Cressida Cowell
The World Needs a Hero
Camicazi and Fishlegs fly through the fog on the back of the Deadly Shadow calling out to Hiccup. Both are worried their friend is dead, but Camicazi refuses to believe it. The Vampire Spydragon that has left two of its teeth in Hiccup’s arm hears its teeth calling out to it and it listens to and follows the sound. Soon the dragons of the dragon rebellion will awaken and continue their war against the the humans.
1. The Wodensfang tries to drag Hiccup further up into the beach, but is too small to move him. He spits sea water into his face and a hiccup starts to wake up. Hiccup was hit by the ships last in the storm and has lost his memory. The Wodensfang tries to tell him he is a great hero and their is a war starting because the dragon Furious wants to make humans extinct. A dart comes out of the fog and hits the Wodensfang in the shoulder blade. Hiccup gets up to run away from the dragon darts and finds his left side is numb and swollen. He grabs the Wodensfang and pulls the dart out of its shoulder blade as he gets behind a rock. When he peers out from behind the rock, he can see a pair of dragon eyes.
2. Luckily, Hiccup’s brain has retained his knowledge of dragons. There are sand sharks shooting poisonous farts at them while the Wodensfang tries to tell him Hiccup’s own story. Hiccup cannot focus on the story as he tries to keep them alive. The Hogfly wakes up and decides the darts are a game of fetch and starts playing in them. Hiccup gets a dart to the arm as he prevents the Hogfly from getting hit by one, but in his puffed up state, it just bounces off the little dragon. Hiccup gets himself and the two little dragon’s in the broken ship hull and noticed there are teeth in his arm as he takes out the dart. The Wodensfang tells him he was bitten by a Vampire Spydragon the previous day. The Wodensfang gets frustrated with Hiccup ignoring him attached himself to the boy’s face to tell him he must get to the island of Tomorrow and be crowned king because Alvin will destroy all dragons if he becomes king. Hiccup promised to do what the Wodensfang asks. The little sea dragon passes out before he can tell Hiccup he cannot land in the island of Tomorrow because of the guardians.
3. Hiccup puts the Wodensfang into his backpack in hopes it will keep him protected. He looks through a knot hole in the ship and sees the Vampire Spydragon also coming for him with the Sand Sharks. Hiccup tells the Hogfly to puff himself up and play “It” with the Sand Sharks. The hogfly is happy to do so. The spydragon gets closer to Hiccup, but is distracted by the Hogfly’s game with the sand sharks. Hiccup takes the opportunity to tie the rope on the end of the spydragon’s tail to a large rock. He is able to get out of reach before the spydragon realizes he is there. It goes after Hiccup, but is stopped short by its tail. It tries to free itself, but instead ends up having to shed its tail to get free. Hiccup Runs and the Hogfly follows. The darts the sand sharks have been firing at him end up landing in the spydragon. It gives up perusing Hiccup to attack the sand sharks. The sand sharks fly away and the spydragon falls asleep from the darts. Hiccup celebrates for a second, but quickly realizes the sand sharks will be coming back with the rest of the dragon rebellion. He looks out over the island and the most dangerous dragons are all there in swarms. He has no idea how he will get to the island of Tomorrow, be crowned king, and convince the dragon Furious to call off the rebellion in 24 hours.
4. Furious has been resting and looks to be a giant smoking mountain. He calls his second in command, Luna, to him and tells her to send their nastiest dragons they have to kill Hiccup. He tells her she is not to go. He has seen loyal dragons turned to Hiccup’s side and doesn’t want her to be persuaded to switch to the bits side. Stoick and Valhallarama mourn their son. Stoick wonders if he made a mistake by not sending Hiccup away as soon as they realized he was a runt. Furious never would have been released if it weren’t for Hiccup. Valhallarama points out the slavery of humans and dragons could not continue. They saved Hiccup out of love and he changed the world because of it. Many of the Vikings around them have their dragons with them. They know even if they win against the dragon Furious, they might not have their loyal dragon friends with them the next day. Most of them are only following Alvin out of necessity because the dragon rebellion had destroyed their homes. Alvin is excited to learn the power of the jewel to get rid of all dragons, especially Toothless who is loudly mourning the loss of his master. Alvin plans to get rid of all of his enemies as soon as he is crowned in an hour, including his mother, the witch Excellinor.
5. Hiccup and the Hogsfly start trying to make their way to the island of Tomorrow. They start checking all the recked ships in the shore for one they might be able to sail. Eventually, they find a rowboat. They get in and start rowing in the direction Hiccup hopes they need to go. Dragons start to approach from off in the distance and Hiccup knows the dragons will reach them before they get where they need to go. Suddenly, a camouflage dragon with two humans on its back and two other dragons flying nearby tries to lift him out of his rowboat. He remembers the Wodensfang telling him not to trust anyone. He hits the Deadly Shadow amen throws his sand shark darts at it. It flies away and Hiccup has no idea he just chased off his best friends.
6. Hiccups friends had searched for him all night and are just about to give up hope of finding him alive when the Deadly Shadow spits him in the distance. They try to get him out of the boat, but when he attacks on their third attempt, they realize he doesn’t know who they are. Camicazi comes up with a plan to distract the Dragon Rebellion dragons while Hiccup gets to Tomorrow. They hid above the rebellion horde and once they have all gathered around Hiccup, the Deadly Shadow announces it is the Dragon Guardians of Tomorrow and makes a show of its fire and lightning. The other dragons run away in fear and the Dragonmarkers chance them off. Fishlegs sees Hiccup’s boat sink and Hiccup make it to the beach of the island. When Hiccup just walks up the beach, he suddenly realizes Hiccup might not know about the Dragon Guardians of tomorrow.
7. Hiccup finally gets to the island and starts walking up the beach. The sand below him shifts on its own. The hogfly goes into his backpack to hide. Camicazi pushes the Deadly Shadow to go as fast as he can to retrieve Hiccup before the Guardians of Tomorrow get him. Hiccup runs for the dunes to get off the beach and comes up in front of a human guardian. He tries ti explain how the Wodensfang told him he had the Lost Things but they were stolen from him by Alvin. The guardian appreciates his manners, but still calls out for the dragon guardians to take him away for death by airy oblivion. The dragon comes out of the sand, grabs hiccup, and shoots for the sky.
8. As the Dragon Guardians shoot into the sky, Hiccup yells out that he must save Toothless. The dragons lose their grip on him and he lands in a bog. Camicazi urges the Deadly Shadow to go after Hiccup now that all the guardians are distracted. They are able to sneak into the airspace over Tomorrow without being noticed. They see the city is the largest one they have ever seen even though there is not much left to it now. The Human Guardians all start looking for Hiccup knowing it will take some time for the Dragon Guardians to return. Hiccup uses tunnels created by fernwinder dragons to hide. When one possess him in the tunnel, he grabs in to its tail for as long as he can. We he is finally forced to let go, he finds he is not far from the castle he was aiming for where the crowning is supposed to take place.
9. Furious has had his dragons set fire to all the Viking islands to show them they had no where to go. The Druid Guardian starts the crowning process. He reads the prophecy and Alvin steps forward to claim the title of King, but Hiccup has finally arrived and calls out for them to wait.
10. Hiccup tries ti explain what he is doing there, but he is having trouble remembering his own name. He makes his way down the center aisle toward the Druid Guardian. The Hogfly returns to his original owner. Stoick and Valhallarama recognize him first and rush ti embrace their son. Toothless goes to him as well and when the little dragon says his own name, the memories come back to. Hiccup. He admits he does not have any of the King’s Things, but tells them about the lesson he learned when he collected each one. One of the Dragonmarkers speaks out about how their world has been destroyed and she is afraid the dragons won’t stop until they are all dead. The other Vikings agree. The Druid Guardian admits Hiccup would have made a great king in a time of peace, but difficult decisions will have to be made in this time of war. Alvin calls out that Hiccup should be killed for arriving without the lost things. The Druid says he has to crown the one Grimbeard the Ghastly and fate have chosen. He starts to call for the dragon guardians.
11. Fishlegs calls out through the crowd. He says he has a letter written by Grimbeard they described his ideal heir. He and Hiccup found it in the underwater cavern and has kept hold of it since. Grimbeard wanted a heir that was a dragon-whisperer and Gishlegs points out Hiccup is the only one that can speak Dragonese. He wants an heir that can harness Thor’s thunder, which Hiccup did with an axe in the boat off the shores of Land-That-Does-Not-Exist. The crowd starts to speak up about how Hiccup has saved their lives, starting with Camicazi. They end up chanting their approval of Hiccup for King. The Guardian Druid takes this all into consideration and asks the Drsgon Guardians who should be king. He then asks gods for a final sign on who should be king. Nano dragons come out of the grass and brambles to lift Hiccup up off the ground to make it look like he is levitating. The Druid finishes the ceremony crowning Hiccup as King of the Wilderwest.
12. The king of the Nanodragons, Ziggerastica, flies by Hiccup’s ear and tells him the dragon Furious had demanded his nano dragons join them. Ziggerastica refused and so chose to help Hiccup. Alvin complains that Hiccup cheated and his mother scolds him saying he should have cheated better. The Guardian Druid tells Hiccup he is not king until he takes the oath and tells him the words. Hiccup tells the gathered Vikings how Snotlout pledged his sword to him and dies saving him shortly after. His cousin died a hero in his place and he takes the oath in his honor. He refuses to sit in the throne believing it is cursed and instead opts to sit on a rock. The crowd cheers for him. Stoick kneels before him and pledges his sword to him. Hiccup tries to stop him from kneeling, but the Druid Guardian reminds him he is king now. Hiccup says he is honored to accept it. His mother goes next. The rest of the Vikings fall to their knees to pledge the swords and he accepts them all. They cheer for Hiccup again. Toothless is proud to sit on the king’s shoulder.
13. Everyone is thrilled that Hiccup is the new king. They are all celebrating when the Druid Guardian announces the King needs to be left alone to have time to prepare to face the Dragon Furious in single combat. The Wodensfang wakes up and sees Hiccup has been crowned king. He is excited and asks where Hiccup found the real Dragon Jewel. Hiccup tells him there is only one and it is the one around his neck they found in the Amber Slavelands. The Wodensfang tells him it is a fake; another one of Grimbeard’s red herrings.
14. Fishlegs pulls out the map and there is a large red herring across the top and it is winking. Hiccup realizes the Wodensfang is right. The Wodensfang doesn’t understand how thebDruid Guardian could crown him when he didn’t have the real jewel. The Guardian points out he was blindfolded., but he got the approval of the Dragin Guardians and Thor himself lifted Hiccup into the air. The little dragon had hoped Hiccup had found the real jewel on Hero’s End or that it would have found him. Hiccup checks all his pockets and shoes, but he does not have anything. The Wodensfang tells him he made a deal with Furious to bring him the dragon jewel once a king was crowned if Furious held back his rebellion. Wodensfang had planned to take him the fake jewel so Hiccup could go into single combat with the real one. Excellinor is thrilled Alvin will be saved and Hiccup will be the one to die. Stoick and Valhallarama have gone pale knowing that if Hiccuo goes to face Furious without the jewel, it will mean certain death.
15. Hiccup prepares for single combat. Everyone offers him something to help, but he cannot carry it all into battle. Valhallarama reminds him of a letter she wrote him when he was trapped in Danger-Brute prison and had written to her for help. She told him he was the hero and he needed to save himself. Hiccup tells the Windwalker he doesn’t have to go with him if he is afraid. Windwalker insists on going and the. So does Toothless. Hiccup says goodby to his friends and family. He asks them to sing to give him courage as he goes to face Furious. They sing loudly and the small group takes off.
16. They get as close as they can to Furious and he starts moving. He calls out the Wodensfang on not bringing him the dragon jewel. The Wodensfang explains that they only have the fake jewel and the real one is still lost. He hands over the fake jewel. Hiccup sees his opportunity to talk to Furious as the two sea dragons talk telepathically. He tells Furioys he wants to crest a new Wilderwest where dragons and humans live together. Furious won’t hear any of it and attacks. Windwalker has grown into a very stealthy dragon as he has become an adolescent. He flies around Furious keeping them from getting burned from his mouth or hit by lighting from his eyes. When Furious stops moving his head, Windwalker hides behind it. The Wodensfang tries to warn him that sea dragons have eyes in the back of their heads, but it is too late. Windwalker moves, but Furious is able to get his tail. Windwalker and Hiccup go down into the reef. Furious pins Hiccup with two talons.
17. Just as Furious is about to finish off Hiccup, the ticking thing goes off and starts ringing. It is enough to distract Furious long enough for Hiccup to think through the lessons he has learned finding the lost things. He realizes Furious mentioned the lobster necklace as one of Grimbeard possessions. The Hooligan Anthem also mentioned a lobster. He has Toothless break the lobster claw necklace and finds the real Dragon Jewel inside. He frees it just in time for Furious to see it before his next attempt at an attack. Furious is terrified of it.
18. Stoick, Valhalarama, and the Druid Guardian all use the spyglass to watch what is happening to Hiccup. The Vikings start to cheer when they hear that Hiccup has the real dragon jewel. Excellinor asks Alvin exactly what was in the coffin he found. Alvin explains he romances a girl into giving him the location of Grimbeard’s grave, but when he opened it, not only did he lose his hand, but the only thing inside was the lobster claw necklace. When Termagant found him, she nursed him back to health. He gave her the necklace he thought was as worthless as her and left her. Fishlegs has mixed emotions about Hiccup finding the jewel because of humans finding out Alvin is his father. Hiccups good nature is what drew the lost things to him while Alvin’s sinister nature had him give that one away.
19. Furious stops when he sees the real Dragon Jewel. Hiccup tells Furious they can live together in peace, but Furious points out that Hiccup will not live forever and eventually, another might not have his views. He tells Hiccup to smash the jewel and end it or else he will kill him and the. The rest of the Vikings. Hiccup knows he should break the jewel and save his people, but he cannot do it. He throws the jewel as far into the sea as he can, but Furious is able to catch it. When he looks back to Hiccup, he is standing with his arms out and eyes closed prepared to die. Toothless flies in front of Hiccup to protect him from death. Furious sees the scar on Toothless’ chest that matches his own. Furious’ memories of Hiccup the second come flooding back. He is not able to kill Hiccup. The Vikings in the distance continue their singing.
20. The dragon’s heart is healing as he listens to Hiccup’s plea to live together in peace. Furious loved his Hiccup and those emotions come flooding back to him. He loves this new Hiccup. So while he believes Hiccup will do what he can to keep the dragons free, Hiccup will not live forever. Then something dreadful happens.
21. Excellinor goes to Madguts the Murderous and tells him Hiccup threw the jewel away and now Furious has it. She tells him Alvin needs his Stealth Dragon to go and kill Furious. Madguts tells the Stealth dragon to listen to Alvin, so it does. The mother-son duo take off on the back of the dragon and cannot be sensed while in the Stealth dragon. Alvin wants to do things his way that keep him out of danger. His mom calls him a coward.
22. While the Dragon Furious and Hiccup talk, there is no way for them to have any idea of the approaching Stealth dragon. Furious stops and perks his head up, be he can’t see or smell anything unusual. It is too late when Alvin plunges his hook into the dragon’s hand making him drop the jewel. The Stealth dragon dives for it and Alvin catches it at the last second. There a few times the Stealth dragon’s excitement kept it from being completely invisible and both Hiccup and Furious could see Alvin and the Witch were behind the attack. Hiccup tries to run to Furious, but falls on the slimy rocks.
23. Furious calls out to his dragons they the humans have betrayed them. The dragons start to attack, so Stoick calls out to join the battle on their dragons that remain. As the battle rages in, Alvin tries to break the jewel on the back of the stealth dragon, but is unsuccessful. They land so he can use the rocks and his boot to break it open. Hiccup sees this and tries to call out to the Dragon Furious to stop Alvin, but Furious cannot hear his tiny human voice through the battle. Alvin brings his foot down on the jewel.
24. Toothless and Camicazi look for the jewel frantically while the battle rages above and all around them. Fishlegs confronts Alvin as a terrible father. Alvin says Fishlegs couldn’t my be a treacherous and he has no doubt he should have been sent out in the lobster pot. Fishlegs says he disowns him and is starting his tribe, the No-Names, where everyone is welcomed except Alvin. Alvin starts to go back for the jewel, but the Dragon Guardians of Tomorrow watched him defy the rules of single combat. The grab Gina’s quick as lightning in a whirlwind and take him up to face his oblivion in the sky. Toothless finds the Jewel, but Furious grabs it first.
25. Now that Furious has the jewel, he is ready to let his Dragons end the Vikings. He still isn’t able to kill Hiccup. Hiccup begs him to just give him a minute to speak and then Furious can continue the war if he likes. Furious is frustrated, but he calls out for the dragons to stop and listen. The Vikings stop fighting when the dragons do. Hiccup speaks in Dragonese and has Stormfly translate into Norse for the humans. He then tells Gurioys he might be able to get rid of all of the Vikings, but there are more humans around the world. He tells them the Romans have terrible weapons. They will be fighting for a long time if he insists on total war against the humans, who will not stop fighting until the last one is gone. Hiccup can see the dragons are weary of the fight. He promises he will do everything he can to keep the peace between them and swears no dragon will ever be a slave again. They don’t need to lose more companions to a senseless battle. Furious knows he is right and calls off the rebellion. He cuts Hiccup’s chest just enough to draw blood and does the same to his own so they are blood brothers and their promises sealed in blood. Everyone cheers.
26. The witch raises up the storm blade and rushes at Hiccup on the stealth dragon. Furious sees the sword in the air and it gives him time to stop the witch from killing Hiccup. He takes the sword to his own chest and flings the witch into the deepest part of the sea. Hiccup is hopeful the dragon’s hide would not be affected by the wound. Furious stops cold. He can feel the poison from the witches hit going through him. He lays in the bay. He tells the dragons that Luna will be his successor. Hiccup promises him he has a plan. If it comes to the end of his life and the humans still seem hopeless, he will send all of the dragons to the north to hide until the humans are all gone. Furious likes the crazy plan. He gives Hiccup the Dragon Jewel to keep him safe from dragons in case they don’t follow his last orders. He decides if he is going to die, he wants to do it out in the great open sea. He thinks he might even be able to work out the poison there. He tells them not to mourn him because he is finally free now that has saved Hiccuo, even if it was 100 years too late. He swims off and seems to get stronger the further out he gets.
27. Hiccup declares the dragons are free and can go home. Any dragons that want to stay are welcome as citizens of the Wilderwest. They go back to Grimbeards ruined castle in the Island of Tomorrow to celebrate. Hiccup declares Fishlegs the Faithful and Camicazi the Courageous will be his First Warriors. Fishlegs wants to woo Barbara the Barbarian, but Hiccup reminds him of the mess they got into the last time Fishlegs insisted on perusing a Viking warrior princess and begs him not to. Hiccup is excited for the new way of the world, but Old Wrinkly points out things haven’t changed so much just yet. When the Vikings and dragons start bickering amongst themselves, Hiccup reminds them they are there to celebrate and tells them they should sing. Humans and dragons join in.
