Fenestra 3
Amber Kizer
Meridian is with Tens and Rumi at the cemetery where Rumi’s parents are buried. They bought two plots: one for Auntie (though her burned body is technically still in the house in Colorado) and one for Juliet’s mom, Roshana (who’s body they still haven’t found). She is hoping that marking them will give them peace, which Auntie hasn’t seemed to find yet. They order plain headstones in the hopes that whoever upgraded Rumi’s parents’ stones might try again and have more information for them about other Fenestras.
Juliet is angry. She refers to a “she’ that is coming back and sends Tony out for ingredients to make sure he isn’t there when she does. Juliet, now alone at Rumi’s studio, starts searching though his belongings, looking for a leather portfolio. She grabs it, knowing that she is betraying her friends to protect them.
Rumi and Tony have a talk with Meridian, Tens, and Juliet. They want the kids to take lessons from their friends to increase their knowledge base. They both believe it will eventually help them in their quests to find others like them. Meridian and Tens agree; Juliet does not.
Nelli, the social worker who has been searching for the missing DG kids, comes over to tell them Faye is dying of cancer. She wants her to know about Fenestras in hopes that it will ease her through the living part of dying. Meridian is hesitant, but agrees to it. She goes to talk it over with Juliet, who seems very uneasy about it. Juliet asks if Meridian has ever been around terminally sick people. When Meridian says no, she starts to explain until Nelli walk in.
Gus brings Faye to the studio and she complains about how bright the girls are. They leave the room and the overwhelming light dims. They sit down to eat Juliet’s pies and explain the whole story. Back at home, Meridian and Tens hope that juliet will have a protector. They are attempting to practice telepathy through their own connection when they hear something at the door. there is a tail and broken spirit balls on the porch. Meridian wonders if it is the Aternocti. Custos takes off and Tens follows, telling Meridian to stay inside. A cat’s howl is cut off in the distance.
Juliet wakes up in the middle of the night from a nightmare and thinks she hears someone outside her door. She wants to ask her friends for help, but she thinks that will get them killed. She runs to Meridian and Tens’ house and Mini (her cat that has been frequently absent since she turned 16) joins her. While Tens patches her bare feet, Meridian tells Juliet about another Fenestra they may have found in history. Juliet asks where her Protector is, jealous that Meridian has Tens. Meridian starts to explain the rarity of a Protector, but Juliet doesn’t want to hear that she isn’t good enough and hides in the bathroom with Custos and Mini.
Nelli comes over to pick up Meridian and Tens after Juliet leaves with Tony. She tells them about her foster-child intern that might be good for Juliet. Her kind-of boyfriend, Bales (private investigator) found a body in a dairy farm that has been converted to a theater. Nelli takes them in case it is one of the kids from DG. Bales tells them all that is left is a skeleton, probably from around the 1970’s. Meridian is on a ladder to the catwalk above when she sees a light.
Meridian is surprised that everything seems blank in the room with the window She finds a boy about her age who is scared and has been blinded. He asks about his friends, Aileen and Uriah. Meridian asks if he knows Roshana. He says that she is one of the younger kids. She calls up her own window and asks Auntie for help convincing the boy to go through the window. Former DG residents appear and help him through. He remembers his name was Howie. When Meridian returns to the real world, she tells Bales and Nelli what she learned. Bales finds a match for the boy on his list and sneaks them out before the police arrive. Nelli has to return to work, so she drops Meridian and Tens off at home where Juliet is waiting to go to the chichi grocery store with them. Meridian is hoping the trip will strengthen their relationship. Juliet distracts herself in the grocery store to avoid any real conversation with Meridian, who is approached by a woman about her light. She agrees to talk over coffee. Meridian leaves Juliet with Tens and explain that it could help them learn about Roshana. Delia, the lady, tells her that she died while giving birth, but was brought back. In the brief time she was gone, she saw the same light she sees if she looks at Meridian indirectly. After that, she changed job positions from maternity nurse to hospice. Meridian urges her to go on.
Meridian and Tens try to sort out what they know about people that can see the light. Tony calls, upset because Juliet has disappeared again. They go to his house and try to explain that it will take time. he is not the one that messed her up, so he needs to get over feeling guilty. meridian points out it is his second chance.
Juliet goes to DG and into the creek where she feels at home. Ms. Asura’s voice comes from the bushes. She plays on Juliet’s insecurities and threatens her friends. She gives Juliet a symbol on a piece of paper to look for on a book and promises her answers about her mom in exchange for it. Ms. Asura also indicates that Kirian is still alive. Juliet returns home and Tony confronts her. He tells her that he is cutting back his volunteer work. he also gives her several options on what to do next. He sees that she is overwhelmed and decides to leave the discussion for the morning. She hides in her closet wondering what to do.
Meridian and Tens sit in the graveyard the day the headstones are delivered. A little while after, a sedan pulls up and a guy gets out to take pictures. They run up and start questioning him, but he gets back in the car and drives away. Meridian writes down everything they can remember about the car and the guy. A spirit comes to pass through her window and she sees Howie there. She is confused about him still being there. Tens pulls their van over to pick up a hitchhiker with a sign that says, “Will protect for food.” The girl introduces herself as Fara, Juliet’s Protector. Tens believes her, but Meridian is skeptical and won’t let her join them when they go to meet with their friends. They arrive at Rumi’s, but he is talking to people in uniforms, so they go to Tony’s instead.
Juliet is walking to Rumi’s to return his portfolio when police cars pass by and Tony calls to tell her to come home. She refuses until Tony says that Rumi is okay. She hides in an alley for the conversation, but runs home when she finds a headless cat with her kittens. Everyone arrives and discusses the possibilities of who would break into Rumi’s studio. She admits that she has a spirit ball under her bed and Meridian goes to get it. Juliet is worried that Meridian will say something about the stolen pieces under her bed, but she doesn’t. Tens tells everyone about Fara and they are as skeptical as Meridian. Juliet wants to meet her right away, but settles for going through her things she left in their van.
They don’t find anything unusual in Fara’s luggage, but everyone still argues over whether they should bring her over. Juliet finally speaks up and says she wants to meet her and then goes to her room. Fara was waiting outside and Tens brings her in. Meridian goes to get Juliet while the others question the new arrival. Juliet is crying and Meridian asks what is wrong. She thought everything would get better once her protector arrived. Meridian explains that she and Tens didn’t get along at first and he made it worse. Juliet goes out to meet Fara, who explains that she comes from a long line of protectors. Juliet trusts her. Tony threatens her. Everyone leaves, but Custos stays behind.
Meridian goes over to Nelli’s to sort through 40 years of children put into DG. Nelli feels like she needs to set it all right and thinks someone in her office must be involved. Meridian, knowing that Nelli and Bales love each other, suggests they tell him what is going on if he is going to continue helping them. Nelli’s boss calls to tell her she can pick up Howie’s ashes. meridian suggests they bury them in Auntie’s grave.
Juliet wakes up and looks out her window to see a man watching her. He runs and she opens her bedroom door to find Fara right outside. She tells her Protector what she saw and Fara runs after the man. She comes back empty handed. Juliet makes breakfast for everyone. When Tony leaves for the day, Juliet tells Fara not to lie about what she does and doesn’t understand. Fara explains that she was born as a Protector in Iran, where it is believed that only men can be Protectors. Her father believed she was and trained her anyway, but the secret police killed him for it. Fara ran away and made it from Iran to New York. When she came to Indiana, she could feel Tens.
Everyone gathers at the graveyard. Nelli brings her intern, Sergio, who looks a lot like Kirian, which puts Juliet on alert. They say some words and bury Howie’s ashes in a spirit stone. Gus calls and Nelli asks everyone to join her at Faye’s. When they arrive, Gus is upset that Faye won’t marry him. Meridian talks to him about how they met. She then goes to talk to Faye about her ideal wedding to Gus. Afterwards, Gus announces that he has a fast car for Faye (which is a dream of hers).
The next day, everyone goes to the racetrack in Indianapolis for a famous driver to take Faye around the track a few times. Meridian thinks she sees Ms. Asura and the Aternocti in a hot air balloon over them. THey all return to Faye’s for dinner, which was picked up from all her favorite restaurants. Afterwords, she explains that she is moving into hospice. As they are leaving, Meridian talks to Juliet and realizes she had to deal with this a lot at DG. Tony calls her away just as Meridian thinks she is about to open up. A man passes through her window and she sees Howie completely healed and ready to move on.
Nelli shows up to pick up Juliet and Fara to go through files, but informs them there is a change in plans because some remains fitting Aileen’s description were found. Juliet reluctantly agrees to go to the University where they are being kept. Dressed up as the “Future Doctors of America” club, they go into the lab. Juliet sees the girl at the window, but the girl can’t seem to hear her. Meridian appears and tells Juliet she will explain later. She helps the girl through the window and then explains that she thinks the body needs to be laid to rest for the people to actually cross completely. When they make it to Nelli’s Juliet can’t handle all of the memories about the others that lived at DG. She runs out and Fara follows her to the creek. Ms. Asura comes along to threaten Juliet and her friends. Tony comes looking for them. Ms. Asura leaves and Fara follows her after Tony arrives.
Meridian and Tens make their way home after finding the college kid who took pictures of the gravestones was a dead end. There is a note in their door to meet at the graveyard when it opens. Coyotes attack Custos and Mini. Tens and Meridian run to help. Tens eventually convinces Meridian to climb a tree. After the coyotes are all dead, Meridian finds Mini in the tree with her. They get her down and take her home, but she is in bad shape. THey know that somehow, the Aternocti are involved.
Juliet tries to sneak off in Tony’s car, but Fara finds her and drives her to DG. They start digging, trying to find out if bodies are buried around town because the cellar ran out of room. She helps a girl through her window and sees Roshana and Auntie. Her mom can’t speak loud enough for her to hear, so Auntie explains that she wants her to stop worrying about the past. When Juliet wakes up, Ms. Asura is there. She warns Juliet that she only has a few days left. Sergio comes along and threatens to call the police if she doesn’t leave the girls alone. She leaves saying she hurt Mini as a warning.
Rumi gets a vet to the cottage to help Mini. Juliet comes rushing in later with Fara and Sergio. He explains that he wanted to see DG and heard their voices. After he leaves, Fara tries to tell them what happened, but Juliet stops her. Tens points out that they need to go meet the Woodsmen. They get to the cemetery and shortly after an entourage arrives. A man in a wheelchair, obviously the leader, sends the rest of his group (except one) away so they can talk. He explains that his group (all named Timothy to prevent being identified) is meant to protect Fenestras’ families and keep their stories. They mark their graves so they identify them. He shows them an ancient spirit stone and Meridian comments about Rumi’s. He is interested. He tells her that she and Juliet are the only two for the light that they know of. Meridian asks about his injury and he explains that there was a car accident when he was helping a couple escape capture. The guy contacted them about Juliet. he explains that the Novelty (group of Aternocti) are about to strike. They agree to get everyone together for a meeting.
Fara prepares a feast and Juliet helps. Sergio comes to their door with flowers for Juliet. Fara gives him instructions on paper and invites him to a surprise party for Juliet. She then has Juliet sit down and write out all of her wrongs. When they are both finished, Fara drives them to DG. She explains that the celebration is for new beginnings. She takes Auntie’s journal and uses it to randomly answer secret questions. When it comes to Juliet, she uses Roshana’s sonnet book. Juliet is surprised to get an answer similar to what Auntie told her. Fara tells them to burn their wrongs in the fire and only speak them if they affect the group. Juliet finally pours her heart out.
Everyone is surprised by Juliet’s declaration, especially at how much they had failed her to let Ms. Asura take control. They decide that they can use this to their advantage. Juliet agrees to seeing Ms. Asura again to get more information. Nelli has Gus announce that Faye changed her mind about getting married. They hope a wedding will keep the Aternocti from suspecting they know about the attack.
Everyone bustles around to surprise Gaye with the wedding she described to Meridian. During the process, Meridian helps a man pass not just through the window, but directly to the light. She notes that they should study other religions. Afterwards, Meridian and Tens spend some time together. They talk about getting married in the future.
Back home, Juliet reads her mom’s notes in the sonnet book. Fara comes to talk to her, and realizes that Juliet is jealous of Meridian and Tens being in love. Fara admits that she is too Fara explains that they are a different kind of soul mates and won’t necessarily fall in love like them. Fara leaves Juliet alone to read. She goes by the window to find a post card from Ms. Asura saying she will suffer. Juliet checks for Rumi’s portfolio but it is gone.
Meridian and Tens arrive home to find a newspaper on their door. The headline is about a race car driver not being able to drive in the race. They are both baffled by this. Rumi calls and tells them the Woodsman want to meet. They drive over and find several Timothys looking around the shop. The lead Timothy (in the wheel chair) explains that the Speedway for the race was built on sacred ground. He believes the Aternocti plan to do a ceremony there to elect their new elder which usually kills a lot of innocents. he wants Meridian to see if she can speak to one of his spies that was killed there. They watch another accident on the news and she agrees.
Nelli calls Tens to let them know Bales found the rat among them. They head over there next. Bales tells them that he followed Sergio when he left the bonfire and saw him meet up with Nelli’s boss and a woman fitting Ms. Asura’s description. He has pictures of Sergio handing her notes about them and a page from Auntie’s journal. Bales thinks he was coerced by her, threatening someone he loves. They decide to tell Juliet after they meet with the Woodsmen. On the way, they arrive and start wandering around the track. Eventually, they make their way to the infield. Meridian has several souls to help and Tens sees Timothy talking to Sergio. There is a Woodsman among the group she helps. He gives her a cryptic message about finding the artesian, but she can’t get clarification before he crosses. There is a crash. Tens finds her and there is an announcement about a storm coming in. Tony calls to tell them Faye is fading.
Sergio arrives at Tony’s to see Juliet. He gives her tickets to the race and asks her to go with him. she tries to get him to leave, but Fara lets him come along to DG. Ms. Asura shows up shortly after. Juliet offers her mother’s book in exchange for Rumi’s portfolio. Ms. Asura has no interest and tells her to check the creek before leaving. They find the pages of Rumi’s drawings and notes in the creek. THey try to save what they can. Fara drops Sergio off before taking Juliet to Rumi’s to explain what happened.
Everyone meets in Faye’s room and they talk about what happened at the race. Bales comes later to let Meridian and Tens know that more remains are being found. The Authorities are calling it a serial killer and the FBI might get involved. A harpist comes along and plays a song Rumi knows. Juliet says she knows the song, but with different words. She starts singing, but has to leave the room. Meridian goes to the window to let Faye through, but though she is ready, her daughter, Dolores, is not. Dolores comes in and Faye goes from non-responsive to comforting her daughter.
Juliet can’t sleep and joins her friends in the living area of the apartment. Nelli explains Sergio’s betrayal and Juliet is shocked. They speculate that the Aternocti may have offered him his brother for his help. Rumi calls to discuss the fake book (the Woodsman found the actual) being made. Juliet insists that she and Fara will deliver it to Ms. Asura. No one will let on that they know anything about people helping the Aternocti. Meridian and Tens will keep an eye on the speedway. Fara finds a picture of Juliet’s parents in her room. It looks like her father, Argy, might have been a Fenestra. They need to show Meridian and Tens right away.
Meridian and Tens focus on the race and how the Aternocti plan to use their driver to kill a lot of people. Tens answers his phone to Bales saying the police are going to show up at the school he is at. They hear him being beaten and a woman’s cries to leave him alone. They also hear Ms. Asura. When they arrive at the abandoned, run down school, they decide to start in the basement and work their way up. A soul comes to Meridian when she enters. Kirian helps the boy through the window. Auntie tells her that the children are still injured on her side because they feel guilty rather than loved. Rumi’s words he says over graves can heal them. Custos arrives and leads them to Bales under a pile of rubble and a hole in the ceiling. They dig him out and when he wakes up, he tells them Ms. Asura and others were there waiting for them. Tony was the only person they told where they were going. They decide to call Timothy for help from the Woodsmen.
Timothy points out that words and love are the greatest power. Fara’s father taught her how to kill an Aternocti with a chant and thoughts of those she loves. She teaches them the words in English. They leave the Woodsmen and go to the museum that is claimed by the Aternocti. They all go in together, but Ms. Asura and her followers don’t seem worried. They start chanting and the room fills with light. Ms. Asura warns them that there are others who have already succeeded in their plans before she dies. Juliet confirms that she died.
Juliet is relieved that Ms. Asura is finally gone. Woodsmen come along and take them to Nelli. Bales is relieved to see her safe and then collapses. Juliet lets him go through her window. He tells her that her father is alive and to ask Gus about camping in the Shades. She sees Kirian on the other side with her mom, smiling. Juliet wakes up at the hospice where Faye has been staying. Before they send Gus home for some rest, she asks him about camping. He explains that there is a park named the Shades of Death. They all start to piece together clues they have received and think that is where Roshana is hidden. Fara points out the news talking about a parade the day before the big race.
Everyone meets back at the cottage to determine what to do with what they know. Rumi saved his uncle’s diary and points out how dark the entries are (probably Aternocti). Tony talks to the Woodsmen. They think the parade will be a smaller event for the Aternocti; small enough that the race won’t be cancelled. Meridian tells Juliet to go look for her mother because she knows that will block her concentration if she doesn’t at least try.
Tony, Fara, and Mini go with Juliet to the park to look for her mother’s remains. They use what clues they have to lead the way. Fara points out the someone is following them and it turns out to be two people that appear to be rangers. Juliet tells Fara about Ms. Asura controlling the poison ivy at DG. Fara explains that Fenestras are also able to tap into energy of anything made by the creator. Juliet tires, but doesn’t have any luck. She asks her deceased loved ones for help and a firefly appears. She decides they will follow it.
Timothy has called in Woodsmen from all over the country to help with the Aternocti at the parade and race. They give Tens and Meridian hats (marked with an F to let the new comers know who they are) and walkie talkies. As the parade starts, Meridian points out that the clowns handing out toys and candy are Aternocti. She thinks she sees Sergio on a balcony and notices that he drops a balloon off of it that droops, rather than floating away. She notices another person do the same. They call it in to the Woodsmen, but they don’t have enough to report to the police without knowing what is inside them. Meridian gets an idea.
Juliet follows the firefly until she trips and looses it. A storm rolls in. Fara thinks they are still being followed. A native American approaches Juliet to use her window. Auntie is there and tells her to call on the light like she did with the firefly. Juliet asks the lightning to light the way. It moves closer and strikes a tree in the ravine below, visible from a glow behind it.
Meridian runs three blocks with Tens following. He breaks down the door of a building and they rush upstairs to find the Indianapolis Weather Service. Tens breaks that door too. There is a young intern working that is surprised by them and the guns they point at him. Meridian finds the code for the tornado siren and uses the phone to set them off. They tie the guy up and leave, hoping it is enough to get people away from the Aternocti.
One of the Timothys comes to pick up Meridian and Tens and explains that they will have a cover for them. He takes them to a safe house. Tens tries to get a hold of Tony while another Timothy takes Meridian to a ghost so she can bring up her window and talk to Auntie. The firefighter’s soul passes through her window, but Auntie isn’t there. The Woodsmen explain that there will be drunken parties all around the speedway until the race starts. They offer to watch over the situation while Meridian and Tens go to Rumi’s. As they pass Juliet and Tony’s apartment, they see Sergio messing with one of the town statues. He is scared off when a car honks at them to keep moving. They inspect the statue and find cameras in the eyes. Tens rips out the wires before they go to Rumi’s. When they arrive, the find him pouring over his uncle’s journal. He is trying to figure out which artesian well he spent a lot of time at. Tens tells him about the statues around town.
Juliet finds her mother’s remains in the tree. Tony suggests they alert the police and she agrees. A couple, one Aternocti, appear, trying to act like lost college students. Fara sees right through their act. The man pulls out a gun and says he wants to make it look like a tree fell on them. Juliet readies herself, Fara attacks, and the fun is fired.
Meridian and Tens leave Rumi to go to the race. The speedway is overly crowded, but they know they aren’t the only ones on the lookout for Aternocti; there are Woodsmen all over the Event. They keep their eyes peeled for any suspicious behavior, especially involving balloons. They start making out, pretending that is their cover, when a should approaches with a black cat.
Before Juliet can really start creating the light to destroy the Aternocti, the guy is gone. Fara knock the girl out and notices a man behind them. Juliet runs around to see her dad, Argy.
Meridian and Tens wander helplessly looking for clues. Polly Bennett, the last member of the Bennett family to live on that land, appears at Meridian’s window. Before crossing over, she tells the young Fenestra to follow the stream to find the Aternocti at the well because the water has power. Rumi calls shortly after and Meridian puts him to work to try to find an artesian well on the speedway grounds. Tens sees a photographer being replaced by another one with the Aternocti symbol tattooed on him. When the drivers come out, they know exactly who to look at to confirm the Aternocti have a driver in the race.
Argy goes through introductions. he tells Juliet that he didn’t know about her until a few months ago, when DG was on the news. Juliet embraces him.
Tens and Meridian start making their way to the lake. Meridian thinks she see Sergio and starts pulling Tens in that direction. Suddenly, people start running and screaming because the Aternocti have dropped a crate of poisonous snakes in the section called the “Snake Pit.”
Argy tells Juliet to go for help. he tells her how he calls upon energy and has her ask for protection for Tony and her mom’s body. Animals surround them.
Tens grabs Meridian and they start making their way to the lake again. She finds herself at the window to help the victims.
Argy, Fara, and Juliet arrive at the Speedway. After getting some food, Juliet leads Fara to their seats near the finish line while Argy goes to dispense of some Aternocti he sees selling T-shirts.
Tens boosts Meridian over a fence to get her closer to the lake and hot air balloons. She runs from security and up a tree to think. She realizes the snakes were how the Aternocti planned to get people closer together. Meridian watches their driver, Smith, create accidents, and then get waved to the center of the pack. She needs to find the well to stop him and the race.
Juliet knows Meridian is in trouble when she sees the snakes released. She sends one of the Woodsmen to create a distraction so that she and Fara can climb to the roof for a better view. When they reach the top, Juliet notices a huge, pink bunny balloon moving.
Meridian calls out for Tens telepathically and it finally works. He is tracking Sergio while Meridian goes to get the giant bunny balloon into the race track. Woodsmen come along to help her free it. She asks Auntie for help, but it looks like it will get stuck in the trees before it can reach the track.
Fara point out Meridian by the inflated bunny. Juliet hopes that she wants the bunny on the track and asks the trees to bend out of the way. They do. The float makes it onto the track between the pack and Smith.
Tens tells Meridian where he is and where to hide. Reunited, they see a man that looks like Rumi, but much older. They hear his frustration at everything going wrong. His successor hasn’t arrived yet. Meridian calls up her window to talk to Auntie.
Juliet watches the commotion around Smith, but knows it isn’t over yet. She sees people heading towards the lake and wonders where her father is.
Auntie tells Meridian that she, like Juliet, can harness energy. She also says that Meridian is more than just a Fenestra because she can also help the living with her light. Auntie says her final goodbye and moves on to join Charles. Sergio is heading for them.
Juliet thinks of the people and the good in her life and calls on the light. A geyser shoots into the sky from the lake.
Sergio tells Tens and Meridian to save themselves. Timothy rides in on a golf cart driven by Argy, who immediately starts going after Aternocti. Meridian calls on the water and pressure from the artesian well to flood everything and destroy the Aternocti’s technology driven disaster.
With the rack flooding and the power outage, the race is finally cancelled. Fara and Juliet take a cab to the hospice. Deliah lets them get cleaned up before they go to Faye’s room. Meridian and Tens are already there and they swap stories. Faye goes to Juliet’s window to say goodbye. She sees her mom healed on the other side.
Tens and Meridian can see each other’s lives now through their connections. They fornicate.
Everyone meets at the cemetery on Memorial day to celebrate the lives of their loved ones.
