Dragon Realm 1
Katie & Kevin Tsang
1. A man watches a large mountain and waits. The creature in the mountain is waiting for someone and decides he can wait a bit longer as he goes back to sleep.
2. California surfer boy Billy Chan arrives at a train station in the middle of nowhere China. He wanted to stay home and surf with his friends all summer, but his parents are sending him to a camp to learn Mandarin. He makes it inside the station and finds a group of children that are also there for the camp. The camp owner’s grandson, JJ, checks them all in and seems annoyed to be there. Their new teacher arrives and introduces himself as Old Gold. They all pile into a van and Billy sits next to an Irish boy named Dylan. They go up the mountain and back down at speeds fast enough o make them nervous until they arrive at Camp Dragon.
3. As the kids’ luggage is unloaded from the van, Billy and his new friend can hear screaming in the woods. JJ tells them it is just monkeys and they will get used to it after a while. Billy and Dylan introduce themselves. They all gather around Old Gold and he tells them they were all selected for the inagriul year of the camp for specific reasons. The southern blonde girl, Charlotte, points out there are only 11 kids present. Just then, a girl named Ling-Fei comes out to join them and apologizes for being late. Old Gold takes off his necklace and tosses each kid a bead from it. He tells them to close their eyes and really concentrate in what they want out of camp that summer. Billy thinks it is just a lame exercise at first, but when everyone else around him does it, he decides to do it to. He decides he wants an adventure and the bead seems to give off an odd energy. Old Gold collects the beads and sorts them into groups. Billy, Dylan, Charlotte, and Ling-Fei are in one group. They go to the dinning hall to eat and then find their cabins. Billy is sharing a cabin with Dylan while Charlotte and Ling-Fei are in the cabin next to theirs. Billy is homesick, though he’s never admit he misses his parents.
4. That night, the campers gather around a fire. Billy is surprised by the number of stars and shooting stars they can see in the sky. Old Gold tells them the stars can be seen most nights there aren’t storms. He points out one particularly bright star and tells them it is called the Dragon heart. He tells them there was a battle on the mountain amongst the dragons that used to live there. The battle was so blurry, rivers of dragon blood were said to have flowed down the mountain. When the battle was over, the stars plucked the heart from a dead dragon and put it in the sky as a reminder that even the great and powerful can die. Old Gold tells them there haven’t been dragons on the mountain since and no humans know what happens to them every or how the battle ended. Billy is fascinated by the story. Dylan is skeptical. The rest of the campers find it interesting. Old Gold goes off to bed and tells them to do the same. Billy stairs at his cowling and has trouble falling asleep. He is excited that he doesn’t know what the summer is going to be like.
5. The first official day of camp is rainy. Billy wakes up Dylan for breakfast and they make their way to the canteen through the rain. Most of the campers seem disappointed about the rain. Old Gold comes in to tell them he is changing their schedule due to the weather. They start with their Mandarin lesson. Next, they have a cooking class. Last, they have a Kung Fu lesson and Billy is happy to learn it comes pretty natural to him. Charlotte gets her Jujitsu moves mixed up with the Kung Fu ones they are learning. That night, a loud clap of thunder wakes up Billy. He realizes he has to go to the bathroom so he makes his way out in the rain to the bathroom. On his way back, there is more lightning and he jumps under the nearest cabin awning for shelter. He sees lightning coming from inside the cabin; a silver orb with blue lightning coming out if it. He doesn’t know what he is seeing, but he knows it is strange. He goes back to his own cabin.
6. The next morning, the weather. Is nice and everyone is in a better mood. After breakfast, Old Gold has them gather around his tree stump and announces he has a camp challenge for them. Each team will be given an envelope with a riddle for them to solve. They each need to bring back the item from their riddle. It is a race and the team back first will get first pick for the rest of their stay at camp. He tells Billy’s group they will have a more difficult riddle since they have the advantage of having Ling-Fei on their team. He throws a ball in the air that explodes into confetti and tells them to start. As soon as Charlotte Roos open the envelope and reads it, the team starts squabbling over the riddle. Billy thinks it could be a Lion-fish, but Dylan points out they are dangerous. Ling-Fei figures out it is a dragon fruit and starts leading them to where they can find one. She tells Billy there is a shortcut they could take through the bamboo field. But it is technically off limits. They decide as a group to go through it anyway. They notice it is rather quiet for an area that usually has a lot of monkeys. The come to Monkey Pavilion on the other side, but it is not a monkey that is at the Pavilion.
7. There is a tiger in the Pavilion and the four children stop. They stay still and whisper to each other about what to do. Most of them agree that running would be a bad idea. Dylan panics despite everyone’s attempts to keep him calm and he runs. The tiger chases him and the other three run after them. When they catch up, Dylan is backed against a stone wall and they go to him. The tiger is on a boulder and waits for them to all be together. They join hands and form a chain. Billy isn’t afraid anymore. The tiger leaps at them and he closes his eyes
8. The tiger never comes. It disappears into the mountain. They are all so relieved, they slump down against the mountain side still holding hands. Just as they think they are in the clear, the ground begins to shake and rocks start to fall down the mountain. Billy keeps hold of hands and starts leading them away from things that could fall on them. Even being fromCalifornia, he has never seen the ground move like it did in this earthquake. King-Fei wants to go back to camp to check on Old Gold and Billy agrees. Charlotte still wants to get the fruit, but the others decide they are lucky to be going back unharmed and with their lives.
9. When they get back to camp, the other groups have already arrived and have their item: bamboo. Billy wonders why no one else looks like they have any concerns. When Old Gold asks why they are dirty and ragged, Billy tells them there was an earthquake. Old Gold and everyone else thinks he is lying because they didn’t experience an y. Charlotte pipes in to tell him they also ran into a tiger at Monkey Pavillion. JJ laughs at her saying there aren’t tigers in the area. Old Gold scolds Ling-Fei for taking them out of bounds. He is upset with all of them for lying. Dylan says he saw something and they followed it and got lost. Later in the canteen, the four new friends sit together glad that they experienced their adventure together or else they might not have believed it themselves. Ling-Fei notices her necklace is missing and is upset because it is a family heirloom. They all agree to go back into the forest early in the morning to look for it together. Dylan is hesitant at first, but he doesn’t want the others to go on an adventure without him.
10. The group of four friends go back into the forest to look for the necklace the next morning. They start at the Pavillion where there are actually monkeys this time. The watch the ground for the necklace as they make their way over to the mountain. The mountain itself has a split in it and there are rocks that had fallen all around. Billy feels like they are being watched and suggests they leave. Ling-Fei agrees thinking her necklace was probably carried off by a monkey. Charlotte and Dylan start looking under large rocks for the necklace. Billy still feels like they are being watched and turns around to find Ling-Fei is gone.
11. When Billy tells the others that Ling-Fei is gone, they turn to look at him. They try to reason where she could have gone. Suddenly Dylan is gone as well. They hear him yell and it sounds like it is coming from inside the mountain. Something super fast comes and takes Charlotte into an opening in the mountain as well. Billy is hesitant, but he decides he cannot leave his friends behind. He walks into the opening.
12. Billy makes his way down the cave tunnel until he comes to a dead end. He knows his friends went down this exact tunnel. He goes to kick the wall, but his foot goes through it like mist. He reaches into the wall and his hands go right through. He steps through the mist and finds his friends in a defensive triangle being circled by a silver dragon. It stops to look at him and wraps itself around him tight enough to almost make him pass out. A green dragon enters the cavern and then a blue one as well. Charlotte throws a rock at the silver dragon and it lets go of Billy. She is able to get out of the center and to Billy. She says they need to get out of there and get help, but neither of them know where they came in from. A fourth red and gold dragon appears.
13. The red dragon breathes fire towards Billy and Charlotte until they run back to their other friends. It them surrounds them with a ring of fire. The blue dragon turns the flames into a wall of ice. The four friends decide they don’t have many options and their best chance is to try communicating with the dragons. Dylan asks them not to eat them. When they respond that the humans aren’t what they expected, Billy is surprised they can talk. They tell the children that dragons are superior to humans in every way. Ling-Fei demands the silver one return her necklace. The silver dragon plucks the jade stone from the necklace and puts the chain around her neck. She demands it back, but the dragon ignores her. Billy realizes the dragons are keeping them alive because the dragons need them. He asks theme what they want and why they are keeping them there.
14. The dragons explain there are two realms: the human realm and the dragon realm. The mountain is one of the last places to go between the realms. Dragons would come into the human world because they could become more powerful by bonding with a human. There was an evil dragon called the Dragon of Death. She wanted to take over both realms and war ensued. These four dragons were able to create a time portal and send her back in time to before humans or dragons existed, it she put a curse on them as they did this. The four dragons would be trapped in the mountain until four humans with hearts that matched their own came to them. So it was the children that opened the mountain. They put them through a series of tests to check their bravery and loyalty. Billy asks if they had anything to do with the disappearing tiger, but they don’t know anything about it. Now the Dragon of Desth is returning more powerful than before, and the dragons need the humans’ help to stop her.
15. The dragons explain that the blue dragon has seen seen the future and shows the destruction of the human and dragon worlds that will happen if they don’t stop the Dragon of Death. Billy knows he will do anything to protect his family from being hurt, but is still wondering if he is up for this much of an adventure that includes war. Dylan says he would rather sleep through the upcoming war, but once the others agree to take on the dragon bond to help fight, he too agrees to it. The dragons explain that every dragon has their own horde and it will help the humans understand their personality better. The silver dragon shows off her jewels and gemstones first. Next the green dragon shows them his collection of human-made objects, mostly buttons. They move onto the red dragon’s hordes gold. Lastly, the blue dragon leads them deep into the carvers and uses her wing as an umbrella to allow them behind a waterfall. Her horde is a pool of living sea shells and creature. Billy offers her his lucky sea she’ll and tells her it is from California where he is from. She takes it and is grateful to have a piece of his homeland. Billy asks if she is the dragon that matches his heart and she confirms it. The others want to know who they are matched with and the red dragon suggests they go back to the main cavern to continue forming their bonds.
16. The dragons explain that the bond will make them feel whole when they are together, but like something is missing when they are apart. It will last the rest of their lives. The human children agree to it. The dragons further explain that they are given a new name by each human they bond with. When the human dies, the name does as well. Charlotte names the red dragon Tank. She crawls on his head and when he lifts her up, she jumps off to prove her bravery. Tank catches her and puts her back in the ground. Ling-Fei names the silver dragon Xing (Chinese for “star”). Dylan names the green dragon Buttons and he is very pleased with it. Lastly, Billy names the blue dragon Spark. Each dragon grows larger and stronger physically as they are bonded. Tank says it is just the start.
17. The dragons tell them their mission is dangerous and they can’t guarantee everyone will survive. However, the humans, like the dragons, become stronger with their bond as well. There are also eight pearls that can give them powers. Xing shows off the jade pearl. Buttons says he has the granite on to give to Dylan and Rank has the gold one for Charlotte. Spark says she used to have the lightning pearl, but it was lost in the battle against the Dragon of Death. She says she could sense it in the human world when the mountain opened. Billy remembers seeing the flashing light during the storm and tells them he thinks he knows where it is. Ling-Fei says the cabin where he saw it is Old Gold’s cabin. They decide they will go get the pearl and come back to the mountain. Tank says they need to unlock their powers before they go.
18. Tank puts the three pearls on necklaces and the dragons give them to their respective humans. Long-Fei can hear the fish in a nearby pond and where the sun is. They think she has an affinity for nature. Charlotte becomes stronger and is able to lift a large boulder. Dylan doesn’t feel any different. He thinks the pearl may be wasted on him? But the others tell him to wait and it will eventually show. They tell Billy he needs to go with his friends and retrieve the fourth pearl. They cannot go into the dragon realm without all of them and he will need the pearl there. He promises not to let them down.
19. They four kids make their way back to camp and start to feel the weight of their new quest really hit them as they come back to reality. They decide the first thing they need to do is go to the canteen to eat. They see most of the other kids still playing around camp as they enter the mostly empty canteen. After grabbing some food and sitting down, Old Gold and JJ come up to ask them where they have been. JJ said he had been looking for them and couldn’t find them all morning. Dylan reminds him how they were all in their cabins studying Chinese because they wanted to make up for their poor performance in the scavenger hunt. JJ seems to remember seeing that. Dylan tells Old Gold he should leave his office door unlocked that night because they trust everyone at the camp. Old Gold leads JJ away to help him with his filings. Dylan says he has found out he has the power of persuasion. Ling-Feinthinks it makes sense since he was already such a good story teller. They hope it also works on dragons. Charlotte warns him not to use it on her.
20. The four friends decide they need to leave a note for Old Gold to let him know they are going on an adventure and will be back. They decide to also leave notes for their parents in case they don’t come back. Billy has trouble of thinking what to write. He thinks of Spark waiting for him in the cave and inspiration comes to him. They go about the rest of the day as normal and even get some sleep before meeting back up at midnight. They get to Old Gold’s office and find the door is unlocked. They go inside, but have trouble locating the lightning pearl. Ling-Fei finds some devination bones and decides to take one to show the dragons. Dylan points out that Ling-Fei can sense living things, but bones are dead. They wonder if she can also sense magic. She concentrates and points to the top of the bookshelf. Billy climbs it like a ladder and finds the pearl on top of it. He grabs it and does a backflip off the bookshelf. He thinks he has found his power already.
21. Billy and his friends return to the cave and show the dragons the lightning pearl they were able to acquire. Billy and Dylan tell them about finding out what their powers are. Ling-Fei shows Xing the bone. Xing tells them in tells about the return of the dragons, but she doesn’t think Old Gold would have been able to actually read it. Xing takes the kids down to her horde to make sure they are properly clothed before going into the dragon realm. She pulls out a trunk and shows them the fabric their suits will be made out of. She calls for Sparks help and the two dragons fit the four children in the colors of their respective dragons.
22. The dragons insist that the children sleep before they enter the dragon realm. They all lay down and buttons sings them to sleep. When they wake up, the dragons feed them fish. They all go to the entrance of the dragon realm together. The gateway seems to be made of purple fog. Xing pulls off one of her scales and tosses it near the gate. A bolt of lightning zaps it into nothings. The dragons tell the kids they need to go through by themselves and open the gate from the other side like they did for the mountain. The kids go through. On the other side, they meet a purple tiger, Victor, who is the same tiger that chased them to the mountain. He tells them he is the keeper of the curse and will not let them open the gate. Dylan tries to use his powers of persuasion to get Victor to do what they want, but it doesn’t work. Billy starts to dart around the cavern to keep the tiger distracted and shooting lightning bolts at him. Ling-Fei tells the others the tiger’s power is its heart. Charlotte rushes up to the distracted tiger and pulls out its heart. The heart disappears in her hand.
23. With the curse broken, the dragons are able to cross over the foggy barrier and into the dragon realm. The cavern opens up to let them out. The land they look over seems to have been destroyed with only peach trees surviving. Dylan picks a peach from a nearby tree. Charlotte thinks it looks like a normal peach, but Dylan wonders if the peaches are different enough in the dragon realm that they could be dangerous. Button tells them the peaches are normal, but every so often, one grows that could grant immortality. There is no way to tell the difference in peaches though. Dylan starts eating them, but they have to get going, so he packs a few in his bag. They get on their dragons’ backs and take to the skies. They fly to the mountain where the dragons had previous met with their allies, but they on it find a pile of bones. They take a few minutes to mourn the loss of the friends. Xing senses a dark power to their north. They all fly up high enough to see a dome of dark magic with plumes of smoke coming too from it. It gives Billy a bad feeling, but it is where they decide they need to go.
24. The group makes their way to a mountain closer to the red dome. They can see there is different plant life around it, but it isn’t like anything the dragons have seen in their realm before. They decide their best advantage is a sneak attack, but they need more information first. Dimitirus approaches, but quickly reveals he has joined the Drsgon of Death, which he calls the Great One. She has promised him power and the army of noxious has grown. He pulls down a star into his paw and willows not. Buttons puts up a shield at Dimitri’s spits fire at them. He has Dylan concentrate on their bond to strengthen it. Xing takes a hit, but insists she is fine. Spark tells them all to close their eyes. They do and she gives off a bright light to blind the enemy and get away. They get up into the air, but they know Dimitrius and the other Nox wings will follow.
25. They don’t get very far before Xing and Ling-Fei are hit by one of the box-wing’s attacks. They keep moving, but Xing knows she Kenny be able to stay in the air much longer. She has the others follow her towards the lake below and lifts all the later out of it. They fly through it quickly and end up below the water. When Dimitri’s and the noxwings follow, Xing tells Spark she needs to hold them. Billy tells Spark she needs to freeze the water. Spark does and Billy helps with his bond. Buttons heals Xing and along-Fei. Dimitrius hurls a purple ball of fire at them and it breaks through the ice.
26. The dragons have their bonded humans help them fire at Dimitrius. But the evil dragon laughs at their attempts. He fires back and they are all thrown to the ground with the kids falling off their dragons. He throws an electric net over them and Spark uses her wing to protect the children. She uses her telepathic link with Billy to tell him the kids need to escape and find a way to stop the Noxious. She says their instincts will guide them. She makes a platform of ice and Billy tells them all to get on. When they do, she uses more ice to secure them and sends them off flying away from the dragons. On of the Nox-wings points this out to Dimitrius, but he isnmt too concerned about the humans and says they will hunt them down later knowing they can’t get too far. Charlotte is furious Billy made the decision to abandon their dragons by himself. He tries to explain it is what Spark told him to do, but she is still mad. The others try to stay positive that they will be able to help their dragons still.
27. The kids land on the other side of the lake and the ice platform melts into water. Charlotte wants them to go to the red dome to save their dragons, but the others aren’t convinced that is the best course of action. Billy tries to warn her as a giant crab comes for her, but she gets upset that he is interrupting her. Billy tries to push her out of the way, but the crab grabs Charlotte’s ankle and heads back to the water. The others try to pull the crab back to shore, but it is no use and the crab disappears with Charlotte.
28. Dylan and Ling-Fei try to get Billy out of the water, but he can’t believe Charlotte is really gone. Something starts to bubble up to the surface and it’s Charlotte carrying one of the crabs eyes with her. They help her to shore and she throws up the water she swallowed, which also makes Dylan throw up. They decide they need to find some sort of shelter for the night from any other creatures as well as the giant raindrops that start to fall. They walk through the dead forest without encountering anything and find an empty cave at the base of the mountain range. Ling-Fei cannot sense anything inside it, so they go in. Dylan asks if they wish they could go back to their own world, but none of them want to abandon their dragons. They decide they will make to the red dome in the morning and come up with a plan when they have more information. Dylan shares the peaches he put in his bag earlier. Billy decides to take the first watch and the others go towards the back of the cave and go to sleep. Billy can nearly feel his connection to Spark and is worried.
29. When they wake up in the morning, Ling-Fei has them all thank the cave they stayed in for protecting them overnight. She puts her ear to the ground and says there is a river that runs through the mountain range they can follow to the red dome. They find the river and walk for a long time before they stop for lunch. A river pup jumps out of the river and approaches them. Ling-Fei senses it doesnmt intend to hurt them. She pets it and then in chases Dylan until he gives it one of his pork buns. It jumps up into his arms and starts to nuzzle his chest. Billy realizes the river pup is going for Dylan’s pearl too late. It snaps the chain of the necklace and takes off into the river. Charlotte throws Billy after him and he swims as fast as he can after it. It leads him into a cave and he follows. There is a pile of things stacked inside. Billy grabs the pearl and hears a scratching sound. Bye turns around and screams.
30. A large rock troll enters the cave. It points at the pearl in Billy’s hand and tells it belongs to it. Billy drops it. The others enter the cave and find the rock troll. They try to talk it into giving them the pearl and Bully back, but it thinks both are part of his horde. Ling-Fei suggests a trade. They try to give the rock troll their last three pork buns, but it isn’t interested. Billy offers the troll one of his teeth in exchange for his freedom. The troll agrees and Billy opens up his mouth so the troll can take a bottom front tooth. The troll accidentally takes two. Billy asks if they can have the pearl for the second one and it agrees. They get out of the cave as quick as they can.
31. They continue walking along the river until the sun starts to set. They kids decide they need to find a place to stay for the night. Ling-Fei lays on the ground and points to an empty cave high up a mountainside. Billy climbs up and then has Charlotte throw the other two up to Billy. When she asks how she is supposed to get up, Billy tells her to see how high her super strength will let her jump. She jumps as hard as she can and the others are able to pull her into the cave. They get some sleep, but Billy is woken up in the night when the mountain starts to move. Ling- Fei explains she asked the mountain for help and now it is moving. When the mountain stops, they are near the red dome. They thank the cave before leaving it and heading into the tall grass and trees. Billy picks up something that looks like an eggplant. When he knocks on it, it splits open and beetles start to crawl all over him. Charlotte and Dylan try to get the insects off him. Ling-Fei tries to warn him to stay away from the needles on the bushes, but Billy falls into one and passes out in the tall grass.
32. Billy wakes up a few minutes later and they are all relieved the effects of the needles Donny last very long. They decide to gather as many needles as they can and take them into the dime with them. They find a small tunnel and make their way under the dome and wall. When they pop out in the other side, there is a dragon that finds them. They try to use the needles againt it, but its scales are like armor. Billy ends up using the needles inside the dragon’s mouth and it passes out. They get their first look at what is inside the dome and find it filled with dragons in cages.
33. They rush over to their dragons while the box-wings are focused on the portal that has already been opened. Spark tells Billy he needs to get ride of the dragon hearts that are fueling the portal and dragon cages. She makes him a board out of ice and says he can fly it with their bond. Billy dodges dragon attacks and starts taking out the hearts. When their dragons are free, the others help. Dimitrius catches Billy and almost crushes him into the ground. Spark is able to stop him, but Billy is still hurt and needs Buttons to heal him. When Dylan goes to help Billy up, Old Gold appears out of no where and grabs Dylan. He rushes to the portal. He reveals he is a supporter of the Dragon of Death. He has a vial of her blood to allow him through the portal. He jumps through with Dylan and it closes.
34. With the portal closed, the good dragons are freed and the land starts to return to its original state. Dimitrius swears they will succeed and flys away with the other nox-wings. Billy is heartbroken over Dylan being gone. Spark promises they will get him back. King-Fei is in shock over the man she knew her entire life being the bad guy. JJ reveals himself. He says Old Gold changed completely. He became obsessed with dragons and brought JJ to the mountain saying he might need his heart. He used magic to get them into the dragon realm and then just abandoned JJ when he went through the portal. Another dragon approaches them to thank the children for freeing them. They intend to continue the fight against the nox-wings. Buttons can still feel Dylan, but it is painful meaning the bond is still in tact. They decide they will have to find a way to travel through time to find Dylan and defeat the Dragon of Death.
