I actually had a real, live person suggest this series to me (usually, I use Amazon) and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought this was a really good book! I read most of it in one day because I just didn’t want to put it down. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
I was so happy when I first started reading and the mythology was laid out for me like a word-map. I knew most of the rules pertaining to this particular universe, so I wasn’t really lost on the details like I have been in a lot of books.
Speaking of “a lot of books,” this was the first book that I have read in a long time that wasn’t YA. I think I was a little nervous about moving into actually fantasy from YA, but this proved that I had nothing to worry about! I fount that at least in this case, the story was better written, the characters were likeable, the plot was actually good, and I didn’t have to deal with high school drama.
SUMMARY: SPOILERS AHEAD!
In a world of vampires, werewolves, the fey, and witches, Mercy Thomson is not only a VW mechanic. She is also a skin-walker that can change into a coyote at will. Literally raised by wolves (of the were variety), Mercy knows a lot about them. So when one walks into her shop looking for some employment, she’s willing to help Mac out. She learns that he and his girlfriend were attacked by werewolves and she didn’t survive the change (which is rather common). He was then captured, sold, and experimented on until he escaped and found himself being taken to the local Alpha, Adam, by Mercy. Shortly after this, Adam’s house is attacked, Mac is dead on Mercy’s front Porch, and Adam’s daughter, Jesse, is kidnapped.
Mercy has a bad feeling about calling the pack in to assist their wounded leader, so she takes him to Montana where Bran, the Merrok (kind of like a were-president) lives. This is also where Mercy grew up, so she runs into many old faces, including the wolf that she was in love with, Sam (who never loved her, but wanted her as a mate so that he could have children). Eventually, Adam has healed well enough to travel, so Mercy, Adam, and Sam head back to find Jesse. They stay with the only person in the pack that they can trust while Adam finishes healing and try to figure out what is going on.
Eventually, they find that Gerry has set up an elaborate scheme to keep his father alive by coaxing him into a fight with Bran. He enlisted the help of Adam’s old war buddy (who switches sides and becomes the poster boy for their coming out campaign) and a guy in the pack that was into real estate (location of kidnapped), and the local witch’s grandson. He even paid off the local vampire clan to keep them unlisted (which Mercy had to investigate in the undead’s territory). Eventually, everyone is safe and sound. Mercy and Adam go on a date, and Sam becomes jealous because he has already decided that Mercy is his mate.
