Violet digs through the snow in a drugged haze. A man behind her with a shotgun admits that he didn’t want to kill anyone else, but she found the body...
Five months later, Violet sits at a lunch table with her friends. chelsea makes a loud comment about the new guy as he walks by. He thinks Violet said it Jay invites the new guy and his sister to sit with them, but they decline because of Chelsea’s comment, which Jay knows was her. Violet and Chelsea have plans to go to town and shop over the weekend. Later that night, Violet and Jay make out on the couch, trying to keep themselves restrained from teenage hormones.
Violet is up early from a reoccurring nightmare about a man chasing her. Her dad tries to reassure her that she and Jay are safe. Chelsea picks her up for their shopping trip in Seattle. While waiting for a ferry, Violet hears an echo that sounds like a harp. Telling Chelsea to wait for her, she finds that it is coming from a sealed cargo container. Chelsea scares her when she makes it know that she followed. Violet has to leave her investigation behind.
Violet wakes up from a dream about being stuck in a metal box. he wakes up knowing it was about he echo at the shipyard. She drives down there and finds the container again. She goes to a pay phone and dials 911. She hesitates before telling the operator that she heard someone trapped in a red cargo container. She hangs up, gets in her car, and leaves with a felling that she has made a mistake.
Not wanting to go home, Violet goes to Jay’s. His mom is leaving for work and sends her up to his room. He invites Violet into his bed and is able to get some sleep. She wakes up and ends up telling Jay where she went. He promises not to rat her out to anyone and she promises to call him next time. The next morning, she gets a txt from jay to check the news. Violet sees that they found a four year old boy from Utah in the container. Violet decides to stay home from school.
Violet goes back to school, but is disconnected and fuzzy about what is going on around her. Jay seems to anchor her at least some, but she can’t move on until the body is buried.
An obsessed girl waits for Jay in the school hallway. She follows him and Violet to the parking lot and wishes she were in Violet’s place.
On the sixth day after the body was discovered, it was laid to rest and Violet comes out of her stupor. It seems that in the past week, everyone has grown to love the new guy, Mike. Violet gets a little jealous over how much time Jay spends with him but he seems to realize this and sets aside some alone time the form. Violet gets a few calls with Seattle area codes on her phone. When she calls the number back, it is the FBI. She hangs up and decides to ignore it for now.
Jay shows up to take Violet out. He takes her to the park, which he has lit up with glow sticks for a picnic. On the way home, Jay has to stop at Mike’s house to drop off his wallet. Violet is annoyed by the interruption to their perfect evening. Jay goes inside for a few minutes while Violet steams in the car. Mike’s sister, Megan, gives a flirty goodbye as he leaves, until she sees Violet in the car. They leave with Violet getting a headache. A red pickup pulls in. Jay takes Violet home and the headache recedes.
After school the next day, Violet is confronted by Sara Priest from the FBI in the parking lot. Sara inquires about the body and how Violet found him. Violet feels sick and doesn’t know who to answer. Sara gives Violet her card and says tat she will have to answer questions sooner or later. Violet thinks the FBI wants to make her a lab rat.
Violet is woken up from bed by a flash of light. She goes outside to see what is causing it and finds that it is an echo on a cat left in a box by her car. She buries it and wonders who is testing her.
The girl who left the dead cat in the box watches Violet’s reactions. She is mad that violet isn’t scared. The girl wants to hurt Violet.
Chelsea constantly wants to talk about Mike and it gets her in trouble while at the library with Violet. She looked at his records in the school office and found out that they move a lot. Chelsea sets up a big night at the movies and then tells everyone its cancelled except Mike so they end up on a double date with Jay and Violet.
The foursome goes to the JavaHut. Chelsea points out a boy who happens to be the one that was with Sara Priest. He leaves and the night continues. At the movie theater, the boy, Rafe, confronts Violet on her way to the bathroom. He tells her that she will have to talk to Sara sooner or later. He also tells her that it gets easier, indicating he too might be special. He gives her his card. Violet runs around to see Jay, who storms back inside the theater. When Violet has the guts to go in, Jay tells her that she can’t keep hiding things from him.
Violet goes to talk to her Uncle Stephen about everything that has been going on, but chickens out and makes up an excuse as to why she came to the police station. She goes home and calls back someone from her missed call list.
Violet learns that Sara isn’t an agent for the FBI anymore, but is hired as a psychiatrist by different agencies. Violet asks about Mike and Sara tells her that his mother went missing, foul play suspected from an ex-husband, but the body was never found. Sara takes Violet into a room to try to identify the little boy’s killer in a lineup. She is assaulted by too many imprints. After telling Sara that the killer isn’t in the line up, she goes to the bathroom to throw up. Rafe guards the door to make sure no one disturbs Violet. On her way out to her car in the parking garage, she runs into the men from the lineup. She realizes that the men were not suspects and wonders if she passed or failed Sara’s test.
Back home, Violet’s mom makes dinner and they talk about her abilities. Her mom explains that it is only meant to be a secret if that is what Violet wants. Violet goes through the files Sara gave her (the little boy and Mike’s mom).
The girl lies in bed and hears her drunk father come home. She is relieved when she hears the intoxicated monster that resembles her dad settle in. She is then filled with rage over her mom leaving, people having what she wants, and not being strong enough to save herself.
Violet drives around aimlessly trying to think things through. She ends up at Jay’s and asks him to talk. They start making out, but agree that once Violet is able to tell him everything, they will continue intimately.
Meeting up with her friends at lunch after being late to school from lack of sleep, Violet finds out that Chelsea is manipulating Mike to test him. He has attempted to grow a mustache for her, but it isn’t really working out. Violet sees the imprint from the dead cat’s killer but is unable to find the person as he/she walks away.
The girl was taking a quick look at Violet but didn’t expect the other girl to start coming toward her. She wishes she could open up to someone about her situation, but believes that it is impossible.
After school, there is a note left for Violet on Jay’s windshield. “Rosie is dead/Violet is Blue/You can’t see me/But I’m watching you.” She is too freaked out to go home alone so Violet goes to her mom’s art studio and makes a gravestone our of wood and paint for Rosie the cat. She goes to the coffee shop and Chelsea invites her to a supervised weekend at Mike’s family cabin. Violet decides it would be nice to get away from whatever is stalking her.
Violet keeps getting mysterious hang up calls from an unknown number and eventually decides to ignore the. She and Jay fornicate after she tells him that she is worried about talking to him about her secrets. The next night, Violet goes for a run, but a windstorm makes her take a shortcut home. She is distracted by the flashing imprint from the cat’s killer and follow it to Mike’s house. She knows it is Megan stalking her and that it is tie to tell Jay about it. Back home, Violet’s mom starts planning her seventeenth birthday party.
After waiting out a power outage, Violet goes to her room and calls Jay. She tells him that Megan is messed up and explains what has been going on. He doesn’t believe her and she hangs up on him. Violet is woken up in the middle of the night by the “unknown caller.” She tells the person on the other end that she knows everything. Megan hangs up on her.
Violet lays in bed all day instead of going to school. She ignores Jay’s call and when he texts her, she says she doesn’t want to see him. Chelsea comes over and assures Violet that she and Jay will make up. Violet decides to meet with Rafe, but neither wants to talk about their own experiences. They seem to have an odd connection when he grabs her arm, it shocks her. Rafe hints at his ability by ordering Violet’s favorite coffee and wishing her a happy birthday.
The family is all together for Violet’s birthday and she attempts to participate. There is a knock on the door and Uncle Stephen answers the door and comes back to tell Violet that Jay wants to talk. Violet doesn’t want to and excuses herself to her room. After everyone is gone, she goes downstairs for cake and finds a present. She opens it and finds a picture frame with hers and Jay’s second grade pictures. She knows its from Jay. She puts it back in the bag, furious with him for ruining the end of her birthday when she was just starting to feel better.
The girl wakes up at night to clean so she can avoid her father. Her brother comes out to help and she envies how strong he is.
Violet spends all day at school trying to avoid Jay and Megan. When Jay approaches her, she tells him to leave her alone and he does. After school, Chelsea tells Violet that Jay is in really bad shape too. After taking her friend home, Violet goes to the coffee shop and just sits in her car. She sees Megan, but there isn’t an imprint. Violet goes to Jay’s work and tells him everything after he begs for her forgiveness Jay isn’t mad. He is worried about who is after Violet.
Jay agrees to give Violet one week to do things her way before he tells her uncle what has been going on. Violet goes to see Sara and tells her about her stalker. Sara agrees to help and asks if Violet has any enemies. She realizes that she hasn’t seen Lissie Adams since she found the dead cat. Sara understands that Violet isn’t ready to tell her secret, but wants confirmation that there is something different about her.
Violet wakes up in a good mood, feeling like a wight has been lifted. However, Jay is worried enough for the both of them. At school, Chelsea reminds Violet that they are all supposed to go to the cabin for the weekend. Violet is feeling guilty over accusing Megan, who will be there. Violet debates going while Chelsea and Mike beg.
Megan is obsessed with Jay because he made her feel special. She fantasizes while watching him, Violet, and Mike from behind a pillar. She crumples up her hall pass to go to the counselor’s office, deciding she’d rather fade away than ask for help.
To alleviate her guilt about suspecting Megan, Violet calls Rafe and tells him to meet her at Serena Russo’s ex-husband, Roger Harman’s house. She decides not to wait for Rafe and digs up a body wrapped in a tarp under a pine tree behind Roger’s trailer. She is relieved when Rafe shows up and they meet at a fas station to call and tell Sara what Violet found.
The next day at school, Violet gets a pass to the nurses office to give her a chance to call Sara, who tells her it was a dog in the grave whose neck had been broken. Violet is embarrassed that she sent them after a dog, but is reminded of the cat that was left by her car.
Chelsea spends the entire trip up to the cabin complaining about being car sick. They stop at a connivence store that has a pay phone where people leave messages since there really isn’t any cell service. Violet doesn’t see that there is already a message for her. They get to the cabin and Megan is already there and seems annoyed
Everyone is playing out int he snow except Megan. Violet is left alone for a few minutes and feels the draw of an echo. She follows it out into the woods and tries to dig it up, but the ground is frozen. Jay finds her and starts leading her back. This particular echo is really calling and is painful to Violet’s head. She passes out.
Violet wakes up at the cabin and everyone is concerned. She says it was just dizziness and everyone lets it go. Megan comes out of her room to help with dinner. Claire asks about their dad and Megan admits that he drinks. Violet tries to include her while they all sit around and talk. Megan keeps to the fringes. Eventually they all go to sleep.
When Mike and megan’s dad arrives at the cabin, Violet is woken up by the imprints of echoes he carries. The flashing light from the cat and the pain of whatever is buried in the woods are both present. She sneaks out, takes an axe and heads back to where the body is buried.
Megan hears Violet leave the cabin and is concerned. She realizes that she misdirected her anger at Violet when it was really her dad that she is mad at. Megan hears her dad and looks out to see him following Violet’s tracks with a shotgun.
Violet digs with the axe. Mike’s dad comes along and confesses that he killed his wife because she was leaving him for another man and taking the kids with her. He buried her in the woods because she had always loved it there. He is sorry that Violet found her because he now has to kill her too.
Jay wakes up and waits for Violet to return to her sleeping bag. When she doesn’t, he checks the cabin. When he realizes Megan is gone too, he wakes Mike. They get ready to go look for them (though Jay knows where Violet is) and tells Chelsea and claire to wait there.
Megan heard her father’s entire confession. He apologizes, but she already knows that he is the monster that killed her mom. Jay and Mike arrive and learn the truth. mike takes the shotgun from his father and Jay talks him out of killing his own dad. Jay takes Violet and Megan to get help after Mike promises not to do anything stupid. When they get to the cabin, the police are there. They hear a shotgun go off.
Mike comes out of the woods without an echo, but is handcuffed because they suspect him. Violet takes Sara out to the body. Violet sees Mr. Russo’s double butterfly imprint from his own suicide. Sara explains that Mr. Russo threatened the ex-husband, Hartman, and killed his dog. Rafe knew Violet was in danger.
Violet decides to trust Sara. She points out the small boy’s killer in a lineup, passing Sara’s test. Violet and Rafe have an understanding about their relationship. Jay drags Violet to a surprise parter for her belated birthday.
