Becca Fitzpatrick
Scott and Dante head to a meeting of the Nephilum so that the higher ups can meet their new leader: Nora. The previous night, she swore a blood oath to her biological father--The Black Hand--to lead them in the war against the fallen angels. Scott has sworn to protect Nora. When they arrive an old woman is questioning Nora about her intensions and her boyfriend, Patch, the fallen angel. The old woman, Lisa Martin, wants to brand Nora with the mark of the Black Hand to prove she is going to lead them. Scott suggests that they brand a fallen angel instead. They agree and scott brands Baruch. Scott does his best to comfort Nora. She wants to celebrate the fact that Hank, The Black Hand, is dead.
Vee convinces Nora to go out to a club. While they are dancing, Vee points out a guy staring at Nora: Dante. She makes an excuse about getting drinks and slips off to talk to him, unwillingly. He tells Nora that she needs to improve her reputation with the Nephilum by “dating” on of them. He suggests Scott, but Nora quickly refuses, so Dante suggests himself. Vee finds them out back together and Nora tells her that her and Dante--Scott’s friend--met this morning and he wanted to show off his new car. Vee, having a crush on Scott and wanting to be nice to his friend invites Dante to join them. To Nora’s horror, he accepts. Sometime later, Nora has a headache. Dante offers to take Vee home when she is done dancing. Nora goes out to her car she inherited from Scott, but it won’t start so she gets out and opens the hood. A blonde, cherub faced man confronts her looking for Patch. Nora knows he isn’t human because she couldn’t sense his approach. She tells him she doesn’t have a boyfriend and starts walking back into the club. THe man shouts that he will burn down Delphic Amusement Park, which Patch lives under. Nora picks up her pace.
Nora goes home and after a quick conversation with her mom about the cherub faced man that came to the door looking for her, she goes to her room. Shortly after, Nora opens her window and gets into bed. Patch joins her.. She tells him about Dante’s plan for them to pretend they are dating. Patch isn’t happy about it, but Nora says it is only until after Cheshvan, which the Black Hand had predicted would be worse this year. Nora asks Patch about the blonde cherub faced man that was looking for him. He explains that Pepper Friberg is an archangel that has been misbehaving on Earth. Patch knew this and promised not to rat him out in exchange for the Book of Enoch. Since pepper never delivered, he thinks Patch is the one exposing his secrets. The next day, Vee calls Nora to go running “coincidently” by Scott’s house because Vee is hoping to “run” into him. They do and Dante is with him. Nora keeps running and Dante follows, talking about how he wants to train her so that she can take care of herself against the fallen angels now that she is Nephilum. Nora wonders how to stope the war as she promised the archangels while keeping her blood oath to lead the Nephilum.
While leaving a sports store with new running shoes, Nora is kidnapped from the parking lot. She dropped her phone and screamed and later wonders if Patch knows she was taken since he was on the line. After a long ride in a van with a bag over her head, Nora is taken into a cabin by three Nephilum. They don’t trust her and want to make a point of it by chaining her up and threatening her. Nora gets so angry that she breaks the chains and hits all three, sending them flying. they leave saying she needs to get her priorities straight.
Patch shows up at the cabin, admitting he found Nora because he put a tracking chip in her pocket and a bug on her phone. They decide they’ll have to have a public fight. Nora makes it home, but is late for dinner. She tells her mom that she and Patch broke up. Dante wakes her up in the middle of the night and has Nora try to catch him as they run through the woods.
Nora goes to the club with Vee for her publicly staged fight with Patch. before she finds him, Vee sees Marcie flirting with Scott and sends Nora to break it up. Marcie drags Nora out back and asks if her tired and crampy symptoms have anything to do with both of her parents being Nephilum. Nora dodges the truth--Marcie doesn’t have much longer to live--just for Marcie to tell Nora that she is moving into their farmhouse.
Marcie goes back into the club, ignoring Nora’s protests. The band starts up and Nora heads to the bar for her fake fight with Patch. He “drunkenly” hits on her and tells the bartender that they used to date when she was human. Nora refuses his advances and says she is dating Dante. Patch gets handsy and is thrown out. Nora spots on e of the Nephil that kidnapped her. She sneaks out to alert Patch telepathically. He tells her to send him out, but she isn’t able to. She tries to sneak back into range with Patch, but instead finds Dabria and Pepper talking. She goes back inside and shortly after fallen angels show up and attack the Nephilum. Vee leads Nora away, almost protecting her. Nora wants war so that she’ll never have her body taken over.
Vee takes Nora home and starts asking questions. Nora tells her that she and Patch broke up and makes up a story about Patch telling her the kidnapper was dangerous. Vee doesn’t believe the second part and tells Nora that she has a secret of her own. Nora goes to her room and tries to call Patch twice with no luck. She goes to bed feeling anxious because Cheshvan starts the next night. Dante wakes her up for training. After a few drills, he tells her to uproot a tree. she tries for a couple of hours without success. Dante explains that he knew she wouldn’t be able to do it yet and this was her benchmark for future reference. Nora gets extremely mad, especially since she still has to go to school and take exams. He gives her some drink that she originally thinks is Gatorade, but makes her choke and feel horrible. Dante says it’s for her own good before leaving her to make her way back.
NOra gets ready to go to school. In her first class, she receives a text message from Patch telling her to meet him at the docks. She makes an excuse to leave class and goes. Pepper is there, explaining that Patch got away from him the previous night but left behind his cell phone. With gun in hand, he tells Nora that they are going on a trip.
Pepper explains his plan to kidnap Nora to get Patch’s attention so that the archangel can ask the fallen angel for a favor. He tells Nora to get into a small motor boat and tie herself up with enchanted ropes. She starts the process as Pepper starts to get into the boat. Nora sees Pepper is only half in and then knocks the boat to make him fall, forgetting that archangels can fly. Nora dives overboard and is able to swim and then run away to her car. She drives to a parking lot without cars and hides there. Scott calls to ask Nora about lunch and she asks for Dante’s number. She calls him to find out about the blue drink that heightened her powers. he tells her to meet him at the rollerskating rink (where it is easy to spot spies) and tells her the drink has devil craft so the Nephilum can end the fallen angel race. Nora has to choose a side: Nephilum or Patch.
Patch is waiting in Nora’s car when she leaves the rink. Patch takes her to his swanky new apartment (because pepper found and trashed the last one). Nora tells him about Dante’s plan and as her Nephil trainer had predicted, Patch is extremely angry, especially since Nora ingested some. Nora points out that Patch is doing everything on his own when they are supposed to be a team. He tells her that she has to choose a side before leaving her to take a call, completely dismissing her. Nora hangs around his apartment a while debating her options.
Dante wakes Nora for training. She explains that she will continue to train with him as long as he doesn’t give her anymore devil craft. He tells her that no fallen angels have taken over Nephilum bodies since the start of Cheshvan. After some running (Nora has been improving) Dante teaches her about mind tricks. She pictures bombs in his head and he feels nothing for a period of time. Nora is dismissed after that, but comes home to find Marcie moving in. Nora calls her out on being able to use mind-speak, but Marcie says she’s not tricking Nora’s mom.
Marcie attempts to be nice by giving Nora an excused absence slip, but Nora wants to know what the catch is. She tries to see if Marcie knows Blakely and it turns out his younger brother plays for their high school football team, which plays at home on Friday. Nora tells Marcie that she is going to ask about their father’s killer and Marcie wants to be there. NOra meets Patch at his place and they exchange progress reports. Patch didn’t make any trying to find Pepper’s blackmailer and quickly shuts down Nora’s suggestion that it is Dabria. They make plans to utilize the information they got from Marcie and Nora drives home. She gets pulled over for a nonfunctioning taillight by Detective Basso, and she gets a feeling from him that he’s not human.
Nora meets Marcie at the football game and they start looking around for Blakely. Marcie confesses her plain to question him first and Nora threatens her not to ruin their plan. Marcie spots Blakely and starts running after him. Nora follows, but by the time she catches up, Blakely has possessed Marcie’s body He uses it to threaten Nora’s life when Patch shows up. He stabs Nora with a devil craft knife before leaving her on the ground in pain.
Nora wakes up at Patch’s and has already mostly healed from her wound. Patch explains that Blakely will come to them because he had to leave the dagger behind. Nora goes home and Marcie wants to talk, however she leaves quickly after Nora scolds her for ruining their plan.
Dante wakes up Nora for training and shows her the Nephil that had kidnapped her, now harley recognizable from the beating Dante gave him. he sends him away and allows Dante to start their training session. Afterwards, they hear some noises and climb into the trees. Six fallen angels walk by looking for them. NOra recognizes on of them from the Devil’s Handbag when he attacked a girl that looked like her. After waking up from a post-training nap, she explains to Marcie about Saturday chores. Marcie calls Scott to do her work for her and gets mad when Scott and Nora have fun raking leaves together.
Marcie suggests a Halloween party at the farmhouse. Nora’s mom agrees. After roping Scott into being her date, Marcie and Nora’s mom go out for decorations. Nora goes to see Patch and Blakely calls. He says in exchange for the knife, he will give them the antidote to the poison Nora was infected with when he stabbed her.
Nora wakes up in the middle of the night for food, but nothing is appealing Dante wakes her up for training and she doesn’t feel well. He convinces her to train anyway and afterwards, on her way home, she finds Dante’s bag. She opens it out of curiosity and finds fifteen bottles of devil craft. She takes one because she feels she needs it so badly, and says it will just be this one last time.
Nora wakes up four hours later after drinking the devil craft. Vee comes over and Nora updates her on the latest Marcie drama. Patch texts Nora that he has the antidote, so she makes an excuse to tell Vee and goes to her boyfriend’s townhouse. She is upset with him for treating her like a damsel in distress rather than a partner. She tells him that she is leading the Nephilum to war against the fallen angels. He questions if she is as ready as she thinks. Patch gives Nora the antidote and explains that if she doesn’t take it, she will develop an uncontrollable addiction to devil craft, however it won’t work if she has had devil craft in the last 24 hours. She mind-tricks Patch into thinking she took it and decides that she’s not willing to give up the extra strength before heading to war.
Nora gets Dante’s address from Scott and goes to get devil craft from him. He gladly gives her a few bottles, especially after she tells him that she is ready to lead the army to war. The whole time, she is trying to fight off her new addiction. When she leaves, Patch calls. He has been following her via the tracking device and is upset that she was at Dante’s. He asks if she wants to talk, obviously knowing more than he is letting on.
The night of Marcie’s Halloween party, Patch and Nora still haven’t made up. He shows up in a mask and they sneak off to the bathroom for some privacy. Nora’s mom catches them kissing and kicks Patch out of the house. Marcie sends Nora’s mom to the store for more snacks and starts up a game to randomly pair people for blind dates. Nora gets Baruch and the party is taken over her blind date and his group of fallen angels. Nora can’t keep her mind blocks in place and he tells her to swear fealty to him.
Nora is able to get into Baruch’s mind and make him feel like a hot poker was used to burn his wing scars. She escapes his grasp and Dabria shows up. She says that Patch sent her, but NOra can’t trust her because she is sure Dabria is hiding something.
Patch is inside when Nora goes in and explains that he did send Dabria to get NOra out of there. Marcie comes up with a story about Party crashers and Patch gets rid of Baurch. Vee comes over with Scott and wonders what happened. They go with Marcie’s story. Vee agrees to leave after Nora volunteers Marcie to help with cleanup. Nora feels bad that she will have to erase part of Marcie’s memory so she won’t remember Patch being there.
Dante wakes up Nora for training and explains that they have come up with a way to possess fallen angels using devil craft. He has her practice with a fallen angel girl that he brought with him (explaining how the facility where they are kept is top secret). Afterwards, Nora wants to know how possession is possible, but Dante doesn’t have an answer. She explains her theory about Dabria being the fallen angel that is black mailing Pepper. Dante says that the spies they’ve had on Patch have seen quite a bit of Dabria lately. Dante agrees to send along his photographic evidence.
Marcie gets Nora ungrounded and they go shopping after school. On the way home, they stop at Dante’s house so Nora can get the photos. He doesn’t answer and an old Lady tells them that he was renting and move out two nights ago. They go home where the photos are waiting for Nora. She opens the envelope in her room and sees Dabria kissing Patch.
Nora goes over to Patch’s with the pictures, but only Dabria is there. Nora demands an explanation and Dabria tells her how the Nephilum are after her and tried to get her while she was trying to find Blakely. She gave a discharged security guard a false prophecy and tried to follow hi when he attempted to beg for his job back. Patch rescued her and she kissed him but he ended it immediately.
Patch comes home and demands Dabria to go back to her safe-house and say there. After a few protests, she leaves. Patch apologizes for not telling Nora what happened. They come up with an idea that Pepper is making up the black mailer to get to Patch and chain him in hell for a group of rouge archangels. Nora takes Scott to the Devil’s Handbag and they get into a high stakes game in the basement by bribing the bartender. Pepper is there. He takes them to the alley to talk. Pepper knows who the blackmailer is but cannot tell them because of an oath. They want him to enchant weapons with the power of heaven (which will only work if used for good) to keep his secret. He is supposed to get a call from them fro a meeting location in twenty minutes. Nora explains that she and Scott will go in his place.
Nora calls Pat to let him know what is going on. Pepper receives the call and is told to meet in the cemetery’s only mausoleum. The plan is to have Scott in a hoodie impersonating Pepper. Nora is still convinced Dabria is behind everything.
Nora and Scott park and get out of the car by the cemetery. Scott goes to the mausoleum and Nora calls Patch, who doesn’t answer. Nora creeps up to a stone wall to get into position and starts worrying about Scott. She is approached by a dog, which goes away and them comes back with someone that attacks her from behind, strangling her with Scott’s whip. She mind tricks the dog into biting him and then knows who attacked her.
Nora is able to defeat Dante and tie him up with the whip before she starts asking questions. Patch and Scott are tied up with devil craft. Dante is working for the fallen angels because he doesn’t think the Nephilum have a chance, especially since the archangels are backing the fallen angels. He lied about the oath he said he swore to Hank and plans to take over the Nephilum army, leading them to their death. Dante frees himself from the whip because the enchantment doesn’t affect him. nora uses the dog again to get away.
Nora and Patch start working on plans to defeat Dante. Patch comes up with an idea that Pepper can help them out with. They meet with him and Patch agrees to kill Dante with Pepper’s enchanted dagger (will cut off his tongue if he tries to tell anyone about Pepper’s involvement). In return, Patch and Nora want all of the feathers of the fallen angels which are stored in heaven. With no alternative, Pepper agrees.
Scott calls and says that Dante has called a meeting to make an announcement. Patch and Nora assume this is to accuse her of being a traitor. Patch, knowing they won’t have the feathers in time, convinces Nora that her best option is the challenge Dante to a duel which he will make sure goes in her favor. She admits her devil craft addiction.
Nora’s meeting request is accepted and set for that night at Hank Millar’s house. Patch has already worked out a plan with Scott: he will possess Scott to be at the meeting. Nora goes alone to meet some of the higher ups and explains that she wants the Nephilum unified. She challenges Dante, who tries to make excuses not to duel. Everyone agrees that it is a good idea. patch is able to get them to agree to have the duel in two days. Nora leaves.
Knowing she probably doesn’t have much time left, Nora goes to Vee’s house and sneaks in the window. She tells her best friend the entire truth. Vee doesn’t seem surprised by any of it and she starts hinting at her own secrets. Nora realizes that Vee is one of the Nephilum.
Patch spends an entire day training Nora how to use a sword--Dante’s weapon of choice. Back at patch’s place after a shower, Nora sees a shadow moving. When the bathroom door knob starts to turn, she uses the door to take down the intruder. Blakely begs her not to hurt him.
Blakely explains that he thinks Dante is working for the fallen angels. Dante has been having him create weapons to use against Nephilum, but refused to let him make anything to fight the fallen angels. There is a sword that can kill Nora. She agrees to meet him with Patch. When they get there, Blakely is dying. He tells Nora that the sword can also kill Dante, but he doesn’t know it yet. Nora tries to get the location of the factory, but Blakely doesn’t reveal a clear answer. He tells them that Dante knows about the feathers before they have to leave because one of the higher-ups, Lisa, is on her way in. They decide that they have to find a way to warn Pepper.
pepper calls to let them know that he has the feathers but is freaking out. Patch sends him to his studio at Delphic Park and tells him to wait there with the feathers. Pepper insists that Patch hunt down Dante and brings him to Pepper before he will give Patch the knife he needs to kill him. Patch and Nora say their goodbyes so they can split up - Nora to Pepper (with Scott) and patch to find Dante.
Scott picks up Nora and she explains the situation. He takes her below the amusement park and to Patch’s studio. They break down the door when there is no answer. Nora smells something burning and finds smoke when she reaches the secret door. She crawls through to find the fire and burning feathers.
Scott and Nora try to put the fire out and find patch’s feather, but they all look the same. Marcie was manipulated by Dante to believe that she should have been Hank’s heir. He also told her that Nora killed Hank, which he must have learned from Pepper. Nora frantically searches for Patch’s feather, but Scott has to get her out empty handed. They find Patch’s motorcycle, which has been wrecked. Nora wants to go back to the studio to wait for Patch as they had agreed.
Nora dreams of being with Patch in his bead, ignoring Vee, who is trying to wake her up. Patch becomes Dante and Vee finally gets her up with a pitcher of water. She won’t let Nora give up and they go to the duel. Dante is late and while waiting for him hundreds of fallen angels start approaching. Nora thinks the gates of hell have been opened, and she needs to get Patch out and close them. She explains that the fallen angels will probably have the power to possess the Nephilum indefinitely and tries to send Vee away with Scott. However Vee says they are all in the fight together and Nora accepts.
They split up so that Nora can get Dante alone. She defeats Rixon after he tells her that Dante freed the fallen angels that swore loyalty to him. She takes his sword and finds Dante. He says he ascended past Nephilum and fallen angels and left Patch to rot in hell. Nora fights him, but Scott intervenes. She tries to get behind Dante while he is distracted, but he ends up stabbing Scott in the chest. Nora is enraged and mind tricks Dante into dropping his sward. She has it, but he recovers and kicks it from her hand. Dante tackles Nora and starts strangling her. He grabs the sword and has it ready to lodge in her chest. She sees a stone angel and has the strength to possess Dante. She stabs his body in the chest.
Nora mourns over Scott’s body, wondering how Vee will get through it. Detective Basso admits that he is an archangel sent to put an end to devil craft. He is ignoring Pepper’s admission that Nora sent him after the feathers and tells her to cut along her scar when it is time. Patch stumbles up, explaining that the fallen angels that swore loyalty and ingested devil craft were sent back to hell. He possessed Rixon to get out. He gives her a ring and they make a blood oath to love each other. She cuts her wrist where detective Basso told her to and Patch suddenly can feel things.
Some time later, Nora is helping Vee finish getting ready for her wedding, surprised that Vee did something more traditional than her. Nora tells her best friend that she could come home, but Vee can’t stand being reminded of Scott. She makes a joke about loving the British and her husband, Gavin, who will age and die while Vee will only age After the ceremony, Nora finds Patch and they escape to a hotel room.
