Ruby had reoccurring dreams while she was at Thurmond about being old and then time going in reverse. She would become a child as her view of the fast moving world changed. She no longer dreams about who she used to be or reclaiming what she lost.
On a mission with the Children’s League, Ruby uses her ability on a guard. She hasn’t had much success on mission in the past, but this time it works. The rest of the team is lead by Rob into the bunker and Vida and Ruby are told to stay behind. It isn’t long before Vida is ready to go down and help the others, but Ruby stops her with her seniority just before some sort of explosion goes off right where Vida was heading. Another guard comes after them and Ruby tries to fight him off before using her ability on him. Vida throws him off Ruby and they start to move. They see three more guards with a hooded prisoner. Ruby thinks it is their objective, Prisoner 27, and agrees to take all the blame if they are unsuccessful. Vida uses her mind to shove the guards away before they can react. Ruby removes the beat up prisoner’s hood to see a boy she knows. She realizes why Cate tried to keep her away from the mission.
Ruby’s introduction to HQ in Los Angeles did not impress her. The entire facility is located underground below a factory and Cate had to take her in through an old sewer tunnel. Cate introduced Ruby to the rest of her team of kids: Vida (Blue), Jude (Yellow), and Nico (Green; technical, was experimented on). The other teams of kids are each strictly one color. Cate announced Martin was transferred to Kansas and Ruby will take over as team leader. Ruby tried to turn down the position with protests, but Cate left them to check in with John Alban. Jude suggested they get dinner, but Vida grabbed Ruby’s ponytail. She knew Ruby ran. Vida threatened Ruby’s life if she ever hurt Cate again. Ruby fed off the girl’s anger, but didn’t tell any of them anything in her determination not to get close to anyone there. Cate came to take Ruby to meet Alban and they went to an interrogation room. Alban was behind tinted glass with several other agents of the League. Two men brought in a woman whose hands were zip-tied and head was covered with a sack. They asked Ruby to find out about the girl’s mission near San Francisco dealing with a contact called Ambrose. Ruby repeated the location and contact over and over to bring it up in the girl’s mind. She touched her wrist and saw her shoot a man in the back of the head. The papers from a blue folder flew into a pond. Ruby told Alban and the others what she saw. They took the girl away and Ruby asked what would happen to her. No one would tell her and she was dismissed. Ruby knows she would have to bide her time to escape and hoped the League doesn’t ruin her like Liam described his brother, Cole.
When they arrive back at HQ, Ruby and Vida are surprised Jude isn’t there to greet them like usual. Vida is relieved and takes off. Ruby goes to check in with Cate, but can’t find her. She finds Jude and Nico in the atrium. The two boys are worried because a Green from team one (never leaves HQ), Blake, went on a mission and hasn’t returned. They think it has something to do with the three of them overhearing a conversation about getting Alban back on track and getting rid of the freaks. Ruby keeps herself from believing in the conspiracy. A suit comes to tell her Alban wants to meet with her in an hour. She points out the boys are going to be late to class and walks them there to make sure they go. Ruby goes to Alban’s office and listens in as he tells Rob no to his plan. Cole catches her and they go into the office together. Rob is furious with Ruby for disobeying his orders, but Cole sticks up for her because she saved him. Alban sides with Cole and dismisses Rob. He has Ruby stay to look into Cole’s memories. Cole tells her she is looking for a small black flash drive containing the information he lost. He says he didn’t get a good look at the person that attacked and captured him. Ruby takes his hand, but Cole seems to be concentrating on everything but the flash-drive. Ruby finally finds the memory. She is Cole as he runs away from PSFs. They eventually catch him and throw him in the back of a van. He looks up to see Liam disappear into the night.
Ruby wakes up on the floor with Cate yelling at Alban for using a kid from her team without letting her know. She assures Cate she is fine and Alban sends her away so Ruby can tell him what she learned from Cole. Ruby is furious that she worked so hard to keep the League away from Liam just to have Cole drag him back in. She tells Alban it was a woman fitting the description of her first grade teacher and Cole plays along. Alban sends him away and pulls out the file of Ruby’s details about Thurmond. Ruby had just about given up hope the Children’s League was actually helping children. Alban starts to say he is interested, but an agent comes in to tell him the Professor had an issue with Snowfall. The adults suddenly have an issue with Ruby being there and she leaves the room. She listens at the door for any more information. She then goes to the atrium to ask Nico if he could find anything. He pales when she tells him what she is looking for. Jude rushes into the room to tell them Blake has returned in a body bag. They go confirm and Nico takes off. They find him in an empty computer lab with downloaded footage from a security camera. Blake was working on a server and went to hide from a security guard. One of the League’s agents turns his gun and purposefully shoots Blake in the back. Jude wants to expose what happened, but Ruby warns him not to tell anyone. She thinks about the grenade that Rob had set off where she and Vida were supposed to be standing. She decides she has to get near enough to Rob and his friends to fix the problem.
Ruby feels feverish, so she heads to the showers. Cole is sitting on a bench when she gets there and he drags her into a stall and turns on the water. He explains it is the only place the League doesn’t record. Cole tells her he was in an undercover operation working security at a government lab, Leda. He was able to download files onto a flash-drive using a scientist’s credentials and his friends on the security team let him leave without searching him. Liam came to Cole three hours before he was supposed to be extracted. When he left, Liam took Cole’s jacket by mistake with the flash drive still in it. Ruby demands to know what is on the flash drive and Cole indicates it is a cure and proof the government started IAAN. He tells Ruby she needs to get out and find Liam and get the drive back. The information could help sway Alban away from Rob’s influence. Rob’s plan is to send Greens into camps with explosives and detonate them. Ruby’s intel of Thurmond helped them make the plan. Cole points out how the people at HQ are now Rob’s instead of his. She tells Cole he has to cover for her disappearance from whatever east coast operation she gets away from and watch out for the rest of her team. She explains Blake’s death. Cole tells her to keep it quiet and leaves her in the shower. Two weeks later, Ruby gets a folder for an operation in Massachusetts. She sees Jude (is only 14 and therefore cannot be active) is going with her. Ruby storms off to find Cate and feels someone following her. She ignores it and bursts into the atrium to find Cate. She says she has already pointed out Jude isn’t ready for an operation, but Alban insisted. Cate tells Ruby that Rob will be their minder as he approaches. She tells her to watch out for Jude.
On the plane ride out to Boston (from a company, Leda Corp, that serves both Gray’s government and the League), Ruby realizes just how unprepared Jude is for the operation. He is scared by the turbulence and constantly fidgeting. He asks about the Beta team. At first, Ruby yells at him for being ridiculous, but then tells him what she knows. Jude asks her to keep talking to keep the sound of his parents’ fighting out of his mind. She tells him the story of Watership Down. In Boston, Ruby and Jude ride in an ambulance with Rob and Reynolds (one of the people Jude overheard Rob talking to). They take Jude to the Professor’s Harvard building to clear the security measures. When Jude returns to the ambulance, Ruby takes off her coat and puts on Liam’s Leather Jacket. Jude finds her coming out of the driver’s side of the ambulance. She grabs him and they take off. When they are far enough away, Ruby uses the communicator to ask Rob the names of the two kids he killed the night before they met. She asks why he would bother to pull them out of a camp just to kill them in an alley. She drops the communicator when he doesn’t answer and she pulls Jude into a crowd of protesters. They start to march right into a line of police in riot gear. Ruby and Jude are separated. Jude panics and ends up lighting up a few houses that haven’t had electricity in years. National Guardsmen rush to him and Ruby takes the butt of a gun to the head trying to protect him.
Ruby wakes up handcuffed on the floor in the back of a van with two PSFs driving. Jude is handcuffed and gagged sitting on a bench and panicking. Ruby calms him down and reminds him they went through a training scenario very similar to their situation. Jude concentrates and kills all the electricity in the van. It comes to a dead stop immediately and a semi truck hits the van. One PSF is non-responsive and the other goes to the back door to check on the kids. Ruby grabs him, has him unlock her cuffs, and takes his gun. She has him start walking back to Boston. When the truck driver sees Ruby, he offers to help them. Jude is excited, but Ruby knows he just wants to collect the bounty for turning in a psy kid. She points the gun at him and tells him to leave. He does. Ruby and Jude take off. She tells him everything except about hers and Liam’s actual relationship. She says Liam was with her and Cate when Ruby got out of the camp. Jude says he heard about Liam’s escape from the GA location, but never new him. They go until they come to a neighborhood. Ruby runs at a woman getting into her car and has her drive them to the nearest transportation hub. On the way, she practices keeping the connection without touch. When they arrive at the train station, Ruby sends the woman in to buy two tickets as close to Wilmington, NC as possible. She returns with the tickets and Ruby sends her home. They have ten hours to wait until their train leaves. With only a few hours left, a group of off duty PSFs come in. Ruby and Jude move to the floor and try to stay unnoticed. Suddenly, Vida comes in with Beta team. Ruby drags Jude into the family restroom. After carefully counting out the silence, Ruby tells Jude they need to make a run for it. When she opens the door, Vida is starring right at them.
There is a standoff between Vida and Ruby until Jude shocks Vida just enough to knock her out. They make a run for the bus terminal and run into a driver named Andy. Ruby is about to touch him when Jude stops her. He asks Andy for help and he agrees. The kids ride in the luggage compartment huddled together for warmth. After the bus is stopped and searched by a PSF, Andy Pulls over down the road to let them into seats. When they get to NC, Andy tells them the best roads to take to get to Wilmington. Ruby steals a car and they eventually arrive in Liam’s parent’s neighborhood. Ruby parks down the street and leads Jude behind the houses. Liam’s parents house looks like it has been empty a while. Vida appears behind them. She explains Yellows have a rubber coated tracker in their clothes that she used to find them. Ruby cuts it out of Jude’s collar and crushes it with her knife. Vida sees something behind Ruby and pulls out her gun. Ruby turns around and immediately runs to Chubs, who hugs her.
Vida keeps her gun pointed at Chubs as she and Jude approach. Chubs protectively puts Ruby behind him and pulls out a knife. Their standoff is interrupted by the arrival of four PSFs alerted by the motion sensors on the house. Chubs asks Ruby to trust him. They go inside through a window while Vida and Jude hide elsewhere outside. Chubs zip-ties Ruby’s hands together and says it will work better if she appears knocked out. She falls to the floor just before the PSFs enter. Chubs explains he is a skip tracer and shows them ID. He says Ruby is not in the database and has to have paperwork done for him to collect on her. They agree to let him take her in and leave. Chubs points out they need to get out of there, but doesn’t want to take Vida or Jude with them. Ruby asks him to trust her and he does.
They get in Chubs’ SUV and take off with Vida and Jude in the backseat that is separated with a grate. Vida gets bored and starts picking fights. When she slams Ruby’s head against the dashboard, Chubs pulls over to make it very clear they don’t use their abilities against each other. Ruby tells her story going back far enough to fill in Vida and Jude. Chubs then explains he was recognized at the hospital he was taken to and his dad was contacted. He had to be transferred to another hospital once stabilized and they gave him a new identity. He was then sent to upstate New York to recover. An old woman kept him in her barn and looked after him for four months. When he was recovered, his parents got him the fake papers to become a skip tracer. They stop at a campsite for the night and set up a tent and fire. Ruby and Chubs go to the car for food and he tells her he is furious with her and will never forgive her if she goes back to the League when they could all be together again. They go to bed later, but Ruby is woken up in the middle of the night from Vida leaving the tent. Ruby follows her and sees her using a lit up device.
Ruby immediately runs to Vida and tackles her. They end up physically fighting each other until Chubs uses his ability to separate them. He gets them all back to the campsite and tells Vida to start explaining. She tells them Cate and Cole have been planning it all together. Nico showed them the video of Blake being shot. They decided to send Vida out and gave her a chatter (green made devise Alban refuses to let agents use in the field) and has been feeding Vida information. Cole didn’t want anyone but Vida to know about Cate’s involvement in case they were captured. The chatter vibrates and Chubs checks the message.
Cate has sent word that Liam was sighted in Nashville. Chubs checks his tablet for information but nothing has been shared on the PSF network. When alone, Ruby searches for Clancy on it, but there is not information on him either. While on the road, Chubs stops at a rest stop and takes his time getting stuff from the vending machines. When he gets back in the car, Ruby points out how reckless he is being and that anyone there could have reported a sighting of them. As they approach Nashville, there are signs warning that the city is closed. Chubs speeds up and Vida confirms from Cate that the city was flooded. When a guard comes out to stop them, Chubs tells them to make sure they have their seat belts on. Ruby jerks the wheel to keep them from going through the guard and gate. Vida uses her ability to press the pedal to get the car out of there quickly. Chubs is furious and says he blames Ruby for Liam being alone. Ruby tells him he is being too careless. Chubs is angry and having the League kids with them. Vida and Jude get out of the car and Ruby heads into the woods with them. A few minutes later, Vida sends her back for Chubs, saying she is giving Ruby the choice to come back if she wants to be in the League. Ruby goes back to find Chubs crying. They make up and go to join the others. When they get to where they were waiting, Vida and Jude are gone and the extra tracks indicate they were taken.
Ruby takes off running and leaves Chubs behind with the supply bags they had packed. Ruby stops when she comes to a river and the tracks disappear. Chubs catches up and they realize the gang of blues must have taken Vida and Jude. Ruby sees a gun in the brush and knocks Chubs to the ground. They are suddenly surrounded by Blues and taken hostage. They are launched to the other side of the frozen water and then taken to some make-shift rafts to get into a warehouse. The leader, Michael, says he is taking them to the Slip Kid, but when they meet him, it is a boy named Knox and not Clancy. Knox is surrounded by starving girls wearing only t-shirts and shorts. He takes a sheet from one girl to give to Michael as a reward. Ruby tells him they are heading east to find East River. She says they don’t know Vida or Jude, but Jude quickly exposes that lie. Knox says the two Blues are welcome to stay, but the other two will have to prove themselves. Olivia (from East River) vouches for Ruby saying she lead the escape from the PSFs. A guy named Brett chimes in to agree, but Ruby doesn’t know him. Knox says they will keep Vida inside, but the others are to be stripped of their coats and kept outside.
They meet up with Olivia outside and she tells them her group was followed by PSFs when they left East River. They had to split up to evade capture. She was taken by the faux Slip Kid’s gang. People that tried to escape are caught by Knox’s patrols and don’t come back. He has been trading kids he deems useless to the National Guard for supplies. She assumes they are there for Liam and leads them to the white tent full of sick kids. Liam is in the middle of them. Olivia explains he showed up with a bug he couldn’t shake over a week before. Knox refuses to help the sick kids. Liam recognizes Chubs, who thinks he had pneumonia. Ruby decides she is going to use her ability to ruin Knox.
Ruby lets her fury lead her back to Knox’s warehouse. She touches the reluctant guards hand and tells him to sit. She goes inside and runs into Brett. She tells Knox there are more supplies available and she will get them for them to earn her keep. Brett offers to take a team out with her to check it out. Knox’s pride is greater than his greed and he refuses the offer. Ruby comments on how he is letting kids die and he agrees to let her go though the trial to become a hunter. Ruby asks him to shake on it, but he yanks her braid and uses his cigarette to burn the palm of her hand. Ruby and Vida are locked in a cage to wait for the trial. Vida tells her she is there to help.
Jude sneaks behind the cage to talk to Ruby and Vida. They tell him once their initiation starts, he needs to find where the coats are stored and get to the chatter. Ruby tells him to ask Cate where they can get medicine quickly. When the sun sets, Blues come and put sacks over the girls’ heads. They are led to an out building near the warehouse and the masks are removed to reveal a circle of fire with everyone in the camp watching from above. Knox explains he gets to do whatever he wants to the looser. Ruby and Vida are not allowed to use their abilities and will not be fighting each other. Knox has a Red brought in.
Ruby avoids the Red and Vida tries to attack him. They dodge his fire, but it isn’t long before he has Vida in a position to kill her. Ruby is so upset when Knox doesn’t do anything to stop it that she ends up taking over the Red’s mind. She sees his name, Mason, on blocks and his happy childhood. It cuts over to his being trained in the Red army and the torture of his mind being messed up by Clancy. He starts banging his head against the concrete. Ruby tells him to stop and plans to erase the painful memories. A bullet grazes Ruby’s ear and lands in Mason’s throat. Ruby takes control of Knox’s mind and has him come down to her. Vida trips him so he lands on his knees in front of Ruby. She has him apologize and admit what he has done to the kids. One kid tries to speak against Ruby, but she scares him into silence quickly. With no objections, she sends Knox away. Jude shows up with the chatter and confirms his operation was successful. Their group follows Ruby out.
The next day, they play Clancy’s radio message to prove Knox wasn’t the Slip Kid. Michael and a few of his loyal followers leave. Chubs cleans out Vida’s burn wound and helps the sick kids that have been moved into the warehouse. Ruby is planning on going with Olivia and the hunters to get the medical supplies they need. In the meantime, she does what she can to help the sick kids. Liam starts coughing and she goes to him. He tells her she is pretty and remembers Zu going off with someone else when they were in the Walmart. Ruby is sure she erased every trace of herself from his memory, but he tells her it is a place they don’t have to lie. Chubs and vida are behind them and he points out that they should’ve stayed together. Ruby doesn’t agree knowing how the League would’ve changed Liam into a cold killer. Ruby gets ready to leave with Olivia. Jude finds the lump in Cole’s coat and they decide to leave the flash-drive sewn in until they leave.
The group of hunters make the long trek on foot to get supplies. When they reach the small airport, Ruby is worried by the lack of people. She takes Brett and Jude with her to check around the building before they signal the others to join them. Jude tricks the mechanical lock into thinking the side door is closed and they enter the hanger slowly. They see crates that were dropped by other countries as aid. Ruby finds the medicine they need and loads up her bags. Suddenly, Michael is there and puts a knife to Ruby’s back. He grabs her gun and puts it to her chin. Jude finds them and tackles Michael enough to let Ruby get a few hits in. Michael throws her and Jude in different directions. Brett and Olivia come to check on the commotion. Two shots go off and the alarm sounds.
Ruby ends up being supported by Jude and Olivia while Michael’s group takes their supplies and weapons. They go outside when the PSFs arrive taking dazed Knox with them. Shots are fired and Ruby takes Jude to the ground to protect him. The Blues, led by Olivia and Brett, decide they will push the PSFs back. Jude has a plan to help out as well. Ruby pushes the button to open the door. Brett and Olivia’s teams give the initial push. He kisses her before they separate. Jude takes the electricity from the hangar and throws it at the PSF. The effort knocks him out and Brett has to carry him. Ruby runs after them but a female PSF grabs her wrist and takes her down. She scans Ruby and is terrified. Ruby bites her to take control. She get the woman off of her and runs as far as she can before collapsing. She props herself against a tree and rests.
When Ruby wakes up, it is daytime and she is being dragged by a man to a camp of adults who were displaced due to flooding. They are going to turn her in for the reward money. When the transporter arrives to take her, she sees it is Rob. He wears rubber gloves as he binds her more thoroughly and throws her in the back of his Jeep. Ruby continues to panic and tries in vain to free herself. She realizes she wasn’t able to get into people’s minds without touch previously because she wanted to keep herself from becoming a monster. She puts the image of the two dead kids into Rob’s head and makes him see them in the car with him. Ruby has the girl in the passenger seat and rob tries to shoot her. Ruby makes him thing the girl is pointing the gun at Rob’s chest.. Ruby pauses and the Jeep is hit from behind. The car crashes. Vida, Chubs, and Jude are there to rescue Ruby. Liam is in the front seat of Chub’s SUV asking if she is okay. Vida drives while Chubs Works on patching up Ruby. Jude holds her legs while Ruby passes out.
Sometime later, Ruby wakes up in a tent surrounded by the others. She sneaks out, grabs a wool blanket and starts heading down one of the park’s paths. She sits on a pier that overlooks a body of water fed by a waterfall. Everything hits her and she starts crying. She realizes she might need the League to keep her from becoming like the other Oranges she met. Liam finds her and he thinks he remembers her. He kisses her and she pulls back. She tells him she is with the Children’s League and he is furious. He storms back to the tent and Chubs tries to explain, but Ruby had to remove the memory of their escape from East River. Chubs convinces him to stay together until they get to the California state line.
Chubs fills Ruby in on how they found her through the Skip Tracer network. He tells her he won’t leave her behind, but can’t let Liam go off on his own again. They decide to take shifts overnight. Liam and Jude take the first shift and then Jude wakes up Ruby and Chubs. He shows her around the Oklahoma camp site a bit. When it is Vida’s turn to watch, Ruby doesn’t feel comfortable sleeping between Chubs and Liam. She sits by the fire with Vida and ends up telling her everything. Vida promises she won’t let Ruby become a monster like Clancy or Martin. She points out that Ruby’s worry of becoming like that will prevent it from happening. Ruby goes to sleep between Liam and Chubs.
Ruby wakes up and Liam is gone. She wakes up Chubs and they both know he doesn’t plan on coming back. Ruby finds a note in Chub’s shirt pocket that Liam went to the gas station. Ruby takes off running to find him. She finds him in the garage. She tells him he can’t go off alone and he says he needed to get away from her. She thinks he hates her, but he explains that he loves her. He has a memory of her in a green dress on Virginia Beach. he kisses her feverishly and she doesn’t realize she is in his head until it is too late. The memories of her are restored in his mind. He backs away from her and has to see Chubs healed from the gunshot wound. He takes off and Ruby calls after him. Two shots are fired and the front window shatters.
Seeing Liam is still breathing, Ruby uses a mirror to see the woman that shot at him. She raises her gun and goes after her. She fires two shots into the wall by the woman’s head, and the woman runs out. Ruby checks Liam and can’t find any blood, so she chases after the car the woman drives away. Liam joins her on the street and Ruby is relieved he is okay. She tries to explain that she altered his memories because she wasn’t strong enough to watch the League change him. He can’t understand why she would take his memories and not the feelings for her. He was terrified as to why he loved a stranger so completely. She doesn’t understand it either because her parents and Sam hadn’t acted like that. He is upset she didn’t give him the choice to stay with her. he also doesn’t understand why she feels the need to return to the League. He is furious her deal with them didn’t include her release from her agreement to stay. Chubs pulls up with Vida and Jude. Liam and Chubs go back into the gas station for supplies. Vida gets in the car with Ruby and sends Jude to help the boys. Vida shows Ruby the reply on the chatter telling them to ditch Liam and meet in Colorado. Ruby sends confirmation to meet and “later gator” to make sure it is really Cate. When the reply isn’t a reference to Cate’s codename, Sunflower, they start to worry if something happened to Cate and Cole. The boys return and Chubs starts driving. Ruby tells them they will split in Colorado and Chubs and Liam start to protest that they agreed on California. They keep their thoughts about Cate to themselves, and Ruby feels guilty about lying. They hear interviews on the radio about a summit between President Gray, the Children’s League, and the Federal Coalition. The groups are talking about meeting to start changing and rebuilding America. The League is suspicious, but the Coalition is hopeful to inflict change, especially in the PSFs and rehabilitation programs.
The drive from Oklahoma to Colorado is painstakingly boring and Vida takes over driving. As they get closer to Pueblo, Ruby realizes she is about to say goodbye to Liam forever and lets the tears flow. He grabs her and and holds it against his chest. They stop at a Dairy Queen and Ruby tells Jude to pack up supplies. Ruby and Vida enter the building through the back and work their way up front. Clancy is sitting in a booth reading and waiting. Ruby is able to keep him out of her mind as he tells them Cate figured out someone was intercepting the messages way before Ruby did. He has been keeping tabs on them for a while. When he threatens her, Vida shows herself and Ruby shoots him in the arm. Clancy takes control of Vida’s mind. Ruby doesn’t panic when Vida points the gun at her so Clancy has Vida point it at herself. Jude starts pounding on the locked back door. Clancy thinks it is Liam. Ruby is able to get into Clancy’s head when he attacks her mind. Liam and Chubs bust in through the window. Ruby gets the gun from Vida and points both guns at Clancy, whose interest has turned to torturing Liam. Ruby puts the gun to Clancy’s head to get him to stop, but Clancy threatens Cate and Cole’s lives.
Clancy tells them Nico was at Thurmond with him. He fed the League the intel to free Nico so he would have a spy there. Nico told him Rob’s people have taken over the League. They killed Alban and plan to explode kids in a camp during President Gray’s summit in six hours. Ruby realizes they need him. They end up on a private jet where the pilot thinks they are rich adults. Everyone falls asleep except Clancy, Ruby, and Jude. Clancy goes to the bathroom and Ruby tries to reassure Jude that everything will be okay. He think he could’ve helped if he was at HQ, but Ruby promises him it is better he is with them.
The group lands and an SUV is waiting for them. They take it to the Los Angeles River to search for the entrance into HQ that will lead them into the interrogation rooms. Vida finds the entrance and they start down a tunnel. Ruby makes she to keep Clancy in front of her. They go inside and Liam kisses Ruby before she goes to get the kids. She has Clancy in front of her and Jude behind her. They go to get the kids while Vida goes to the security room. Jude goes to the boys dorm while Ruby and Clancy go to the girls. The beds are all neatly made and the room is empty. They go across the hall to find Jude arguing with Nico, who tells them he told Clancy to keep them away until after it was safe. Cate and the others are supposed to rescue them at six in the morning. Ruby tries to get some answers from Clancy, but no one else can see him. She has no idea when she lost him.
Ruby asks Nico what other information Clancy asked him for. When Nico says retinal scanners, Ruby takes off for Alban’s office. Clancy is there reading a file. He makes Ruby see Chubs and Liam dead in a corner and she drops her gun in surprise. She quickly realizes it is an illusion because certain details are off. Clancy puts a file in the trash and sets it on fire. The two Oranges start to fight each other mentally until Jarvin shows up and takes them both down with white noise. When it stops, Cole is there and uses his ability as a Red to take out Jarvin. He gets Ruby into Alban’s office and tells her to stay there until he comes back. He tells her she can’t tell anyone, even Liam, he is a Red. Ruby has him put Clancy in the room with her before he takes off. She pushes the desk in front of the door and starts going through the half burned file in the trash. She learns Clancy’s mom was the Professor and had help from Alban to work on project Snowfall - the cure. She leaked her location so Clancy would find her with the hope she could stop him.
Ruby quickly realizes that her opportunity to control Clancy is running out. She carries him out to the hall and finds an empty gun closet to lock him in. Cate finds her and calls out her name. Ruby is surprised at how relieved she is to see Cate. She wants to tell her everything, but they don’t have time. She points out Clancy and they lock him in the closet. Cate explains it is all over and they won. Everyone is gathered in the atrium which is being used as a makeshift hospital while the infirmary is acting as the morgue. Cole comes up to celebrate their victory and asks about the flash drive. Ruby hands it over to Cate. She asks Cole how he is a PSI kid. He tells her that he didn’t get his abilities until he was twelve and did whatever he could to hide them. She wonders why he seems so normal compared to all the Reds she met at camp. He warns her not to tell Liam. Ruby goes over to her friends and Cole stands on a table to make a speech. He tells them the Children’s League is over, but they are moving to the Ranch (previous HQ) to reform and come up with a plan to free the kids in camps. Liam already knows that Ruby is staying with Cole and not coming with him and Chubs. He storms off in frustration when Ruby confirms it. A while later, Cole comes to get Ruby so they can check on Clancy. He already knows he is an Orange because Alban knew. Ruby now realizes Clancy’s mom was trying to get out from under her son’s influence. Liam returns and is surprised to hear this. Cole tells him to leave and go home because he is embarrassing him with his antics and whining. Jude catches their attention and they all look at the TV in time to see a kid shoot President Gray twice on his way into the summit with the Federal Coalition. Suddenly, the power goes out on everything. They hear something above them. Ruby and Vida cover Nico and Jude respectively just before fire starts raining down from the ceiling.
Ruby wakes up with Nico under her and something pinning her down. Liam is calling for her, but Cole shoves him out of them room and tells him to keep moving. Vida and Jude find Ruby and free her. They start making their way out of the room, not having time to help the trapped and injured. The two exits that Ruby knew about from drills are both not viable options, so they have to leave the way they came in. The bombs continue to go off as the survivors make their way down to the interrogation room. Cole makes his way through the tunnel so that he can lead at the front. Ruby tries to make her group go in before her, but Liam forces her forward first. They crawl through the cramped tunnel in places and keep going forward. Ruby worries the cement could give out at any second. Even feeling Liam behind her isn’t much of a comfort once all of HQ collapses and traps them inside. Ruby wonders about Cate and the flash-drive. Eventually, they see light and race towards it. Ruby is relieved to see kids climbing up the ladder to get out of the tunnel. Cole and the other agents start trying to figure out how to get everyone out of the city. As Ruby’s group starts to gather, she realizes Jude is missing. She dashes for the entrance to the tunnel and tries to go after him. Cole stops her. Liam takes Chubs with him to search the tunnel. Cole gives him an hour before they plan to leave without them.
When Liam and Chubs return hours later, Cole’s group is still trying to figure out how to get out of the city. Liam pulls Ruby aside and gives her Jude’s crushed compass he always wore. Ruby screams that she has to go back and get him, but Liam explains there is nothing left. When the building collapsed, it must have only taken Jude. A plane flies by and drops flyers announcing the survival of President Gray and how the attack from the Children’s League and Federal Coalition alliance prompted their targeted bombing of Los Angeles. Clancy comes out of another secret door saying he used the exit beneath the boy’s shower drain. Ruby is furious he survived but Jude didn’t. Cole starts debating whether they should kill him or use him as leverage to get out of the city. Clancy says his dad won’t do anything to save him; the president planned the attack on his own life to finally have a reason to attack the Children’s League. He goes on to tell them he came their to destroy the last bit of research his mom had done that found the cure for IAAN. She had planned to use the cure against Clancy first to keep him from stopping her. He found out and wiped out her brain. Ruby smiles as she pulls from her pocket and holds up the papers containing what research she was able to save from the fire.
