1. Brooke applied for any job she could within a 60 minute commute, but Raker Maximum Security Penitentiary was the only one that called her. She is buzzed through the first set of bars by a corrections officer with dead eyes. She then goes through security where she and her purse go through a metal detector before the officer tells her no high heels. He directs her to the medical offices. She meets Dorthy there who gives her the tour and rundown of the job. There is a small exam room where Brooke will keep all medical records on paper. There is a filing room with all of the medical records. Lastly, there is a supply closet with basic medical materials. She says Brooke can write prescriptions, but only she can administer drugs. She warns about selling what little narcotics they have on site to the prisoners as that is how the last nurse practitioner lost her job and is on her way to her own prison. Brooke asks if there is a supervising doctor. Dr. Wittenberg travels between 10 prisons and won’t be available often. Dorthy warns her not to give the inmates any personal information and asks if she has any children. She says she has a son and Dorthy warns her not to tell the inmates especially that. Brooke asks nervously if she will see everyone at the prison and Dorthy says she is the only nurse practitioner they have so she will. Brooke doesn’t tell her her ex boyfriend is in that prison because of her. (I’m guessing this is the father of her son. Something happened and she had the info to put him away even though she was reluctant about it. He’s going to see her and convince her of his innocence and start back up the relationship while she tries to find the evidence that will free him)
2. When Brooke gets home from work, the babysitter, Margie, is pulling dinner out of the oven. Her 10-year-old son, Josh, has been watching TV and playing video games all day to enjoy the end of the summer. As Brooke walks Margie to the door, Margie tells her Josh is nervous about starting school. They had just moved back to Riker after both of her parents died in a car accident. Her parents had always insisted on visiting them in the city and not having g them come back to Riker. The previous year in Queens, Josh had been bullied. The kids called him “bastard” because he didn’t have a father. The school faculty shrugged it off and told Brooke to put him in a different school. She tries to tell Josh things will be better at Riker, but he’s skeptical. He asks if he will finally be able to meet his dad, but Brooke tells him he doesn’t live there anymore.
3. Back at the prison, Brooke sees a few prisoners that are grateful to have medical care again since the left nurse practitioner left. She tries not to think of what the men have done to be there and let’s Hunt determine how much privacy they should be given. She prescribed Mr. Henderson an inhaler and asks if he told Dorothy about his breathing issues. He says Dorothy told him not to be a baby and sent him on his way. He asks if Brooke is married, and - despite Dorothy’s warning not to give any personal details- she tells him she is not. Hunt, the corrections officer that stands outside the door, takes him away and says she has a break. She doesn’t have anything to do during her break, so she goes into the file room. She ignores the pile of files in the corner that belong to people that are no longer there and goes for the Ns. She finds Shane Nelson’s file and sees he is still there. Hunt finds her in the file room and tells her he will pull files for her. She lies and says she was just adding a note to a patient’s chart before she exits.
4. Eleven years earlier. Four months ago, a girl had been found murdered in the woods. Parents were terrified for a while, but things were getting back to normal. Brooke has been dating Shane for three months, but her parents don’t approve of him. An typo joke between them is saying “lope” instead of “love” and they tell each other they “lope” each other. He has a reputation of being a trouble maker, but has improved since he joined the football team and became the star quarterback. He drops Brooke off a few blocks from her house. Her friend Chelsea will pick her up later to take her to his house where they will meet Shane and Brandon for a small party while Shane’s mom is out of town. He drives his beat up junker Chevy away. Tim Reese, childhood friend, greets Brooke, but is upset she is dating a bully. She invites him to join them and he reluctantly agrees. When she was 10 he bought her a snow flake necklace (because they loved playing in the snow together) and she has worn it everyday since. (I’m guessing Tim murdered the girl in the woods. He intends to murder Shane so he can be with Brooke, but something happens that makes it look like Shane is going to murder Brook and he uses it to frame him)
5. Brooke drops Josh off at his new school. He is nervous and she wishes she could do more to protect him. After he goes inside, she hears someone call her name. She turns to see Tim Reese coming up to her. He is the Vice Principal at the school and has been living at his parents’ house since they move to Florida a few years ago. She notices how much he has grown up and filled out. She tells him she was dropping off her son for his first day of school and he assumes he is in kindergarten. She doesn’t correct him because he could do the math and he was there that night and thinks about the scars he must have left over from it. He asks about her husband and she tells him she isn’t married. He asks her to coffee, but she isn’t interested in rehashing the past with someone she used to know so well.
6. Mr. Carpenter was paralyzed from a bullet to his spine while he was committing his crime. He has a pressure ulcer on his coccyx from being in his wheel chair/bed all day/night. She tries to prescribe him a mattress that will help, but Dorothy says it isn’t in the budget and she will have to find a creative solution. Brooke tries to argue, but a call comes to Dorothy’s desk. There was a fight in the yard and Hunt is bringing her an inmate that was injured. As she starts heading back to her exams room, she sees the guy Hunt is bringing her is going to bleeding and going to need stitches. It is Shane.
7. Eleven years ago. Chelsea lays on the horn until Brooke gets into her Volkswagen Beetle. A girl named Kayla - one of their cheerleader teammates - is in the backseat and asks if Tim is going to be there. Brooke confirms it and realizes Kayla is interested in Tim. She texts Shane to confirm his mom is gone. They pick up Tim, who doesn’t know who Kayla is and isn’t really into cheerleaders. Chelsea asks Tim why he didn’t bring anything because they are staying the night. He says he doesn’t need anything. Poke finds this odd because when they had sleepovers as kids, he was always prepared. They take off for Shane’s house.
8. Shame stops in his tracks when he sees Brooke and Hunt has to push him forward to the exam room. Brooke goes to close the door and Hunt warns her against it. She tells him she will be okay but leaves it open a bit. She removes the bandage and sees he will need stitches. She gets the sutures and goes to Dorothy for lidocaine, but Dorothy tells her they are out. Brooke is infuriated with how the inmates are being treated. She goes back to the exam room and tells Shane to lie down. She ends up having to help him because he wrists and ankles are cuffed. She expected to react to touching him, but she doesn’t. She is proud of herself for being over the trauma. She starts stitching and he winced a bit. He is impressed she is a nurse and tells her he got his GED and tutors other inmates to help them get theirs as well. He asks about her not being married and tells her their are rumors going around about the cute new nurse that is single with a kid. When he asks, she lies and says her son is five. He says he is surprised she is back and asks about her parents. She tells him they died, but they weren’t close. He says his mom died a few years back believing he killed people when he hadn’t done it. No matter how much he tries to say he didn’t do it, Brooke was there that night and knows he did.
9. Eleven years earlier. Chelsea drives onto the mile long gravel road that leads to Shane’s house. Brooke thinks how unfair it is the school bus wouldn’t drive down it to pick him up, but would drop her off right in front of her house. Shane greets them at the door and is surprised Brooke brought Tim. She explains they also brought Kayla for Tim. Brooke catches Tim staring at them while she is kissing Shane. Shane goes over to talk to him, but the conversation is too quiet for Brooke to hear. When Brandon comes out of the kitchen with pizza and vodka, they all go to join him.
10. Brooke finishes stitching up Shane. He tries to tell her he loved her and wasn’t the one trying to kill her. Tim had knocked him out with a baseball bat and the next thing he knew he was waking up and being arrested. Brooke tells him she can’t listen to him. Hunt comes in and asks if they are done. When Brooke says they are, he calls Shane a piece of shit and tells him to get going. Brooke thinks back to the night it all happened. The power was out and it was pitch black. She never saw who attacked her, she just smelled his sandalwood aftershave as someone tried to choke her with her necklace. She doesn’t want to think about how she could have made a mistake all those years ago.
11. On the way home, Brooke can’t help thinking about Shane. When she gets home, she sees she has a text from Tim. He looked her up in the parent directory and found her number. He asks her to change coffee to drinks. She debates a bit before deciding it will be okay because Tim will back off if she needs him to. She goes inside to confirm with Margie that she can stay later one night. Margie thinks it is a good idea for Brooke to date and that Josh needs a dad. Brooke makes plans with Tim for the next night. (Tim looking up her number, changing coffee to drinks, and quick responses add up to creeper level)
12. Eleven years earlier. The group of teenagers decide to play “never have I ever.” Chelsea tries to embarrass Brooke and Tim, but neither admit they have kissed. Before they started high school, they had decided to practice kissing with each other, but Brooke doesn’t think it counts. When her mom caught them, they weren’t allowed alone in her room with the door closed anymore. Tim uses his turn to get Shame to confess he beat up a kid that ended up in the hospital with a broken rib. He admits he let his anger get the better of him when a guy named Mark was talking about his mom. As payback, Shane says he had never been on a date with Tracy Gifford, the girl that was murdered the previous summer. Tim takes a drink
13. In their will, Brooke’s parents left her everything and instructions to use a realtor name Estelle to sell the house. When Brook goes outside to wait for Tim, Estelle is there and trying to convince Brooke to sell the house. Brooke tells her not to contact her again. When her parents sent her away, she only excepted their money long enough to get through school. They only sent enough for the bare necessities and made it clear they didn’t want her back in Raker ever. Tim picks her up and they go to a bar called Shamrocks. The waitress (former cheerleader that graduated two years after them) flirts with Tim as she takes their order and brings them their drinks. Brooke asks if they dated and he admits they went in two dates before she went back to her boyfriend. He knew she wasn’t right for him, so he wasn’t upset by it. She tells him her life is very complicated and she is only looking for friendship. He says it is mutual. She believes he’ll respect her wishes because he saved her life 10 years ago. (Did Tim set it all up so he would look like the hero or is Tim the red herring?)
14. That Saturday Brooke leaves Josh at home and goes grocery shopping. She runs into the waitress, Kelli, in the aisles. She tries to avoid her, but when they make eye contact Brooke waves. Kelli recognizes her from the bar and says Tim brings in a lot of women. Brooke explains she knows they dated a bit, but her and time were just old friends. Brooke continues to give her a hard time about it until she realizes who Brooke is. She blames Brooke for having Shane locked up and says she knows he never would have done what she accused him of. Brooke doesn’t bother to explain how it was mostly Tim’s testimony that was what put Shane away. Brooke reminds her she wasn’t there that night and then runs off to finish her shopping. When she gets back into the car, she realizes she forgot her son’s cereal.
15. Eleven years earlier. Everyone has questions for Tim. He tells them he went out on two dates with Tracey and then she stopped returning his calls. He didn’t tell anyone because he didn’t have any relevant information that would have helped. He storms off to the kitchen and Brooke follows. She is shocked he didn’t my tell her about it. He explains he was a bit freaked out by it, but didn’t have anything to do with her disappearance. He tries to warn her it is my safe for her to be with Shane, but before he can tell her why, Shane comes in and asks Brooke if she is coming back in. She goes and Tim follows.
16. Brooke has nightmares the night before she will take out Shane’s stitches. She gets a bit flustered when she sees him in the waiting room. She starts crying the stitches and she asks why he is one of the only guys she sees shackled. He tells her it is because of a grudge Hunt has against him and he doesn’t know why. She catches him looking down her shirt and scolds him. He apologizes and then apologizes for what he said on his last medical visit. They start arguing about what happened and she realized he only apologized to bring it up again. She remembers the note the last nurse left: manipulative. He tells her it must have been Tim that tried to kill her. She tells him to stop and Hunt comes in to check on them. Broke says they are done. Hunt tries to move Shane faster than the shackles will allow and he falls and hits his head on the desk. Dorothy comes in to see what all the commotion is about. She scolds Hint for shackling Shane when it isn’t necessary. She includes Brooke in the scolding, but agrees Shane will need to be in an infirmary bed overnight for observation since he has a bump on his head and a concussion. Hunt helps Brooke get him there and Brooke thinks about when Shane got a head injury playing football. She also remembers how it was proven he had a bump on his head that night and he might not have been lying about being passed out through the entire chain of events. Brooke doesn’t want to think the person that tried to kill her is still out there.
17. Eleven years earlier. After more games and drinking, everyone is coupled off and Shane asks if Brooke is ready to go to his room. As they go upstairs, Brooke has the feeling she is being watched. When she turns around to check, all she sees is Tim and Kayla making out on the couch. They get to his room and the power goes out. He says it will probably come back on in the morning, but isn’t a viral now because everyone is going to sleep. They she says she is nervous because it will be her first time. He says it will be his too. He tells her he loves her and she says it back to him. They have sex.
18. Towards the end of Brooke’s shift, she realizes she left Shane alone for two hours without checking on him. She goes into the infirmary and wakes him up. He can see she was worried about him and points it out. She says it is normal patient worry. He asks about dinner and says he “lopes” tacos. She is surprised he makes the reference. He adjusts his bed and has trouble adjusting the pillow. She helps him and realizes she is close enough for him to kiss her. She is surprised at herself for having those kinds of thought after what she thinks he did to her. He thanks her for her help. As she leaves, she can feel him watching her.
19. As Brooke is walking out to her car, Hunt grabs her arm to stop her. She is scared and threatens to scream. He apologizes for what happened and said he didn’t mean for it to happen, but Shane deserved it. He tells her to be careful with him because he is manipulative. He warns her the previous nurse fell for it. He asks her out to drinks to explain, but she turns him down saying she has to get home to relieve the babysitter. She tells him maybe next month. He tells her to be careful as she gets into her car.
20. Brooke isn’t sleeping well and she thinks part of the reason is that she took the master bedroom that used to be her parents. She think about how her mom kept asking her to have an abortion and telling her she was making a mistake by keeping the baby. Her dad drove the five hours out to queens to beg her to not come back to Raker. He wouldn’t give her a reason, just that it was for her own good. Thinking back on it Brooke realizes her father seemed a bit afraid. (Hinting that the killer is still roaming free).
21. After they have sex, Shane tells Brooke he thinks the condom fell off. She freaks out a bit and he calms her down by saying he isn’t positive and it is unlikely she will get pregnant. He says he will support her no matter what happens. Brooke falls asleep until the screaming starts.
22. Josh is raving about Margie’s meatballs when the doorbell rings. He answers the door and Brooke is concerned when she hears a conversation. She goes to the door and sees Tim. He says his parents sent cookies and he brought them over to share. Josh takes the cookies to go eat them and Tim asks to talk to her outside. Tim asks Josh’s age and if Shane is the father. Brooke tells him the truth. Tim is getting ready to leave when Josh comes out to tell Brooke the sink isn’t working right. She asks Tim if he has the number of a good plumber and he offers to look at him it. Josh brings in the toolbox from the garage and Tim asks him to help. They fix the sink and Josh asks him to fix the broken doorknob upstairs. Brooke is reluctant. Tim says he can come back the next day and they all agree that is fine with them. As Brooke walks Tim out, he says Josh is a good kid.
23. Eleven years earlier. Brooke is woken up from the scream. She shakes Shane awake and they hear a girl scream her name. They get dressed as quickly as they can. Shane tries to convince Brooke to stay in his room, but they rush out of the room together when they hear her name called again. They meet Tim and Kayla in the hall coming out of another room. They rush outside and find Chelsea on the porch and Brandon dead with blood all over his chest. Tim checks for a pulse and determines he is dead. Kayla tries to call the police, but her cell is dead and the landline isn’t working. She goes to get into Chelsea’s car to drive to the police station, but all four tires have been slashed. Shane checks his car and it has the same misfortune. Kayla starts to walk down the gravel road, but falls in her chunky heels. Tim helps her up and back to the house. He suggest they go inside where it is dry. Kayla thinks one of them is a murderer and goes to an upstairs bedroom and slams the door.
24. The next morning at work, Brooke starts heading directly to the infirmary to check on Shane. Hunt calls to her in the hall and gives her the forms she need to request a new mattress for Mr. Carpenter. He tells her Shane is fine, but she needs to be careful around him. She goes to see the nurse that watched Shane overnight and she says he has been fine. Brooke goes to his bedside and wakes him up to an exam to make sure. He says he just has a headache, but she can tell it is worse than he is saying when he flinched at the light she shines in his eyes. She orders him stronger medication. He apologized for bringing up that night and says he won’t do it again. He asks her to stay away from Tim and tells her he is dangerous. Brooke lies and says she will
25. Eleven years earlier. Chelsea asks what they should do with the body. Shane gets a blanket from the linen closet and Chelsea puts it over Brandon. They say their goodbyes and then go in the house. They talk about what they should do next. When walking through the storm is suggested, Shane points out the road is slick and there could be downed power lines. Tim agrees it is too dangerous. Chelsea pulls Brooke outside and has a meltdown. Brook is finally able to get her calm enough to go back inside and gets her on the couch and covered up. Tim tells them Shane is outside looking for a cell signal. Tim pulls Brooke (who is reluctant to leave Chelsea alone) into the kitchen. He points out Brandon was stabbed to death. When he went to the kitchen to get a knife to defend them, he found they were all gone. He thinks the murder was pre-planned.
26. Over the next month, Brooke does not see Shane at work. Tim is over a lot helping fix things with Josh. Margie warns Brooke that he has some questions. Brooke sits with Josh and he asks if Tim is his dad. She tells him he isn’t and then the doorbell rings. Josh goes back to his video games and says he doesn’t want to talk about it. Brooke answers the door and goes to hug Tim as they always do in greeting. She smells his sandalwood aftershave and starts freaking out like the necklace is choking her again. She tells him to wash it off immediately. He goes to the bathroom and when he comes back out, she doesn’t smell it. She explains that was the scent Shane wore that night and the smell of it makes her sick. She thinks there is an electric moment between them.
27. After dinner, Josh asks Tim to throw the ball around with him. Brooke tells him to do his homework instead. He goes to his room and Tim starts cleaning up dinner. Brooke tells him he doesn’t my have to do that and he has done enough around the house to earn a few dinners. They joke about it and Brooke goes to smack his arm, but lets her hand linger. They kiss. Tim says they can forget it happened if she wants but he has been in love with her his entire life. She hears Shane asking her to stay away from Tim because he is dangerous. She ignores Shane’s warning and decides she should be with Tim.
28. Eleven years earlier. In the kitchen, Tim makes his argument for Shame being the killer. Brooke can’t believe Shane would do anything like it especially to his best friend. Tim shows her he found a bat and plans to knock out Shane if he goes after them. When they go back into the living room, Shane is back inside. He couldn’t find a signal. They decide to go upstairs and check in Kayla. When they get to the only closed door upstairs, they knock, but there isn’t an answer. They call out to Kayla, but still don’t get an answer. Shane opens the door and they find her dead inside with her chest covered in blood.
29. An inmate named Fanning comes in with a few broken fingers. Brooke has them x-rayed to make sure the knuckle isn’t broken. She tapes the broken fingers up and tells them they will heel on their own. He says “damn Nelson” under his breath and she wonders if he Shane was the one that broke his fingers
30. Josh is excited about Tim coming over to build a birdhouse with him. They continue to get close even though Josh knows Tim is not his dad. Brooke decides she isn’t ready to let Josh know her and Tim are more than friends yet. Tim brings out his high school year book and promises Brooke that Shane isn’t in it. He shows Josh the portrait pictures of him and Brooke. Brooke is sadden by the “in memoriam” under Brandon’s name. When she gets to the H’s, she is surprised to find Marcus Hunt. She asks Tom about him and he tells her Hunt was the kid Shane beat up bad enough to send to the hospital. (Could Hunt have something to do with the murders that night? Kayla was killed, but it seems like Tim was with someone when it happened. Is this maybe a Scream type of scenario where two guys team up to evade suspicion?)
31. Eleven years earlier. Tim and Shane are pointing fingers at each other. Both think the other person has to be the murderer. Shane points out Tim would have had a chance while the girls were out back and he was searching for a cell phone signal. Tim points out Shane was outside and could have gotten into Kayla’s room a different way. (No one points out how Chelsea was left alone when Tim took Brooke to the kitchen). Chelsea takes Brooke up to Shane’s room and they barricade themselves in. Shane tells them their best chance to survive is to stay together. Tim tells the girls to stay I. The room for their best chance at staying alive. Brooke feels that Tim is right and stays in the room with Chelsea.
32. Brooke asks to speak to Hunt privately and they go into her exam room. She points out he has been overly tough on Shane and she thinks it is because he beat Hunt up in high school. She demands he treat Shane like a person, but he turns the conversation around. He points out she took a job where one of the inmates tried to kill her. She has a son in fifth grade and has a pretty good guess of who the father is. He threatens to get her fired and/or tell Shane about Josh. She begs him not to tell Shane about Josh. When he asks her out again, she says she has a boyfriend and Hunt says he knows Tim is at her house most nights because he drove by. He says she needs to be nicer to him and she should be the one getting him coffee in the morning.
33. On her way in to work everyday, Brooke tries to get the security guard ti smile. She makes a joke and thinks she almost sees it happening. When she gets down to the medical ward, Dorothy asks to talk in her office. She scolds Brooke because a mattress has arrived for Mr. Carpenter. Brooke points out how he needs the pressure relief mattress for his ulcer to be able to repair itself. She promises she will be advocating for her patients and threatens to tell local media about it if Dorothy tries to deny them basic care. She also demands lidocaine be kept in stock or she will refuse to stitch anyone. She will have them sent to the ER and the prison will have to pay for the transportation costs.
34. For Brooke’s birthday, Tim plans to take her out to a nice, adult dinner while Margie stays with Josh. Brooke wears a black dress and Josh is surprised when he sees her. He asks if Tim is her boyfriend and she tells him he is. He is okay with it. When Tim arrives, he has a present for Brooke. As she opens it, he tells her he found it at a flea market. It is a gold necklace with a snowflake charm like the one he gave her for her 10th birthday. When she asks him about it, he says he forgot it was what was used to try to kill her. She licks herself in the bathroom for a few minutes trying to get herself together. She convinces herself Tim must have forgotten and wasn’t trying to upset her. When he knocks in the door to check in her, she opens it and goes into his open arms.
35. Eleven years earlier. After Brooke hears both boys walk away from the door, she sits in the bed and cries. She realizes either her boyfriend or her longest friend might be a murderer. Chelsea is searching for a weapon. Brooke asks her who she thinks did it and Chelsea immediately says Tim. She points out how he dated the murdered girl from the other town and he spent most of the night with Kayla. She also points out that Tim is in love with Brooke. After a few minutes of denial, she starts thinking it over. Brooke realizes Tim is in love with her.
36. In the way home from dinner, Tim asks Brooke how her birthday ranks against her other birthdays. She puts it in her top ten, which disappoints him. He tells her he found a lead for a new job for her much closer to home. She tells him she has a contract with the prison for a year. He gets upset about her working at the prison Shane is at. She mentions she isn’t positive about what happened that night and he pulls over. He is insistent that Shane stabbed him in the stomach and said he was going after me next. Brooke still isn’t sure. The rest of the drive home is in silence. Brooke goes inside and Josh is already in bed. Margie asks about her date and tells Brooke to out the necklace in her jewelry box. After Margie leaves, Brook open up the box and takes out the necklace. It has a stone missing in the exact same place as her necklace from high school. She wonders if it is the same necklace and how Tim actually got it. She doesn’t remember there being any local flea markets around town. She tries to stop herself from suspecting Tim, but she wonders where he really got the necklace.
37. Brooke and Tim make up quickly. After being together for around two months, they have a routine and are cleaning up the kitchen after dinner. He tells her he loves her and she says it back knowing it will crush him if she doesn’t. Brooke hears Josh yelling at the TV and goes to the living room to send him to his room to do his homework. Tim backs her up and tells him to listen to his mom. He shuts off the video game and the TV turns to the news. There is a report that Kelli, the waitress from the bar they went to together, is missing. When Brooke recognizes her, she asks Tim about it. He says they just got a drink after one of their shifts and that was it. He excuses himself and goes home. Brooke looks up Kelli and finds a social media post where she posts that assistant principals are good kissers. So Brooke knows he is lying about the date but thinks that might be reasonable.
38. Eleven years earlier. Chelsea searches Shane’s room for a knife. She becomes more certain that Tim is the killer as she talks about it. Brooke starts thinking about how Chelsea was alone and had the chance ti kill each person. Suddenly, Brooke is positive it is Chelsea and tries to get out of the room. Chelsea tries to stop her. Brooke kicks Chelsea in the shin and squeezes out through the gap in the barricaded door. She calls down the stairs, but no one answers. She makes her way down, but stumbles over a body at the bottom. She hears Chelsea calling for her in muffled screams, but Brooke can’t move. Suddenly, someone is on top of her and choking her with her necklace
39. Brooke and Hunt are still on icy terms, but when Shane is cuffed while in her waiting area after he has clearly been beaten up, she asks him about it. Hint says it was required because Shane was fighting. Brooke notices there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with Shanes hands/knuckles, so she doesn’t think he fought back. She takes him into the exam room and closes the door. He tells her he has a broken rib. She tells him he might need ti stand up for himself and accidentally lets slip her son is in fifth grade. He asks how old Josh is and if he is his. Brooke answers honestly and he asks to see a picture. She shows him several from her phone until Hunt knocks in the door. Shane says he had gotten used to all the things he had to live without for the rest of his life, but this made it worse. He refuses any x-rays or treatment and leaves. Brooke tries to remember something she is missing from the night everything happened, but it alludes her.
40. Eleven years earlier. The necklace is cutting off Brooke’s air supply. She thinks Tim is going to kill her until she smells Shane’s aftershave coming from the person strangling her. The necklace snaps and she uses the opportunity to thrust her elbow into the guy’s testicles. She rolls out from under him and runs outside and down the road. She hears someone calling for her behind her, but she keeps running. She comes to a set of headlights and approaches a pickup truck. She sees a big bearded man inside. She asks for help and then collapses.
41. Chelsea was killed sometime between Brook leaving the room and the police showing up. Tim said Shane stabbed and said he was going after Brooke, so he hit him in the head with a baseball bat. Shane said Tim hit him with the bat and he was unconscious until the cops showed up. Brookes story seems to go along better with Tim’s. Brooke ends up getting the job at the private practitioners’ office. They apologize for not hiring her when she sent her resume earlier. A disgruntled patient had called to complain about her (was that Tim trying to make sure HE got her a job?). She gives her notice at the prison. Dorthy tries to give her a hard time until Brooke points out she hasn’t seen or met the supervising physician the entire time she has been there. Tim invites her over for dinner to celebrate her new job offer. Brooke sits in the couch and Tim goes to check on his cooking. Brook feels a lump in the couch and reaches behind her to find a scarf stuffed in the cushions. When Tim comes into the room, she asks him about it. He says it must be his moms and then says he has something serious to ask her. She clearly isn’t ready to take the next step in their relationship and he decides to wait. He sends her to the basement to retrieve a bottle of wine while he checks on their dinner again. Brooke grabs a bottle of Merlot from the wine shelf and turns to go back upstairs when she notices a large gray tarp in the corner. She goes to investigate and finds the legs and feet of a woman in high heeled shoes. She drops the bottle in shock and rushes up the stairs. The door is locked.
42. Tim opens the door and apologizes for it sticking. Brooke tells him she doesn’t feel well and has to leave. He tries to understand why. When she gets to the door, there are police lights flashing outside. When Tim opens the door, Brooke tells the officers about the body in the basement. They said they come there because of an anonymous tip that Tim had killed Kelli (I’m guessing Marcus Hunt is behind this). One officer stays with them and the other checks the basement. When he comes back up, they arrest Tim for Kelli’s murder. Brooke realizes she got it wrong and Shane really is innocent. She decides she has to make it right.
43. Brooke goes home and Margie asks if everything is okay because she heard the sirens. Brook says she is fine and that they will see her on Monday. After Margie is gone, Josh asks where Tim is because they were supposed to play video games together. Brooke tells him the police took Tim away because he hurt someone. They cry together.
44. Two months later, Brooke no longer works at the Raker Penitentiary, but she has gone several times since starting her new job to visit Shane. She recanted her testimony from the original trial and admitted it was an honest mistake. Now she is picking up Shane after his release. He will have a difficult time getting in his feet after 10 years in prison so he’ll be staying with Brooke. She gives him a prepaid cell phone and takes him out for fast food. He is excited about meeting Josh. They agree to tell Josh that Shane is a friend and they will tell him the truth when the time is right.
45. When they get to the house, Shane takes a long shower alone for the first time in 10 years. When he gets out, he is nervous about meeting Josh. Brooke tries to reassure him. When Josh comes home, Brooke introduces him to Shane, but Josh ignores him saying he is hungry. Shane recommends crackers with peanut butter on them as a snack. Josh agrees to it and goes to play video games. Brooke apologizes to Shane for Josh being rude, but Shane thinks Josh is a lot like him at that age. Brooke remembers the Shane having a wild reputation and doesn’t think they are much alike. She sends Shane to play with him while she finishes the snack.
46. Brooke gets a call from an unknown number. When everything originally happened, she had to get a new phone number and email because so many people were calling to buy her story. Things have calmed down since, so she answers. Tim’s mom begs her not to hang up and to hear her out. She believes Tim is innocent and wants Brooke to talk to him. When Shane comes into the room and hears Brooke’s end of the conversation and whine he is talking to, he helps her out by taking the phone and telling her not to contact Brooke ever again. Brooke points out Shane’s mom made a very similar call a decade earlier. Shane thinks Mrs. Reese will say anything to get her son acquitted. Even if Brooke didn’t testify against Tim, I wouldn’t be enough for him to go free.
47. They order pizza and have dinner as a family. Afterwards, Josh goes to do his homework and get ready for bed. Shane asks a few questions about what Josh is like and thanks Brooke for raising their son to be a great kid. Brooke goes to make up the spare room (why didn’t she do that before? It’s not like she didn’t know he was going to be staying with her), but Shane insists he can put the sheets and blanket on the bed. He tells her his mother left him the farmhouse when she died, so he’ll move back home once he gets it ready. Brooke goes to say Goodnight to Josh. He asks how long Shane will be staying with them and Brooke says a couple of days. Josh doesn’t seem happy about it. Brooke goes back to the spare room and shows Shane where she put some of Tim’s clothes for him to wear. He is not happy about it, but he knows he doesn’t have many options. Brooke assured him she will get him new clothes. The way he looks at her leads her to tell her he won’t have any trouble finding a woman to be with. He tells her he doesn’t want to be with just anyone, he wants someone that means something to him, like the mother of his son. They kiss.
48. They end up having sex. After Shane is asleep, Brooke goes to her own room. She has nightmares about the night at the farmhouse and wakes up to the sound of an engine outside her house. She looks outside and sees her garage door is still closed, but there are tire tracks in the snow leading up to it. She checks in Shane and can hear him breathing through the door. She goes back to bed. The next morning, she goes downstairs to find Shane making pancakes from scratch. He asks her to take him out to the farmhouse so he can clean it up and assess how much work needs to be done. She refuses at first reminding him how traumatic it was for her. He begs her to just drop him off and she agrees.
49. Josh ends up loving the pancakes. Shane tells him they are going to go look at his house and asks if he wants to come. Brooke is against it, but Josh insists on going. Shane shovels the drive way while Brooke packs up cleaning supplies. When she goes to put them in the trunk of her car, she notices her keys are on the wrong shelf. She thinks it is odd, but thinks if she were going to be spacey and misplace her keys, yesterday’s excitement could be the cause. She wishes she had checked the car in the middle of the night. They drive out and on the backroads Brooke slides a bit in the ice and snow. When they get to the house, it is in bad shape and Shane’s old Chevy is still out front. The roof has held up, but some of the wood is rotting. Shane asks Josh if he wants to go in and they both jump out of the car to check out the house. Brooke reluctantly follows. When they go inside, the house is dirty and freezing. Brooke realizes Shane will definitely need her help to make any progress.
50. The spend time cleaning as a family. After a while, Shane takes Josh out to walk through the woods. He promised to protect Josh with his life and reminds Brooke they have cell phones if they need each other. Brook sits on a chair and starts to look up Tim on the internet before realizing she is giving him too much of her time. She deletes him from her search and sees a breaking news article that a local prison guard was murdered. She is able to load the picture enough to see it is Hunt. She goes to the stairs and starts to remember more about the night of the massacre. She does believe it was Shane’s body on top of hers, not Tim’s. But she remembers Chelsea screaming from behind the closed door. She thinks Tim killed Chelsea while Shane strangled her. She thinks they did it together (Scream? I think this might just be her panic talking. I’m thinking it is Hunt still. She didn’t wait for the picture to finally load and she is not thinking clearly).
51. Brooke calls Shane and asks him to bring him back so he doesn’t get sick from the cold. Shane refuses. He says he is going to make her pay for what she did to him and she will know what it is like to not have her son. He hangs up and she tries to call the police, but she doesn’t have any service. She tries to go after Shane and Josh, but slips and sprains her ankle. She starts down the road and Margie pulls up. Brooke begs her for help, but Margie thinks Josh is fine with his father. She admits Margie isn’t her real name. She tells Brooke she will take her to Josh if she can recognize her. Fake Margie pulls out a gun and points it at Brooke.
52. Mrs. Nelson explains how she had an affair with Brooke’s dad when Shane was five years old. He was supposed to leave Brooke and her mom to be with them, but decided to stay. That was the real reason her parents didn’t want her to date Shane and why they kept her pregnancy a secret. She planned the massacre with him. The other teenagers were just fodder to them. Brooke was their target because she got the life they were supposed to have. They started with the girl Tim was dating. It was Mrs. Nelson that was killing the teenagers. Shane was strangling Brooke while his mom was killing Chelsea. She found out a year ago that she had a grandson. She killed Brooke’s parents to get her back to Raker. She used the key Tim gave her to put Kelli’s body in his basement. Brooke begs her to let them all be a family together, but Mrs. Nelson is convinced they can’t do that with Brooke alive. There is a sound in the woods that distracts the older woman and Brook takes the opportunity to lunge for the hand that has the gun pointed at her.
53. The gun goes off but misses Brooke. There is a struggle between the two women and Brooke ends up shooting Mrs. Nelson. She feels sick, but knows it was self defense. Josh comes running out of the woods saying Shane was hurt and she needs to help him. She keeps her hand on the gun in her pocket as she follows Josh. She thinks it may be a trap. When they get to Shane, she sees the snow and icicles from a tree have fallen on him: ther e is blood on his face and in the snow. His eyes are open, but he’s not moving at all. She is so glad Josh doesn’t know what is really going on.
54. Pamela Nelson lives through the gunshot wound in her chest and admits to everything including framing Tim. She made sure Brooke would be turned down for every job except the prison. The previous nurse was cleared of the drug allegations against her. It is a while before Tim is cleared and released from prison. Josh runs into him at the mailbox on the corner, but they only say hi to each other before going their separate ways. Brooke goes over to his house and his mom opens the door. She asks to talk with Tim and she goes to get him. She apologizes to Tim for getting it all wrong and not trusting him. She asks that he spend just a bit of time with Josh even though she is pretty sure Tim hates her. He admits he is mad, but he doesn’t hate her. She tells him about a broken draw string in her closet that Josh wants to fix with him and he agrees to come over later in the week. She sees him smile a bit as he closes the front door.
EPILOGUE
A while later, Josh is happy that Tim is back in their lives. He hopes he and his mom will be happy together. He thinks back in a time when he and Tim were alone. Tim told him a man named Shane Nelson might come around looking for him one day and want to hurt his mom. While they were building a snow man, he heard how Shane talked to her over the phone. He shook the branches to make the snow fall in Shane. When he saw that he was still conscious, Josh took a large icicle and beat him to death with it. He did what he had to do to keep his mom safe.
