When I read the first Mercy Thompson book, Moon Called, I was excited about the series. However, after reading Blood Bound, I’m less optimistic. I felt like this book was practically repeating the plot from the first with some minor changes. There really just didn’t seem to be anything new about it that REALLY added to the overall story.
I plan on reading the rest of this series (I’ve already started the third) but this book has definitely slowed me down on the process.
SUMMARY: SPOILERS ALERT
So Mercy owes Stephan the vampire a favor and he decides the best way for her to repay it is to go with him (in coyote form) to track down a menace vampire, Littleton. As it turns out, the vampire is also a sorcerer and has combined with a demon. Stephan and Mercy prove to be no match for it, so the vampire seethe and the wolves team up to go after it. Herein lies the problem: the vampires can’t handle him and the demon makes the wolves go a little crazy. So Daniel dies, Stephan and Ben go missing, and Warren is found almost dead in a dumpster.
The vampires know that Mercy is a walker and is able to kill vampires, even though she herself does not know it. So they hire her to track and kill Littleton with the help of the vampire, Andre. Since she can get little out of the vampires on how to kill their kind, she asks the fey for help. They give her weapons that will help her along the way. She also finds out that ghosts don’t like the sorcerer. Since Mercy can see ghosts, this helps her track down Littleton’s lair. She also receives help from Stephan’s “menagerie” (house of humans willing to let vampires feed off of them).
Once she finds Littleton, she learns that she is using the missing vampires and werewolves as entertainment by making them fight each other. Mercy ends up killing him (after having to be healed by Stephan) and figures out that Andre is the responsible party for the creation of the sorcerer. However, the vampire seethe decides that Andre doesn’t matter because there was no permanent damage to them. So she hunts him down and kills him in his sleep. Stephan and another vamp, Wizard, help cover it up.
