Divergent 2
by Veronica Roth
Tris, Four, Marcus, Caleb, and Peter are on the train to get away from the city. They jump off at the gate where Four luckily knows the code. They go through and find the Amity headquarters where they are granted sanctuary for the night. Four hands over his gun, but keeps Tris from disarming herself. Peter is taken to the hospital for the bullet wound Tris gave him. Someone puts a salve on Tris’ shoulder and she drinks something that will prevent her from dreaming.
Tris wakes up and Susan from Abnegation helps her get ready. She ends up cutting her hair to chin length as best she can because she feels like she should look different after her parents’ deaths. She meets up with everyone and they watch the Amity make their decision on whether they can stay. Amit agrees to be a sanctuary for all factions, but no weapons or fighting is allowed. Tris and Four know that they won’t be able to stay long.
Spotting Marcus and the Amity leader, Johanna, Tris decides to eavesdrop. Marcus says that Abnegation holds a secret that the Erudite want, which is why the attacked. Marcus refuses to tell what the secret information is. Tris goes to tell Four and finds him showing Caleb how to throw a butter knife into a block of cheese. After Caleb leaves, she finds out that Caleb came to have the “big brother” talk with his sister’s boyfriend. She tells Four what she overheard, but he thinks his father is lying to make himself seem more important than he is. He wants to go back to the city and take down the Erudite. Tris can’t argue because she doesn’t have any proof.
In the dinning hall, Caleb explains that the aptitude tests where his area of study as a Erudite. He is curious about Tris’ results and she uncomfortably tells him. Four is frustrated when he comes to join them, but doesn’t say why. Marcus approaches Tris to ask her to escort them back to Abnegation. She looks to Four and he says they will leave in two days.
Tris wakes from a nightmare about Will. She goes to Four’s room and they start kissing. Tris stops before they go too far because she doesn’t want to be with him to forget her grief. She cries and he holds her until she falls asleep.
When Tris returns to her own room in the morning, she finds Peter there. He has taken the hard drive and is convinced there is more information on it than just the simulation She attacks him and Four comes in to break it up. he retrieves the hard drive and Tris is taken for punishment. She is injected with something to make her more peaceful and goes to find Four. he takes her to see Johanna, who explains that the serum is necessary in some cases, but Tris was given too much. She warns them not to eat the bread. Four tells her that they are leaving and not taking Peter.
Tris is hiding, embarrassed by how she acted on the Amity serum. She hears cars while in the apple orchard and climbs to see Erudite cars. She runs in to warn the Abnegation runaways, and they decide it would be best to dress and act like Amity. However, Four is a dead giveaway fro Dauntless and is found out. He starts fighting, but Tris freezes and Caleb has to shoot a Dauntless man in the leg to save her. They get out and start running, but only Tris, Four, Caleb, and Susan make it out. Four questions what happened to Tris and she says it won’t happen again. They start traveling down the railroad tracks.
The four refugees jump on a train and come fact to face with a group of armed factionless. Edward is among them. Four tells them his name and they agree to let them ride the train if Four agrees to meet someone. When they get to where they are going, are taken to meet his mother, Evelyn. Four loathes her because she left him behind with his father. She explains that the factionless have been gathering (now twice the size of Dauntless) and waiting for the factions to start colliding.
At Dinner, stories are told about how different people became factionless. Edward is happy that Tris shot Peter in the arm. Tris wakes up in the middle of the night to hear Four talking to his mom. She wants to overthrow Erudite and start a society without factions. However, she needs Four to bridge the gap between them and Dauntless for weapons. She also tells him that she left him with Marcus because she thought it would be better for him since they suspected his Divergence.
Tris and Susan help each other get clean. Evelyn explains to Tris how the factionless will send messages to each other in code on old billboards. Tris points out that she left Erudite and so did Tris’ father, who was close to Jeanine. Tris realizes that Evelyn is trying to get under her skin. Four and Tris leave for Candor headquarters shortly after and are arrested by Dauntless guards as soon as they identify themselves.
A Candor leader, Jack, explains that from the security footage it looks like Four was running the control room for the Erudite of his own free will. Then Tris gave up and they ran off with the hard drive when the simulation ended. They will be given truth serum and be questioned. As the wait, Christina comes along with other Dauntless to escort them. She tells Tris about Will and Tris says she saw it on the monitors. Four knows that she is lying. They get to where they will be questioned and Four will go first.
Four is injected with the truth serum. After a few basic questions, Tris is angry that they ask him about why he left Abnegation. He resists the serum at first, but eventually he tells the whole story about the serum made specifically for the Divergent. he thought that he was disabling the simulation when he was actually running it. Lastly, they ask what his deepest regret is and he says leaving Abnegation. He was about to leave Dauntless and become factionless until he met Tris. Once he is done, Tris injects herself. She gives her side of the story when they ask what her regret is, she tells them about Will.
Tris tries to talk to Christina, but her friend is too upset to hear it. She takes the chair she was questioned in and throws it off the roof. She understand’s Al’s decision, but decides that suicide would be wasting her parents’ sacrifice. Four starts walking and Tris follows until they are alone. He is upset that she didn’t trust him enough to tell him about Will. She explains that she can control herself with the truth serum and decided to tell him. She fires back about how he has also kept things from her. Four storms off.
The Dauntless-born members of Tris’ initiate class help her get settled in. Uriah is dealing with his brother siding with the Erudites. Lynn offers for Tris to go do surveillance with them. As they exit the Candor headquarters, they are ambushed by Erudite-supporting Dauntless. guns go off and Tris is not able to move fast enough.
Tris finds that she is not wounded, but notices that the other Dauntless seem to be unconscious. She pretends to be asleep until the enemy has gone higher up in the building. Uriah is also awake. They take traitor jackets with blue Erudite armbands and head to separate floors to warn whoever they can find. While helping a Divergent Candor girl escape, Eric finds Tris and has her guarded wit the other Divergent. Uriah joins her shortly. She remembers she still has a knife.
Tris is waiting for her moment to kill Eric. She watches him kill and eleven year old boy next to her because he can only brink back two people to the Erudites. The boy wasn’t fully developed. Tris screams and Eric comes to mock her. Tris stabs him. Uriah gets a chance to knock out another guard and take his gun. Four arrives with other loyal Dauntless and fend off the traitors. Tris freaks out.
Will’s sister, Cara, was with the Erudite troop. She ran up to a higher floor to warn everyone what was happening and enabled them to surround the enemy. Tris shows Four the blue dye that is left in her arm from the needle she was shot with and pulls out. They think it is good for multiple simulations rather than just one. She also tells him that his father and Peter are alive. Caleb is there and came with Marcus. Four is worried about Tris’ selfless actions because he doesn’t want to loose her. Tris sits and chats with her brother and her Dauntless friends as they exchange faction ways of life and ideas.
Jack calls a meeting to discuss what happened. He thinks the Erudite only wanted the Divergent. So to protect the majority, Jack wants to talk peace with Jeanine. Tris tries to explain about the injections, but everyone thinks that she is paranoid. She realizes that if they want to fight the Erudite and Dauntless traitors, they will need the factionless.
The Erudite are going to send a representative to talk to Jack about peace. Zeke comes in carrying Tori. The Dauntless believe they are traitors, but it is soon revealed that they were spies. Tris sits among her Dauntless friends to determine what to do. They realize that they need to listen in on the peace talk.
The small group of Dauntless sit and wait for their opportunity to eavesdrop on Jack’s peace conversation. A few other Dauntless pass by Four and call him a coward. He gets up and storms over to his father to beat him with his belt. After a while, Tris stops him and he drops his mother’s wedding ring for him. She realizes he’s thinking something, but he is not willing to talk to her. Tris goes to Marcus and tells him that he is going to need her. He doesn’t believe her and shoos her away.
Four tries to talk to Tris out of going to eavesdrop on Jack’s conversation with the Erudite. When he can’t, he decides to go with her. They position themselves under a metal bridge and look through the mesh to see. Tris realizes that the representative, Max, the Dauntless leader, is wearing an earpiece for his side of the communication. Max points out that Candor is useless to them because they don’t provide anything necessary. Lynn crawls over the bridge and shoots Max. Tris and Four run after Jeanine, knowing that she is close. However, when they get close, Peter stops them. They hear screams and go back for their friends.
Back a the bridge, Shauna was shot and lies face down. Four carries her and tells Uriah to get a doctor. Once Shauna is in better hands, Four tells Tris that if she keeps acting like a Dauntless rather than a Divergent, they are done. Tris visits Tori and asks her to call a meeting. The Dauntless realize they can’t stay with the Candor and decide to go home. They nominate new leaders because the last ones were all traitors. Tris is nominated, but refuses the position, allowing Four a spot. She realizes he is right about her needing to be Divergent instead of Dauntless.
The Dauntless go up to the interrogation room to deal with Eric, even though the Candor need him to complete their deal with the Erudite. Eric asks Tris to list his offenses and then requests that Four is the one that shoots him. He tries to rattle both of them.
While getting ready to leave Candor headquarters, Jack tries to stop them by saying he will side with Erudite. They run past him and back to their own home. Cara, Will’s sister, stops Tris. Tris tells her to go to Amity for sanctuary. Back in the Pit, Zeke tells Tris that Shauna will likely be paralyzed from the waist down. Tris explains that she can still be Dauntless. They grab paintball guns and head to the Pire to shoot out cameras. Glad to be home, the chore quickly turns into a game of shooting each other.
The Dauntless find food and enjoy some time eating. Uriah and Marlee upset Lynn with their PDA. Four asks Tris to join him. They jump on the train and meet with Evelyn and Edward. Tris can’t quite decide why, but she doesn’t trust that what Evelyn says is true. The factionless want to destroy Erudite files because knowledge is their power. She explains that she left Abnegation because Marcus convinced them to exile her. Tris explains her bad feelings about this, but only after Four has already made the alliance. He doesn’t want to listen to her because he thinks she is biased.
Christina wakes Tris in the middle of the night and they run to the roof where Marlene, Hector (Lynn’s little brother), and a young girl stand on the ledge. They are in a simulation. Marlene explains that this is a warning from the Erudite. One Divergent must deliver his or her self to them or this will happen every other night. The three Dauntless on the ledge jump. Christina gets the little girl and Tris gets Hector. Marlene falls.
Tris hides from the Dauntless and Christina approaches her to let her know that she forgives her for killing Will after seeing people in a simulation. Shauna is avoiding uriah and Zeke because she found out that Uriah is Divergent. Lynn thanks Tris for saving Hector. Four has Tris promise that she isn’t going to give herself to the Erudite, but she knows that she is lying.
Once Four falls asleep, Tris sneaks out of his room to tell Christina lies about where she is going. She sways she is going to find Caleb to find out Marcus’ secret that the Abnegation hold. She leaves and goes to Erudite headquarters where they lock her in a small room with cameras.
After waiting a long time, Tris is taken to get an MRI. She makes a deal that she will stay still in the machine for an accurate reading if they let her see the scan. Jeanine agrees and even explains the results. Tris has a large part of her brain for organizing goals and a small part for rewards, which seems to explain her selfless actions. Peter is taking her back to her room when she sees two Dauntless traitors leading Four. She yells at him for coming he tells her that if she dies, he is dying with her. In her room, she lets the tears fall and asks Peter to find out what they will do to him.
When the time comes, Peter takes Tris to Jeanine for a simulation. Tris injects herself and is suddenly out. she is on her way through a demolished city with her mother to Erudite headquarters for help. Once Tris realizes that her mother is dead and it is a simulation, she breaks glass by pointing and the simulation ends.
Peter leads Tris to a room where they strap her to a table. They bring in Four and tell him that if he doesn’t tell the Erudite about the factionless safe house, they will inject Tris with a fear serum. Tris tells him not to tell them and they inject her. She can’t think because she is too scared. She sees birds and then Four. He stabs himself and the birds swarm him. She is brought out with a sedative. Four agrees to give the safe house information. Jeanine shows Tris who has been helping her: Caleb.
Peter comes to get Tris and she sees that she will pass Four in the hallway. Before they meet, he takes out his own guards and Peter allows him to take Tris. He passes an exit and the two control rooms as he carries her. He takes her to a supply closet and shoots the cameras before explaining himself. her execution is set for two weeks from now. That is when the Dauntless, factionless, and Abnegation will attack. Four came because he needed to find the control rooms to take out the Erudite’s most powerful weapon.
Tris is alone with Caleb and he admits that he has always been Erudite. He says its not about what is going on inside, but outside the city walls. Jeanine comes along with other Erudites and they tell her in a class-like setting that she has a lot of mirror neurons in her brain that allow her to mimic three different factions. She acts nonchalant and asks to go back to her room. Tris wakes up to Four telling her that they have to leave. They run, but she is confused as to why they are running now. Four touches her hurt shoulder and she realizes it is a simulation and breaks out of it. Jeanine is frustrated and holds a gun to Tris’ head. Tris refuses to tell her how she knows they are simulations.
Tris spends a lot of time thinking about her parents. Peter comes to tell her that she will be executed the next day and the experiments will continue on Four. Before he leaves, he answers the question she repeatedly asks him: he tells her what time it is. Tris decides that she will project herself outward and die the way of the Abnegation.
Peter escorts Tris to her execution. He takes her by Four’s room so that they can see each other through a small window one last time. She passes the Dauntless traitors in the hallway and into a room filled with Erudite. Peter hooks her up to a heart monitor and after Jeanine injects her with purple serum, tells her to be brave. She drifts off with her eyes open. She realized too late that she wanted to live, but thinks that if this is dying, it is not so bad.
Tris is barely breathing and the heart monitor says she’s dead. Peter closes her eyes, but she is still awake. He carts her body out of the room and past the Dauntless before he starts running. He carries her to Four and gives him his gun. Tris recovers and they escape through the trash incinerator that Peter turned off. They take the most illogical path to an abandoned building to hide. Peter says he helped Tris because she saved him at the Amity compound and couldn’t stand owing her. After a few hours, they escape to the Abnegation sector of the city. Four takes Tris to his parents old house where his mother and the Dauntless leaders are. He cleans her up and she starts sobbing over the loss of her family. They declare their love for each other.
Tris wakes up and after showering, she finds her friends in Four’s room. They joke around a little before joining the rest of the group downstairs. Edward sees Peter and threatens him. Four starts to give Edward’s back story since leaving the Dauntless, but she doesn’t want to hear it. Tris is surprised by how comfortable Four is with the factionless. She wanders the streets and goes to the Abnegation meeting place. Marcus comes in to tell Tris about the secret information (which her mother was willing to die for) but choses to save her instead. Marcus says they were going to reveal the information to everyone, but couldn’t. Tris will have to see for herself because he cannot describe it. She knows she will loose Four if she trusts Marcus.
The Dauntless and factionless gather around fire barrels and their leaders for the attack plan. Tris notices that they are still segregated. Christina says the attack doesn’t feel right and Tris agrees. She goes to Four’s room. He joins her and she tells him that she is too scared to go back to Erudite headquarters. he tells her she can stay behind and she knows she is betraying him.
Tris and Christina meets Marcus in Amity clothes to fool the Dauntless guards. They reach Amity and Johanna asks the faction to reconsider their uninvolved policy. They deliberate, but stick with their initial decision even though they know that in two days, the Dauntless and factionless will attack both innocent and guilty Erudites alike. Johanna is leaving the faction to go to the city and a few of the Amity join her. Tris and Christina find Cara and tell her that they have a plan and need the Erudite refugees help. She agrees to listen.
The Erudite defectors show Tris and Christina the flaws in their plan. They suggest they send the data out over a network to all of the factions. They also supply a few gadgets that will make getting past the Erudite easier. Those that are heading to the city load up in trucks and leave Amity headquarters.
Tris, Christina, Cara, and Fernando make it to Erudite central, but the building is surrounded by Candors in simulation. Tris still can’t take a gun, so Fernando gives her a stunner. They go into a building in back of Erudite headquarters and Tris sees a window that line up to get them in on the third floor.
They find a ladder and use it to get across. Luckily, the Candor below aren’t triggered by sound, only movement. Unfortunately Fernando doesn’t make it and they have to leave his body behind.
The rest of the small group makes it through the crowd of Erudites to control room A. Caleb finds them and Tris yells at him for betraying her. he tells them that Jeanine wouldn’t keep the data on a public computer before Marcus knocks him out with his gun. Cara stays while the rest head to the top floor for Jeanine’s laboratory. They run into Edward on the stairwell. There is a struggle and Christina’s leg is hit in the side by a bullet. Edward is shot in the side by Marcus, who points out that Jeanine is probably deleting the data. They failed.
There are two doors. Tris and marcus each decide to take one. Tris enters hers and is immediately locked in. gas emits and she told she has five minutes to get to the other door. She is in a simulation and must face herself. She realizes that she is more desperate than her shadow and shoots even after she hallucinates that it is Will.
Tris sees Tori with a gun pointed at Jeanine and tries to stop her and explain the situation. Tris is able to get the gun, but Tori stabs Jeanine.
Four and Uriah enter the room. Four instantly knows what Tris has done and brands her a traitor, at least to him. She yells at him for lying to her about how he felt because he obviously never trusted her. Uriah takes her to sit with Christina and the other traitors. Four comes for Caleb so he can disable Jeanine’s security. Lynn is brought out, but dies from a bullet wound because they destroyed the Erudite hospital. Her last words confess her love for Marlene.
Evelyn comes into the room and announces that the factionless are taking over and disbanding all factions. However, in the middle of her speech, Four appears. Tris expects him to be furious with her, but he is happy. A video starts playing on the wall. Blood and gruesome death floods the screen and then a woman comes on. She says they are the solution to the violence. When the number of Divergent grow, the Amity should open the gates so that they can help others outside. The woman would soon forget the violent life she described and become Edith Prior.
