Infernal Devices 3
by Cassandra Clare
York 1847: Adele Starkweather prepares to get her first mark, but the mark ends up burning her.
London 1873: Jem arrives at the London Institute and Charlotte introduces him to Will. At first, Will is his usual cruel self until he learns that Jem is dying. Then he agrees to train with him
Tessa tries on her wedding dress with Charlotte’s help. Cecily tries to convince Will to write home while he tries to get her to go home. Gideon wants to be friends with Sophie, who says she cannot because of their positions. Gabriel Lightwood comes to the institute to tell his brother, Gideon, that their father (who has demon pox) has transformed into a worm demon that has eaten the servants. A letter is written from Inquisitor Victor Whitelaw to Consul Josiah Wayland asking for approval of appointing Charlotte as Josiah’s successor as the Cousul.
The Lightwood boys, Will, Jem, Henry, Cecily, and Tess head to were Benedict Lightwood had insisted on staying. It brings back memories of Tessa’s previous encounter there with Will. The Lightwood’s sister, Tatiana, had come for a visit and her husband was eaten. Will, Jem, Tessa, and Cecily find her while hunting the worm. They find Benedict in the garden and send Tessa to take Tatiana to her carriage. Tessa hears a noise inside the house and goes in. She finds Henry being attacked and saves him. The Lightwood boys come along to help fight the worm. Cecily climbs a tree and jumps on its back, causing the worm to bite itself when she gets out of the way. Will worries about his sister, but Gabriel is impressed. Jem collapses.
Henry takes documents from Benedict’s study to research any involvement with Mortmain. Will and Tessa get Jem back to the Institute where the Silent Brothers will help heal him. They wait and talk about books. Jem asks to see Will when he is well enough. Tessa goes to talk to Cecily, who has been feeling abandoned. She explains that Will’s ways are a force of habit and tells her how he called out her name when he was delirious. Consul Wayland is agains a woman on the counsol and recommends his nephew, George Penhallow.
Will visits with Jem and finds that his year supply of yin fen is down to another because he wanted to live a fuller life. He allows Will to continue looking for a cure. Gabriel talks with Cecily in the training room and mentions Will leaving. Cecily follows, but Will finds out quickly. He allows her to tag along after some debate. Sophie brings Gideon a tray of tea and scones. He kisses her and she accidentally falls, knocking them both over. She sees the scones he has been hiding under his bed that he has been asking for everyday and scolds him for giving her extra work. Charlotte informs Henry that Jessimine is returning to the Institute because she can’t turn her away. henry is working on a portal, inspired by Mortmain’s rings. Tessa takes care of Jem and suggests alternate ways for him to live (become a Silent Brother or vampire) but nothing is feasible. Will tells Tesssa that there is no more yin fen to buy. They decide to go to Magnus for help. The council asks Josiah Wayland to reconsider his choice.
Consul Wayland expresses his suspicions of Charlotte. Will tells Jem that there is no more yin fen before he and Tessa leave to see Magnus. When they arrive, the werewolf leader, Woolsey, is there as well. Will tells them the problem. Woosley makes a comment about Will getting Tessa when Jem dies and Will attacks him. Magnus takes Will to another room, promises to look for yin fen, and gives him Camille’s necklace. Meanwhile, Tessa holds off Woolsey with a hot poker. They talk about the two men she loves. Will and Tessa leave and embrace on the front stairs. Tessa wants to comfort Will but knows she cannot replace Jem. Magnus feels like he is responsible for Will because he saved his live. Inquisitor Whitelaw writes to Consul Wayland for more information about Charlotte.
Consul Wayland fears that his legacy will be lost to Charlotte, but writes that it is only his previous mentioned suspicions. Jem surprises everyone by coming to breakfast and looking better. Consul Wayland comes for Gabriel because his sister has accussed him of murdering their father. Everyone tries to explain, but the Lightwood brothers are carted off to the Bone City. Consul Wayland also makes Charlotte give him Benedict’s notes. They leave and Charlotte announces Jessimine’s return to the Institute, which isn’t well received. Consul Wayland takes the Lightwoods to a gentlemen’s club instead of the Silent City. He threatens to have their and their sister’s marks removed and throw the family into the mundane world if they don’t agree to spy on Charlotte for him. Gideon agrees after Gabriel informs him that Tatiana is pregnant. Tessa and Sophie talk about how Gideon is not a possibility for Sophie to marry. The Lightwood brothers are dropped back off at the Institute. Gabriel explains his plans to read Charlotte’s correspondence and feed the Consul the wrong information. Gideon agrees.
The boys first letter complains of Charlotte’s clothing obsession causing them to starve. Cecily is in the training room still plotting to get Will to come home. Gabriel comes in and corrects her stance with a sword. Will finds them and warns Cecily that Gabriel is plotting revenge against Will for allegedly dishonoring Tatiana. Charlotte calls everyone together and reads them a not she received from Mortmain: yin fen for Tessa. He even sent a packet of the drug to prove that he has it. Tessa agrees to go to him. Jem throughs the letter and the packet in the fire. Will tries to get them out, but only saves some of the yin fen. Jem and Cecily stay with Will for a while. Will and Jem realize that they have traded places. Will wants to confide in Jem about his love, but cannot bring himself to do it. Cecily stays by Will’s chair while he sleeps. Consul Wayland is not amused with the letter the Lightwoods sent him.
Tessa feels bad about loving both Will and Jem. She now realizes that offering herself for Jem’s drug was a mistake. Church delivers a note from Jem telling her to meet him in the music room. Sophie catches the Lightwoods going through Charlotte’s correspondence. She agrees not only not to tell Charlotte, but to help them infuriate the Consul. Tess meets Jem and apologizes. He plays her a song he wrote for her and she cries because it shows her his soul. She doesn’t want to waste anymore of his life and agrees to marry him whenever he wants. Church catches them making out. Jem announces that they are moving the wedding up despite not getting approval from the Consul. Jessimine’s arrival takes everyone outside. Tessa and Will get held up and he tells her how much he loves her. She is interrupted before she can tell him the same, and he goes back upstairs. The carriage arrives with another one following. An automaton shoots an arrow from its are into one of the Silent Brothers.
The shadow hunters battle the automatons. Tessa goes inside and grabs a sword so she can help while looking for Jem. She is found by Mrs. Black. While Will is searching for Cyril, the drive, he thinks about Tessa. The necklace Magnus gave him pulses and he informs Brigid and Sophie that something is wrong downstairs. An automaton grabs Tessa, who would rather die than go with Mrs. Black (but Mortmain wants her alive). Jem comes to save her but is tripped by the machine. Tessa goes to help him, but Mrs. Black uses chloroform on her before she can get to him. Will, Sophie, and Brigid help the others fight. Will, assuming Tessa is safe inside, goes to help Jem first, who takes off out the gates as soon as his path is clear. Will goes to Jessimine next and finds that she is dying. Before she goes, she tells Will that Mortmain is in Idris and he (meaning Will) is a terrible Welshman. Jem returns, explaining that he tried to chase the carriage Tessa was taken in before he collapses.
Will sits by Jem’s bed while the Silent Brothers do what they can. Gabriel goes to get Will so that Cecily can explain where Tessa is. Mortmain took her to Cadair Idris, their home and the place Will fled from. Sophie forgives and takes care of Gideon after he apologizes. The Institute shadow hunters try to convince Consul Wayland that Mortmain is in Wales. he is unimpressed with their theory and tells them to talk to the Counsel when they meet in a fortnight. Will shows a little too much emotion at Tessa’s situation, but uses the parabatai excuse for his anger. Consul Wayland finds Gabriel alone before leaving. He offers to restore what was taken from the Lightwoods if he helps bring down Charlotte. Gabriel asks what Consul wants him to do. Magnus arrives at Will’s call. Will explains that he wanted to talk. Magnus asks if Jem knows that Will loves Tessa before agreeing to look over Jem while Will goes after Tessa. Magnus only agrees to it because Will treated him like a human. Magnus gives Will a moment with Jem, who wakes up and asks about Will being in love with Tessa.
Jem asks about the fight and Tessa being taken, which Will confirms. He asks Will again about his love for Tessa and Will explains what happened before he know they were engaged. Jem convinces Will to leave his deathbed to go after her. He gives them both his blessing. Cecily catches Will in the act of leaving. She wants to go with him, but he refuses. They compromise by agreeing that if Will returns, he must visit their parents, though neither of them would be able to stay permanently. Tessa wakes up in the carriage with Mrs. Black. She is being taken to mortmain because he has something Mrs. Black needs: a body.
Will rides and is reminded of his original journey to the Institute, and of Jem and Tessa. When Charlotte learns that Will has gone after Tessa, she calls everyone together. Since they cannot go after Will, she decides that they must do what they can to save Jem. Angry at everyone’s bickering, she dulls out tasks. Mrs. Black explains that she will get a real body from Mortmain for delivering Tessa, who will be the end of shadow hunters when she marries him. Tessa kicks open the carriage door and falls down a deep ravine. Will dreams of Tessa falling away from him and wakes in a cold sweat. He needs her strength. Gabriel and Cecily go to a shop to get requested ingredients for Magnus. The satyr, Sallows, behind the counter also gives him his father’s order when he learns Gabriel’s last name. Gideon asks Sophie if she ever thought of becoming a shadow hunter because she is the perfect candidate and a good fighter. When she says it is all she has ever wanted, he offers to mention her skill to the Counsil, which he is on. She agrees to this, but maybe sometime in the future. Charlotte walks in before he can kiss her and sends her to watch over Jem. Cecily seems amused by Gabriel’s violent reaction to his father’s pornographic order. Henry impresses Magnus with his inventions. He explains that he cannot make the portal work without magic. Magnus takes the papers because he can. A hooded man comes into the Satyr’s shop to ask some questions.
Tessa’s clockwork Angel came off from around her neck and grows. It slows down her fall so that she lands safely and then it shrinks back down to normal size. Jem wakes and talks to Sophie about Will and Tessa. On the road by the ravine, Will finds the necklace that Jem gave Tessa. He decides that is a marker for him to follow and he continues with hope again. Sophie is wondering if she will regret answering Jem’s question when Charlotte comes to relieve her. Jem wishes he could see her baby before telling Charlotte that it is over for him. Gabriel and Cecily make their way back to the Institute. She tells him that they can’t bare their parents’ sins. When they reach the library, Charlotte explains Jem’s decision. When Gabriel goes to hide in the training room, Cecily is already there. They talk about choices they have made and Cecily says she has faith that in the future Gabriel will make the right choices They hear the hooves of the Silent Brother’s carriage leaving with Jem. Will arrives at a down-worlder inn to rest for the night. Woolsey Scott, the werewolf, is there. Tessa is woken up by Will’s yelling of her name (when he finds the necklace on the road). Convinced it was a dream, she decides to follow the river downstream. As Will is eating, he checks the map and sends a letter to Charlotte, apologizing and telling her about the necklace. Shortly after he has the letter sent, there is a pain in his chest. He goes outside and sees that his parabatai ruin is bleeding and fading. Jem is dead. Tessa finds an old abandoned house and goes to rest. Five werewolves attack Will because they feel that the shadow hunters are responsible for Mortmain killing half of their pack. Will fights them off and kills one. Woolsey stops the fight and tells Will to live as Jem would have wanted him to.
Charlotte writes to Consul Wayland to inform him of what Will found. Tessa uses a blanket to change into an old woman before automatons come into the house to get her. her plan might have worked if it weren’t for Mrs. Black noticing the clockwork angel around her neck. Will had left the Inn the previous night after the fight. He wakes up in the grass and sees his silver parabatai rune. He cuts his hand and puts Jem’s dagger in the ground where the blood spilled, vowing that Will and Jem would meet in all of their next lives. The Consul dismisses Charlotte’s letter as the whims of an irresponsible boy. Aloysius Starkweather comes and admits that he killed Mortmain’s adoptive parents in a raid. He explains that the faeries took revenge on him by replacing his granddaughter, Adele, with a sickly mundane girl, Elizabeth. The mundane died when they attempted to give her marks. The shadow hunter married Richard Gray. Mortmain sent a demon to the shadow hunter disguised as Richard. The baby (possible because “Elizabeth” had no marks) was Tessa. Mortmain plans to use her to destroy shadow hunters. Gabriel writes to Consul about Starkweather’s story, calling him a madman and saying that Charlotte is unfit to run the Institute for believing him. He tries not to think of how betrayed Cecily will feel when she finds out.
Charlotte writes to Consul to tell him an informant has told her that Mortmain plans to use Tess a to end shadow hunters. Tessa wakes up in a cave. She finds that there is a barrier to separate it into two halves when she attempts to go for a door. Mortmain comes in and presents Mrs. Black’s remains to Tessa. He explains how Tessa come to be a demon/shadow hunter hybrid. He wants to use her to start a new race. The clockwork angel was made by his father and Mortmain tuned the piece containing part angel to protect Tessa’s life. Mortmain agrees to send all of his yin fen to Jem if she transforms into his father so he can talk to him. Will rides into Wales and keeps going until Balios collapses with exhaustion. Will starts to lead the horse to a nearby town, frustrated that Tessa is close, but knowing they need rest. Assuming that Mortmain sent the yin fen to Jem, she changes into his father. She doesn’t have control like she normally would have. Mortmain asks for the spell to complete his plan and Tess starts writing it out. She stops and changes back to herself, but it is too late.
Charlotte calls on Gabriel to talk about his grieving for his father. As he breaks down, she holds him. Consul writes back to Charlotte telling her to stop pestering him or any other shadow hunters about Cadir Idris. Charlotte reads the letter from the Consul to the rest of the Shadow hunters. Gabriel tells Charlotte about Consul Wayland’s offer, his plans to destroy her, and the letter he wrote but couldn’t send. They all proclaim their loyalty to Charlotte. Gideon suggests that Sophie ascend to shadow hunter status and Charlotte agrees that when they return from helping Will and Tess, she will send her recommendation. Gideon declares that he will marry Sophie. Cecily shoos everyone out of the room to leave Gideon and Sophie alone. Cecily and Gabriel listen through the wall. Gideon declares his love for Sophie and she points out that he has not actually proposed yet. Gideon asks Sophie to marry him and she accepts. Cecily becomes a little teary over the romantic scene. Gabriel moves in to kiss her, but she leaves hastily. Cecily writes to her parents to tell them that she loves them, but is a shadow hunter and cannot return. Neither could Will. Charlotte sends out her message to the Clave telling her plans to stop Mortmain and inviting them to join her.
Tessa is woken up by Mortmain, who introduces her to Armaros. The spell Tessa retrieved for Mortmain allowed the demon (who had fought Jonathan Shadowhunter) to be released from the pyxis and put into an automaton body. These demon machines are immune to shadow hunters’ weapons that have marks. Tessa tries to appeal to Mortmain’s vanity, agreeing that if he doesn’t destroy the shadow hunters, she will stay with him. He wants to show her what he has been waiting for. Victor Whitelaw demands a Council meeting regarding Charlotte’s letter. He threatens to publicly resign if a meeting isn’t called as soon as possible. Will is woken up by screaming and quickly finds Mortmain’s demon possessed automatons burning and killing the entire city. When on of them turns his sereph blade to ash, he retreats and escapes on Balios. Mortmain makes Tessa watch the destruction of the city, showing her that she will listen to him to prevent any more of it. When she mentions the demons turning on him, Mortmain explains that they will die if he does. She smashes her clockwork angel with a fire poker and the angel that was trapped inside, Ithuriel, appears to her saying that it will not stop protecting her. Tessa wakes up with the angel around her neck again. Will follows the automaton’s tracks up Cadir Idris and into a lake. Consul Wayland tells Charlotte to leave the Institute.
Will is sucked under the water and into the mountain. He starts down a path and passes a cavern full of automatons. The hallway narrows before opening up into a hallway with doors. He finds Tessa behind the third one and goes to her. They embrace and she tells him about the barrier that now traps them both. Will explains that he has come alone and inadvertently lets Tessa know that Jem has died. They mourn together. They decide that Will will be killed when Mortmain finds them. Tessa asks for a weapon so that she can go down fighting as well. She tells Will that they are the same and asks for a kiss. They end up sleeping together. Tessa wakes up to find the clockwork angel resting on Will’s shoulder by his collar bone and left a mark (Jace’s birthmark that identifies his lineage in City of Glass).
Magnus opens the portal, which makes most of the shadow hunters nervous. Three Silent Brothers, Enoch, Micah, and Zachariah, arrive to go with them. Cecily pictures the top of Cadir Idris and steps through the portal. Consul Wayland called everyone together to discuss Charlotte’s replacement. Inquisitor Whitelaw backs Charlotte and questions why they are not sending her aid. They are all arguing when the clockwork creatures come in and behead the Consul. The room fills up with their enemies. Magnus wakes up Will and Tessa. They awkwardly get dressed, and Tessa wears shadow hunter gear for the first time (which Magnus brought for her). The warlock gives them a minute after explaining what is going on. Neither seems to regret their decision. Tessa says she believes everything Will says and notes that he was not lying about the dragon of Wales tattoo. Most of the group joined Sophie in the cavern full of automatons. Cyril and Magnus are the only two still missing. Henry touches the ourobouros symbol on one, waking it up. It snaps his body and knocks out Charlotte before Henry can finish explaining how the devices are possessed by demons.
Magnus starts leading the way back to the others. Will takes the lead when he hears Cecily scream. The shadow hunters and servants are fighting the automatons when a Silent Brother saves Cecily. Another automaton gets hold of him and his hood flies back to reveal Jem. Tessa ignores Magnus trying to protect her and runs towards Jem. An automaton fell on him, but being a Silent Brother saved him from being crushed to death. Jem meets up with Will and they together for the last time. Armaros carries Tessa away from the fight, promising to kill her when her angel fails. Cecily makes her way to Charlotte and tells her that they must retreat. Charlotte says Henry still has a pulse and refuses to leave him. Magnus appears, sparks Henry so that they can make a portal. henry has Cecily throw a box that knocks down the automatons, separating the demons from their bodies. Magnus calls out for the shadow hunters to gather, but Will and Jem stop when they realize Tessa is missing. Mortmain appears and demands Tessa. Armaros was untouched by Henry’s device because he was in an alcove with Tessa. He brings her before Mortmain. She threatens and pleads, but Mortmain only offers a horrible existence for Tessa and her friends. She uses the clockwork Angel to transform into Ithuriel and crushes Mortmain wither her hand, killing all the automatons. However, she cannot seem to change back into herself and is engulfed in light.
Tessa is ill from the angel fire. They only reason she survived was because Ithuriel protected her, but has now been freed. The shadow hunters suffered many losses, but Tessa saved so many of them. Charlotte asks Brother Enoch about Jem, but he won’t reveal much because he is supposed to sever all ties with his mortal life. Charlotte comes to relieve Will from watching over Henry, who is trying to design a chair to accommodate the loss of functionality in his legs. The Inquisitor comes with a letter for Charlotte. They argue and Will leaves, wondering what will happen. Tessa wakes briefly. Gabriel spends the day looking for Cecily, afraid that she will be returning to her parents. She tells him she is staying and he kisses her. Will relieves Sophie from watching Tessa. She apologizes for speaking ill of him before she know about the curse. While Will is alone with Tessa, she calls out for Jem, apologizing for what she brought upon him. Will calls out for Charlotte and asks her to get Jem there so that he and Tessa can sever the tie between them. She agrees to try. Gideon seeks out Sophie in concern because she seems distant. She explains her sympathy for Will and concern for Charlotte. He convinces her to go talk to Charlotte. Sophie finds that Charlotte has been offered the Consul position, but doesn’t want to be in charge of sending shadow hunters to their deaths. Sophie reminds her of how many lives she saved at the cost of her husband’s legs. Charlotte agrees to accept under three conditions. 1. She remains at the London Institute at first. 2. Will will take her place when she goes to Idris. 3. Jem comes to see Tessa.
Jem arrives and gives her something to make her lucid for a time. She tells him that she would rather he lived as a Silent Brother than die. She confesses her love for both him and Will, and he stops her from divulging too much information. He agrees to meet her once a year for an hour on Blackfriar’s Bridge before he leaves. jem goes to see Will. Jem explains that Will doesn’t need him, he needs to live a happy life, even if it is with Tessa. They say their goodbyes. Charlotte comes to get Will because Tessa is awake and asking for him. They talk about what happened in Cadair Idris and agree not to make any decisions while they are both so overwhelmed. Tessa asks Will to read to her and he agrees to it.
Sophie ascends to shadow hunter on Christmas. Tessa remembers the awkwardness of Will’s first attempts at courting her. She told him to be himself and it started getting better. He gave her the inscribed copy of A Tale of Two Cities he wrote in the day he found out about the curse. At the Christmas party, Jem’s Uncle Elias tries to give Will a sword that was meant for Jem. Will turns it down when Elias speaks of Jem in the past tense. Tessa suggests that Elias consider giving it to his own children if he ever decides to have any. Tessa goes to comfort Will. He declares his love and proposes. She accepts. Will, Tessa, Cecily, and Gabriel prepare to take a portal to visit Will and Cecily’s parents. The maid recognizes Cecily right away, but when she sees Will, she immediately runs to get their parents. There is a warm welcome for the Herondale children while Tessa and Gabriel wait to be introduced. Will introduces his fiance and then Gabriel “Lightworm.”
Tessa waits for her yearly meeting with Brother Zachariah. She recalls her life with Will as he grew old and died She left her children and grandchildren behind to avoid watching their deaths. She visits Magnus and they move to New York. Tess is completely shocked when Jem arrives, a human once again. He found a cure with some help and had the Silent Brother’s marks removed. He is about to ask Tessa something, but runs away. Tessa debates for a moment if she can handle watching another man she loves grow old and die. She runs after him and shows him the jade pendant he gave her. She asks him to go with her and he accepts. They kiss
