing over Violet. After an awkward lunch, Violet goes to the class she has with Gemma and is slightly relieved to have someone she can talk to about what has been going on. Violet goes in for her session with Dr. Lee and hates to admit that she needs his help, but she does feel better after. She runs into Sam in the lobby and gives him a picture of the missing girl she took from the crime scene. He promises to keep it a secret and to let her know if she finds anything.
Ethan, the wannabe rockstar, goes to his parents house, hoping his dad isn’t home so that he can get a few things. However, his father is there and drunk. The drunkard picks a fight with his son because he talked to his strung out mother. Ethan gets beaten up and almost gets away. He is able to stop his father’s attack by pouring out his scotch. Ethan finds a baseball bat and uses it to kill his dad. He then smothers his mother with a pillow, sets the place on fire, and leaves.
Violet reads through her Grandma Louise’s journals. She finds out how she was lured to meet others with abilities, a group called the Circle of Seven, which sounds a lot like the Center. When the group finds out that they are being manipulated for immoral actions, one girl decides to leave, but ends up dead. Dr. Lee was a member and had the ability to make people feel calm. She realizes that he has used this on her before, when she was mad about Rafe and Gemma being at her school, She contemplates how long they have suspected her abilities. In the middle of the night, Violet wakes up and realizes her imprint is gone. Rafe calls to check on her and she realizes that he dug up Caine’s body and removed the heart. She tells him it doesn’t change anything, but he replies that it changes everything.
The next day at school, Rafe wants to talk. They decide to skip school just as their teacher walks in. They leave anyway and go to an old fashioned drive in restaurant on Rafe’s motorcycle. She tells him about the imprint being gone, but not the memories. She continues to tell him about Dr. Lee and her grandma’s journals. Lastly, she tells him about Dr. Lee’s threat to keep her on the team. They go back to Violet’s house and she gives him the journal about the Circle of Seven. When he takes her back to the school to get her car, Jay is waiting and pissed. He says he’s done with her lies and storms off before Violet can explain. She goes home and hides in her room with the journals.
Jay skips two days of school and it makes Violet ill that he is doing it to avoid her. She prepares herself to tell him everything and sends him a text promising him no more secrets.
Violet plans on going to the funeral of the family she found at the lake house. Her friends show up at her house and Chelsea starts asking questions. Violet leaves and Chelsea follows her to the funeral. Violet ends up telling her about her ability the best she can without revealing anything about the team. Chelsea takes it well.
Evan and his family are int he suburbs, looking for their next victims. He needs the cash so that the rest can get their fix and he can stay in charge. he remembers how Butterfly helped kill her parents while high, but lost it when her brother showed up. Colton killed him and took his heart. They find an obviously rich couple that “deserves” their brand of fun.
Violet uses the spare key to Jay’s car to get inside of it while he is working. When he gets off, she drives him to the river where they played as kids. She tells him everything, including Rafe’s feelings. She promises that her heart is his, and they make up.
Chelsea starts getting a little to observant and intrusive. Violet has to admit that Rafe and Gemma know her secret before telling her friend to back off. Later at the Center, Sam tells Violet that he has something for her after the meeting. Sara shows pictures of a murdered couple and Veronica, dead with a needle in her arm. Afterwards, Sam gives Violet a flyer for a band and tells her to meet him at the club where they play. Violet notices a cross on the flyer that was found at the murder scenes.
Evan’s “family” is falling apart. Colton is responsible for Butterfly’s death, and Ethan has to find a way to reunite them. He thinks he needs to put Colton in his place.
Violet goes to see Krystal and shows her the picture of the Circle of Seven. Krystal points out her mom in the picture. Violet explains her idea that the team was brought together because of relations to the Circle members. She calls Rafe to update him. he thinks Sara doesn’t really know what is going on. He then asks about the exchange between Violet and Sam.
Evan waits for Colton outside of a house where he is getting high, remembering how his mother used to leave him outside to do the same. Evan tries to tell Colten that he needs to keep a lower profile. Colton refuses and Evan beats him to a bloody pulp.
Violet takes Rafe with her to meet Sam at the club. she points out the cross from the murder scenes on the bass drum. However, none of the band members have an imprint. Back at home, Violet re-reads some of her grandma’s journals, but gets frustrated when she doesn’t learn anything new. She listens to the music box Jay gave her.
Evan, Boxer, and Kisha look for a girl for Colton, who is struggling to survive the wounds Evan gave him.
Violet confronts Dr. Lee about his participation in the Circle of Seven. He warns her that he is not the one threatening her, only a messenger. He admits that Muriel (her grandma’s friend in the Circle) wasn’t killed and is actually Sam’s grandmother. Later, Violet still thinks there is something important about the band with the cross logo. She finds another performance and asks Chelsea to go with her. Chelsea invites Jay and Rafe. They make an effort to dress appropriately for the occasion, which makes Violet glad that Jay is there.
Evan is at the same club as Violet and her friends. He finds Chelsea and decides that she will be Colton’s girl. He sees the perfect opportunity when the four of them separate.
While listening to the band in the crowd, Violet recognizes the imprints of the echoes from the lake house. She tries to find the person carrying them, but is stuck in the crowd.
Evan roofies Chelsea and drags her out of the bar once she gets tipsy. He has to get her out of there before her friends come back.
Jay is able to get Violet out of the crowd and has to stop her from following the imprint. They go back to find Rafe and Chelsea, but Chelsea is gone. A guy near by says she left with a guy that had the brimstone cross tattooed on his neck. Rafe calls Sara and they split up. violet is able to pick up the imprint. She and Jay follow it.
Evan hears Violet call for Chelsea, but refuses to give her up as Kisha suggests. They break into a nearby foreclosed house.
Violet knows where they took chelsea because of the imprints. She tells Jay to call Rafe and slips away.
Evan thinks he is safe until he hears Violet calling for Chelsea in the house. He gets Kisha to help him get her up the stairs.
Violet is following the imprint and hears another one. Jay comes in and tries to stop her from going after the killer, but ends up leading his blinded girlfriend to find Chelsea. Upstairs, the echoes split up and they follow the sound of a moan.
Evan told Kisha to hide. He takes Chelsea to another room and she moans. He hears Jay and Violet approach and stabs Chelsea in the gut.
Jay rushes into the room, breaking down the door. Evan jumps out the window and Jay follows. Violet finds Chelsea on the floor and then she sees the wound. She applies pressure, yelling for help. Violet sees smoke rising from CHelsea as paramedics pull her away from her friend. A cop questions her and she tells them there is someone in the attic. They take her outside to the ambulances where Rafe explains that Jay landed safely out the window and beat up the killer, who is now in custody. She reunites with Jay. A stretcher comes out with Kisha, who overdosed, but is stable.
Violet waits anxiously at the hospital Sara fills her in on finding the rest of Evan’s “family.” She is able to go see Chelsea and Rafe is there. They seem close and Violet feels like she is intruding. She gets a moment alone with Chelsea, who tells her she thought she saw an angel before she died. Violet leaves Chelsea to rest, taking a familiar PTSD therapy card with her.
Violet finds an encouraging letter from her grandma. She meets with Dr. Lee to tell him she is staying on the team because she wants to. She then throws his card on the ground and tells him to stay away from her friend.
