I can't say that I really enjoyed this book all that much. It seemed to drag on with the same plot as the second book, Stargazer. Really, it just seemed like a waste of time. The characters don't really seem to grow at all either.
The ending was just awful. Maybe that's because I was really hoping that this story would be over after the third one. But it really seems like it could have been wrapped up by now. By turning Bianca into a ghost (wraith, whatever), there is more plot possibilities. However, it seems like it will take a lot more bad books to get down to it.
I don't think that I'll be reading the next book. Maybe if I have a lot of spare time and I find it in a bargain bin for a dollar. Since that doesn't seem likely, I think I'm going to let this series sit for a while.
Lucas’ Black Cross cell has been on lockdown four days. The group is taking the time to train their new members: Bianca and Raquel. Bianca is craving blood and ready to runaway with Lucas. Raquel is loving the idea of payback on the supernatural that have plagued her whole life. They are waken up in the middle of the night when Dana (Lucas’ best friend) comes in from watch telling them to get armed for battle.
Raquel wants to be part of the fight, but Dana convinces her that she isn’t ready. Lucas goes with Bianca and Raquel to start packing up their stuff, starting with the weapons. A Black cross member fighting a vampire comes into the building. Lucas goes to help and the vampire is killed. They grab what they have packed and load up in the vans to leave. Eduardo says they are going somewhere they can properly train the two new recruits so they can fight next time.
The Black Cross group starts heading to New York City to join up with the large cell that resides there. On the way, Bianca is able to get a little bit of blood from a bird when they stop. She is also able to call Vic collect. He tells her that there were no casualties from the attack on Evernight. In NYC, Eduardo is reprimanded for the decision to attack Evernight based on the rumor he heard from one vampire. Bianca and Raquel are taken to nicer quarters to sleep away from the rest of their cell.
Bianca continues training with the NYC Black Cross. She is allowed short breaks where she can go up to the roof and eat some pigeons. Eventually, she is allowed out on Patrol. She and Lucas go out into Central Park to look for vampires. Bianca is able to sneak away for a couple for a couple of minutes to email her parents. When they get back, they find that the cell is under alert. They think a vampire is watching the building because they found the birds that Bianca has been draining. Now she’ll have to survive without them.
After a few days with no blood, Bianca starts to seem sick. She isn’t able to hunt on any of her patrols because she isn’t with Lucas. When she finally is with Lucas, he has her drink from him. She warns him that they won’t be able to do that again because she could kill him, which would turn him into a vampire. When they return, Eduardo has gone through Lucas’ stuff and found his stash of cash. His mom takes it for the Black Cross fund and tells him that if they don’t need it, he can have it when he asks for it.
Bianca has trouble sleeping especially after a dream about a vampire. In the morning, Lucas is unable to patrol because of the affect of having his blood drank. Bianca goes out with Milo’s group and is paired with Raquel. She spots the vampires that she dreamed about and Milo says they will have to look around. While Bianca is alone with Raquel, her friend tells her that she is dating Dana. Bianca is hurt that Raquel didn’t tell her at first, but Raquel thought it was obvious that she was gay. Later, Bianca is alone in the tunnels hoping to be able to get some mice. She hears a clicking noise and runs back to tell Eliza. The tunnels start collapsing and Mrs. Bethany shows up.
Mrs. Bethany immediately kills Eduardo. She explains that they knew where the Black Cross cell was because of her email and offers her a spot back at Evernight. She refuses and runs off to find Lucas. When she gets distracted by the fighting, she decides the best way to find him is to go to the rendevous point. She finds him there as well as Kate, Raquel, and Dana. Dana has an unconcious vampire held as prisoner; its Balthazar.
Bianca rides with Dana to chain up Balthazar. When Milos wakes him up, he pretends that he doesn’t know Bianca to protect her. When she gets back to the camp, Bianca tells Lucas what is going on. They go to where Balthazar is chained and tell the guards that he wants to talk with the vampire because he went after his girl. Bianca keeps watch while Lucas starts thinking of how to get Balthazar out of this situation. He warns that it may take a couple of days. The next morning, the torture starts. Bianca is able to keep herself together until they are alone again and starts crying.
Kate comes out from torturing Balthazar and approaches Bianca and Lucas. He tries to tell her that the vampire wasn’t one of Mrs. Bethany’s favorites, wouldn’t know all of her plans. She doesn’t seem to care. Bianca comes up with a plan to get him out. Later that night, the torture starts again. Lucas busts in with Bianca in tow. He approaches Balthazar about his made up attempt to rape Bianca then starts questioning him about Mrs. Bethany’s plan. Bianca whispers for him to make something up. Balthazar says that Mrs. Bethany is after Lucas because he learned too much at Evernight. Lucas stakes him and asks for him and Bianca to take the body to burn it. They load him in a van and start driving. Bianca takes out the stake and asks where they can take him. They drop him off in Chinatown. Balthazar offers for Bianca to stay with him so that the Black Cross doesn’t find out what she is. She turns him down and promises that they will flee the Black Cross soon.
Bianca and Raquel are walking along the streets of New York and see a pale guy in a parka. Raquel insists that he is a vampire and wants to call for backup. Bianca convinces her to wait until they are at an apartment building. Raquel calls from outside while Bianca tries to find the vampire to warn him. He comes out from the shadows and introduces himself as Shepard. Bianca tells him that Black Cross is coming for him and he only has a few minutes to get out. He convinces her to help him. When they get to the apartment, Charity is waiting. She wants to know where Balthazar is, but Bianca refuses to tell her. They all start fighting, but Black Cross comes to the rescue. The vampires escape, but everyone is alright. The next day, Lucas and Bianca are given the duty of going through the tunnels that used to be the NYC cell to find anything useful. Bianca finds her jet brooch while Lucas goes to get blood and water. When he returns, she starts drinking the blood. Just then, Raquel and Dana arrive.
Lucas quickly explains what Bianca is and promises that they will be gone in a few weeks. Dana agrees not to tell anyone. They share an awkward dinner with the rest of the cell before bed. Lucas and Bianca are woken up in the middle of the night. They start questioning Lucas about Bianca. Milos threatens to shoot Bianca with holy water and Lucas goes to stop him. When some of the water hits his skin, it reacts like vampire skin. They handcuff them and load them in a van, driven by Dana, to take the off to be studied. Lucas undoes his handcuffs and then gives Bianca the key. He then threatens Dana with a knife to the throat and makes Milos (her passenger) get out. Lucas and Dana explain that Dana isn’t the one that told on them and is the one that is saving them. Dana drops them off near Grand Central Station, where they say goodbye and Lucas makes Dana’s hostage situation believable.
On the subway train, the decide to go to Balthazar for help. He gives them some money and offers them a place to stay. Lucas explains that they need to get out of New York as quickly as possible. He also lets Balthazar know that the Black Cross suspects that he isn’t dead. Lucas and Bianca head out.
They take a bus to Philadelphia and go shopping for some escentuals. They get a hotel room and have sex before falling alseep. The next day, they meet up to have lunch with Vic and Ranulf. Bianca lets slip that she emailed her parents and Lucas is furious. Vic explains that he has known about the vampires at Evernight since his first year there. Lucas and Bianca explain the rest of their story in more detail. Vic offers for them to stay in his parents wine cellar while he, his parents, and Ranulf go to Italy. As they are driving to the house, Vic tells Bianca and Lucas that they have to meet the ghost that lives in the house.
Vic takes Bianca to the attic, and the ghost gives her permission to stay in the house. Vic takes Lucas and Bianca back to the hotel they are staying at for the next few days. Lucas yells at Bianca for sending the email. She runs out and stays by the pool for a while. He comes to talk to her and they work everything out. A couple of days later, they set up a little apartment in Vic’s wine cellar and start their jobs. Bianca has a lot of trouble being a waitress. While doing her side work, she starts getting dizzy and passes out. She asks to go home and the dizziness continues. She isn’t sure what is wrong with her.
Bianca looses her job after a few days because she is such a terrible waitress. Lucas suggests that she try to get a job in a bookstore. While she searches the paper, Lucas finds an article about a person that was murdered, and all signs point to vampire. They go out at night to try tracking it. Bianca waits outside a bar while Lucas goes in to get information. She hears a man and a nervous woman talking and rushes to check the situation. Realizing the man is a vampire, she threatens him with her stake. The woman runs off and Bianca is left with the other vampire alone. Lucas comes to her rescue, but is unable to kill the vampire. Bianca starts getting really weak again and the vampire takes off while Lucas goes to take care of her.
Bianca takes some time to get well before searching for a new job. When her birthday rolls around, Lucas takes her to the planitarium and gives her a coral bracelet. Afterwards, she tells him the truth about her getting weaker. On their way home, they are confronted by Shepard. He and several other vampires start chasing them. Bianca is too slow and splits off from Lucas. All of the vampires follow her. They want to take her for a ride and Lucas agrees to go with them, hoping he’ll have a better opportunity to get them free later. They arrive at an abondoned health club and are taken to see Charity.
Charity takes them to an abandoned hotel. She takes them up to the diving board of the empty pool and makes Bianca beg Charity to change her or else she will kill Lucas. A wraith shows up to lay its claim on Bianca. Shepard shoves Lucas off of the diving board, but the wraith saves him. He and Bianca are able to get away to a small locker room. Lucas uses an old bottle of vodka and a rag to set Shepard on fire. The exit through a window and steal the van that brought them there.
The next morning, Bianca isn’t feeling well. Lucas takes her to a free clinic and they wait impossibly long for their turn. When the nurse starts to take Bianca’s vitals, her temperature reads 91 degrees. There is also something wrong with her blood pressure. Bianca realizes that this isn’t a normal human disease, so she gets out of there and she and Lucas leave. She realizes that she is no longer human.
Bianca keeps getting weaker. She writes a farewell letter to her parents and makes Lucas promise to send it if anything happens. She continues to get worse and spends most of her time sleeping and dreaming of her memories. Lucas wants her to drink from him and kill him. He wants her to become a vampire, but kill him before he becomes one too. She refuses and eventually dies.
Bianca tries to figure out her ghostly state as Balthazar comes to help Lucas. She finds that when she thinks of something she wants, she gravitates towards it. As Lucas and Balthazar make plans to bury Bianca’s body, she hears a voice tell her not to let them bury her jewelry with her body. She gets into Lucas and can feel his emotions and makes him unable to give up the bracelet and brooch. Bianca is suddenly in a mist and Vic’s wraith explains what is going on. Bianca can’t leave Lucas behind and is suddenly where they are burying her body. For a moment, she is able to make Lucas and Balthazar see her. They realize that because she didn’t turn into a vampire, she became a wraith.
Maxi, Vic’s ghosts, explain that the wraiths made the deal with her vampire parents because they needed someone to help the wraiths. Some of them get lost and can only form when they attach themselves to people’s fears. Bianca, since she is more powerful than the rest, could help them form without having to do that. She watches Lucas and Balthazar some more before going to Evernight. She is able to see her parents and frost the window, but then they cast her out. Maxi shows her that she can be with Lucas, but only in his dreams. Balthazar continues his persuit of Charity now that he knows where she is. Lucas agrees to go with him to capture her and take her away from her tribe.
Maxie starts to show Bianca what she can do as a wraith and mentions a wraith named Christopher. When she picks up her coral bracelet, she is able to make a physical body. Vic and Ranulf return home and Bianca greats them. She explains what happened. Maxie is upset when Bianca tells Vic her name, but still tells her that she can use the jet brooch to find Lucas since he has it with him. Bianca goes to Lucas and sees him fighting with Charity, who knows that Lucas is there to die.
Bianca returns to Vic and Ranulf and asks them to help Lucas and Balthazar. Ranulf gets weapons together while Vic tells them where they are based on Bianca’s description. Vic drives and waits outside. Ranulf is handy with an axe and Bianca can keep the vamps at bay with her wraith power. However, by the time she gets to where Lucas and Charity are, he is already in bad shape. Charity is able to disable her with an iron reel from the projector. Bianca is too injured to help Lucas and Charity takes the opportunity to bite and drain him. The others arrive and are somewhat relieved that Lucas isn’t completely dead. However, Bianca knows that Lucas will consider this the worst possible fate for himself.
