How to Train Your Dragon 10
Cressida Cowell
1. A warrior and its silver dragon wait in a tree for their mark that happens to be coming down the path - Hiccup. Hiccup and his three dragon friends have been on the run for a year and are very tired. They have just finished rescuing dragons from Vistithug traps. The Wodensfang thinks they need to go to the Slavelands to find the Dragon Jewel so Hiccup can reclaim his position as King of the Wilderwest and end the human versus dragon war. The Wodensfang thinks Hiccup has been distracted from the quest by looking for his father and Fishlegs. The Hooligans were said to have fled to Vistithug lands when the dragons fried Berk. He admits he does feel responsible for Fishlegs and has looked out for him their whole lives. Hiccup pulls out the map. He points out the picture of the fish at the top - a red herring. He thinks this is the sort of prank Grimbeard would have pulled. Thinking back to his time with Grimbeard, the Wodensfang agrees. The warrior in the tree and the dragon lean over to get a better view of the map. The Wodensfang calls out in a whisper that they are in danger. All three dragons insist Hiccup wear the Vistithug helmet they stole. He reluctantly agrees. As they are listening for any danger, the warrior springs to attack. Hiccup and the Windwalker move quick to avoid arrows. Hiccups helmet saves him from a few as well. As they flee, hiccup sees the dragon that is following him is a glowing Silver Phantom. He stops running and yells out to his mother, Valhalarama, that it is him, her own son, that she is attacking.
2. Hiccup on the Windwalker tries to outrun the Silver Phantom while his mother shoots arrows at him. Unfortunately, the visor on the helmet gets stuck down and the dragons can’t hear anything he tries to say. He tries to tell them it is his mother chasing them. When the Phantom grabs one of the Windwalker’s legs, he panics and shoots out of the trees and into the sky. Without the trees in the way, the much larger Phantom is easily able to catch up. Valhallarama grabs Hiccup off the Windwalker and takes him back to the ground. She pulls out her sword and so does Hiccup to defend himself. He can see she is impressed with his sword fighting. The Wodensfang has the dragons enact plan four. The Windwalker distracts the fighters while Toothless dive bombs Valhallarama and the Wodensfang uses his fire to burn down a tree to fall on her. Hiccup is finally able to get his helmet off and tries to tell her he is her son and the tree is about to fall in her, but he accidentally speaks it in Dragonese instead of Norse. She understands she has been trying to kill her son, who is the Outcast enemy of the Wilderwest, but she doesn’t catch the part about the falling tree. It ends up hitting her in the head. Hiccup checks and sees she is still alive. The Windwalker grabs him quickly with his claws and takes off with the other two dragons following. When Hiccup finally gets them to understand the situation, they go back to look for his mother, but she is gone. They go to the cave they have been using and go to sleep.
3. The Dragon Furious has taken over the isle of Berk, but is not satisfied with the success. While he is aiming for the extinction of all humans, he knows it will all be pointless if he does not kill Hiccup. The Deadly Shadow -three headed dragon, can mirror any background or passing items- tells him it is as good as done and takes off into the sky.
4. Hiccup and his dragon friends have been watching Viking tribes arrive at Prison Darkheart over the past two weeks. He knows he mother betrayed him and gave the map to the witch and she has everyone searching the prison for the jewel. He believes Stoick and Fishlegs are in there and plans to rescue them. Toothless points out Furious has tried to get in every night, but has not been successful. Hiccup puts on an eye patch, makes a wart out of some pink wax, and douses himself in stink dragon scent to prevent people from recognizing him. When the Windwalker says he wants to go with him, Hiccup says it is too dangerous for him to go because Hiccup cannot hide him. He hugs the Windwalker before going underwater to follow a slave ship into the prison. The Wodensfang breathes air into him when he needs it. Hiccup uses two daggers to attach himself to the boat. He is nervous about seeing his father for the first time since he became a slave because of Hiccup. The Windwalker watches the boat go into the gates. Someone spots him and fires at him. The Windwalker takes off in a hurry and forgets Hiccup’s helmet. The Deadly Shadow finds the helmet and recognizes it as Hiccups. He thinks the stink dragon scent will make him easy to find in the prison.
5. Hiccup is quickly discovered and out amongst the other slaves in an open air dinning room. A large man calls him over to join him at his table and Hiccup quickly realizes it is Stoick. His father doesn’t recognize him and Hiccup says his name is Warty McSmelly from the … tribe. As Stoick talks to him and introduces him to the rest of his team, the Amber Hunters, he keeps getting the name wrong. Hiccup wonders if he looks so different that even his father doesn’t recognize him. He looks around and see some familiar faces, including Gobber and Baggy Bum. Hiccup asks about Fishlegs, but none of them seem to remember him. When Snotlout, Chief if the Hooligans, comes up to them, Hiccup asks him about Fishlegs. Snotlout is glad to report he had become one of the Lost at the Seeking. Hiccup doesn’t my understand what that means. Baggy Bum says he is ashamed to be Snotlout’s father and Snotlout is hurt for a moment before going back to being a chief. A little girl with missing teeth and wild hair points out Hiccups waistcoat is smoking. Hiccup makes an excuse about explosions and the. Steals some food to give to Toothess and the Wodensfang. He lets them under the table with the scraps. Alvin enters the courtyard and everyone goes quiet. His witch mother scurries behind him and stops directly in front of Hiccup.
6. Luckily for Hiccup, Excellinor is nearly blind and did not recognize him. She scurrries up to join Alvin and is furious the slaves haven’t found the jewel yet. Alvin has had his missing parts replaced with fine metals and has gotten muscular to make him look more regal. Hiccup asks the Wanderer girl in the bear suit, Eggingarde, about the Lost. She tells him they go out with the ride everyday to look for the jewel and some don’t come back. She has been in the prison as long as she can remember. Excellinor tells the slaves whoever brings her the jewel or Hiccup will have their slavemark removed and freedom granted. Alvin asks if that is possible in a whisper and Excellinor quietly admits it is not.
7. Eggingarde shows Hiccup a bed he can use in the dungeon. He asks if it used to be Fishleg’s bed and she tells him about the previous occupants. He asks again about Fishlegs and she describes him perfectly. Hiccup is shocked when she says she hasn’t met him. She tells him the Story of the Slave Boy, the Slave Girl, and the Monster of the Amber Slavelands. The boy and girl were rowing their yachts out at very low tide and saw odd claw marks in the sand. They get out to look at them, but a clawed hand with eyes at the end of each claw comes to them. They jump back in their yachts and tow as fast as they can. They eyes follow them and keep pace. When the boy’s boat hits a hidden dragon trap and breaks, he gives up and lies in the sand. The claw comes and takes him. The girl is able to row away to safety. Hiccup and his dragons have trouble getting to sleep. Hiccup tells himself it was just a story and could not be what happened to Fishlegs.
8. The next morning, Alvin opens the gate to the Amber Slavelands. Eggingarde shows Hiccup a sand yacht he can use. They use their poles to make their way out across the red sand. Snotlout is not happy about having to go out with them as their guard, but Alvin insists on it. Hiccup’s yacht reminds him of his old boat, the Hopeful Puffin and named the yacht the Hopeful Puffin 2. When they all get out far enough, Stoick gives them an encouraging speech and tells them to blow on their ivory whistles if they run into trouble. When Snotlout finally reaches them in his bigger, slower boat, he is furious they aren’t listening to him. He demands someone stay with him for protection. They all refuse. Snotlout starts rowing his way back to the prison, but Gobber easily catches up with him and breaks his boat. He tells Snotlout to think of a something he has done as chief that would make one of them want to carry him back with them in their own yacht. They all take off to hunt for the jewel in the sands leaving Snotlout alone.
9. Hiccup goes with Stoick and Eggingarde out to look for the dragon jewel. They collect whatever Amber they find, but there is no sign of the jewel. Hiccup asks Stoick about his son. He admits everything went wrong because of all the questions Hiccup asked. But after becoming a slave himself, he now understands why Hiccup wanted to free the dragons. He thinks Hiccup’s questions might be worth the sacrifice of their old way of life. He hopes Hiccup is doing well. Hiccup’s sand yacht goes down a ridge and flips over. Hiccup sees a handprint in the sand and suggests they get out of there knowing it is the same hand with eyes that got Fishlegs. He decides not to tell anyone because it would be bad for morale. There is the sound of a horn warning them to come back. They rush back and Gobber and Baggybum carry Snotlout back between their yachts. They barely make it. The witch checks all their baskets but is furious none of them have the jewel. They head down to the sleeping dungeon.
10. The invisible deadly shadow creeps through the prison following Hiccup’s scent. Hiccup wakes up from a nightmare and thinks he hears something. Just as he figures he is probably safe because Toothless and the Wodensfang are sleeping so soundly, something wraps around him and his dragons. He cannot move or yell out. The Wodensfang tries to yell out there is danger, but Hiccup already knows.
11. Hiccup and his dragons are carried out to a drainage tunnel and set free. He finds Camicazi and her Bog Burglar friends (Typhoon, Sporta, Harriettahorse, and Beefburger) have been running an escape service. Every few nights they try to sneak someone else out. They were a day too late for Fishlegs. Hiccup says he has to stay to find Fishlegs. Camicazi tries to convince him he should be out looking for the jewel instead, but he insists on staying. She wants to stay with him, but Hiccup points out she needs to run her escape service. He tells her to take Eggingarde out next. Camicazi reluctantly agrees.
12. The Deadly Shadow follow’s Hiccup’s scent to his bed and is furious that he isn’t there. It destroys the bedding and turns visible for a moment. When it calms down, it turns invisible again and sneaks back out of the room. It is only about two minutes later when the Bog Burglar Escape Artists return Hiccup to the room. He wakes up Eggingarde and introduces her to his friends. He tells Camicazi she should take the dangerous trip up north through dragon territory to get her back to the Northern Wanderers. Camicazi agrees a bit too easily. Eggingarde does make it back to her family and meets her mother and little brother as well as her scary grandmother. The Wodensfang points out something must have destroyed Hiccup’s bedding, but Hiccup and Toothless are too tired to listen to his warnings and fall asleep.
13. The Hairy Scary Librarian’s job as a slave is to row out in the waters that surround the prison and collect any reusable weapons. One morning, he finds the Vistithug helmet that looks just like the one Hiccup the Outcast has been said to wear. He believes Hiccup is in the prison and rows off in a hurry to tell the witch hoping it will earn him his freedom.
14. The slaves are woken up early the next morning and gathered in the main hall. Alvin announces they have found Hiccup’s helmet and Bog Burglar’s drainage entrance. He grabs Snotlout and asks Hiccup to give himself up. Hiccup hesitates. But knows he has to do the right thing. He announces his presence and Alvin demands he be passed up to the front. Stoick is happy to see him and wondering what he is doing there. Hiccup admits he was trying to rescue them. Stoick and Gobber are both proud of him. When Hiccup reaches the front, he is searched. He tries to tell the dragons to fly away, but the Hairy Scary Librarian catches them in his nets. Alvin wants to kill Toothless, but Excellinor reminds him the toothless dragon is one of the king’s lost things. He settles for killing the Wodensfang, but Hiccup says he does not know which toothless dragon is the right one. The Wodensfang hides his teeth. Alvin decides he will kill Hiccup, but his mother says they need him to find the jewel. She gives Hiccup a deadline of three hours to find it. He is brought the map. She has all of the warriors pointing their weapons at him as he boards the Hopeful Puffin 2 and has Gormless demonstrate the machine that shoots six spears at once.
15. Hiccup moves through the sand slowly and can feel extra weight in his basket. He tells the witch he needs more space for his jewel sensing to work. When the army has backed off enough, he scolds Camicazi for not leaving with the others. From the basket, she says she is never letting him out of her sight again. A gust of wind kicks up the sand and Hiccup, yacht and all, disappears before everyone’s eyes. Excellinor starts digging for him. She smells something and starts jumping up in the air to grab him. Alvin Stella half the army to dog and the other half to jump. He reminds his mother he wanted to kill Hiccup when they had the chance.
16. As the Deadly Shadow carries off Hiccup and Camicazi, she pulls out her battle axe and gives him a spare sword. Hiccup regrets not listening to the Wodenfang’s warnings that they were being followed. When they land, the dragon un-camoflodges itself. Hiccup is shocked to see a Deadly Shadow. He doesn’t have much hope and notices the powerful dragon also has yellow spots on its cheeks to indicate it is also venomous. It knocks them over and calls out loudly from all three heads. Just as the Deady Shadow is about to shoot fire at Hiccup and Camicazi, the middle head calls for them to stop. It points out the lobster claw necklace that Hiccup is wearing.
17. The Deadly Shadow asks Hiccup about the necklace. He tells them it was a gift from his best friend. They are surprised he speaks Dragonese and use their dragon gaze to make sure he is telling the truth. The dragon starts to pace in circles as the three heads debate what to do. They come back to Hiccup to explain their answer. He has two quests: to find Fishlegs, but also to find the jewel that could make all dragons extinct. The left, Innocense, head wanted to honor an older promise they made to protect Fishlegs. The right head, Arrogance, wants to kill them to complete their promise to the dragon Furious. The middle head, Patience decides to honor the first promise they made and help Hiccup find Fishlegs. Hiccup gets on its back and Camicazi gets behind him. They take off.
18. Hiccup remembers the story Eggingarde told him and tells the Deadly Shadow to fly east and look for a rock that looks like a witch’s finger. When they find the rock and an overturned sand yacht, Hiccup’s heart sinks. He knows the story Eggingarde told him wasn’t just a story, but what really happened to Fishlegs.
19. When they land, Hiccup goes to the recked sand yacht and finds Fishleg’s rucksack he made from the lobster pot he was found in as a baby. He cries over the loss of his best friend. The Deadly Shadow cries as well and asks for his name. Hiccup tells them it. When he is done crying, a voice inside Hiccup tells him to find the jewel and become king of the Wilderwest for Fishlegs and everyone like him. The Deadly Shadow argues amongst themselves. Now that Fishlegs is gone, they have no reason to protect the one wearing the lobster claw necklace. They decide to keep their promise to the dragon Furious. As it starts to come after Hiccup, it falls to the ground.
20. The Deadly Shadow is stuck in a trap and starts screaming and firing lightning in all directions from all his heads. Hiccup tells him he can help free him if he calms down, the Deadly Shadow heads debate and become quiet to let Hiccup help. He approaches the stuck leg and finds the most complicated trap he has ever seen. He is glad he has spent the last year freeing dragons from similar traps.
21. Termagant was the half-Berserk, half-Murderous daughter of the Murderous chief. She was very gentle and loved the Deadly Shadow. When she met a young fisherman and fell in love. Her father wanted her to marry a warrior, but she didn’t listen and married the man she loved. While she was pregnant, the man died at sea. When the baby was born, it was declared a runt and had to be sent out to sea in a lobster pot. She gave it the lobster claw necklace her husband gave her and sent it off. She asked the deadly Shadow to follow it and take it to an island wheee she would meet them as soon as her health recovered. The Deadly Shadow lost track of the lobster pot in the mist and wasn’t able to find it again.
22. Hiccup continues to work on the trap as he tells the dragons what happened to their baby. Innocence tells him to leave them as the sand starts getting wetter, but he cannot just leave the dragon to drown knowing I’m he is an air dragon and his gills will only last them so long. A few minutes later, the trap is sprung and the Deadly Shadow takes to the air. It reaches out to grab Hiccup, but the Monster claw with eyes grabs him by the ankle and pulls him down.
23. Hiccup is pulled through the sand and into a cave in the sand held up by glass the dragon makes with its hot and then cold flames. Hiccup has learned how to tell which dragons are capable of thought and contemplation and which are monsters. This one is definitely a monster. Hiccup thinks it resembles a slitherdang and thinks it should have a weakness inside its mouth. He pretends to be dead so the monster will start to swallow him and he can make the attack. When it grabs him, he does his best to keep still. The monster squeezes him, but a hiccup didn’t make a sound. The dragon decides to just eat him since he’s not making any noise and thinks he is dead. It covers Hiccup in slime to help it go down easier. Hiccup is glad when it starts at his feet to avoid his helmet. He waits in agonizing pain as the monstrous dragon starts to devour him while. When its mouth is up to his knees, he grabs his sword and the dragon senses the movement. Hiccup strikes the spot on the monster’s head and the dragon dies spitting out Hiccup, brine and sand. Hiccup washes himself off and sees his big toe is deflated and will never be the same again. He then realizes he is stuck in the cavern. He pulls out the map and the red herring at the top seems to be winking at him. He believes the jewel is there.
24. Hiccup follows the squiggly lines and his own gut instincts down a tunnel and into a large maze of glass, some of which is so polished it is reflective like mirrors. He continues on until he comes to the dark red dragon jewel on a necklace and imbedded into a column of glass. He sees the initials GG carved into the necklace and cuts down the column. It shatters and he debates whether to take or leave the jewel. He decides to take it and very carefully extracts it from the glass and cleans it up before putting it around his neck and down his shirt. He hears someone weakly say his name and follows the voice until he comes to another column that seems to have a boy stuck to it. He presses his slavemark to the glass and the boy presses his own to Hiccup’s. It is Fishlegs.
25. Hiccup very carefully breaks the glass to free Fishlegs. He is nearly frozen and asks what Hiccup is doing there. Hiccup tells him he was looking for him and tells him what has been going on. Fishlegs is excited to learn about his parents and the Deadly Shadow dragon. They study the map and find the tunnel that is the exit. They follow it and it goes up under the sea and to the surface. Hiccup breaks the glass and they start swimming for the land they can see in the distance. Fishlegs doesn’t think he’ll be able to make it and Hiccup tells him to keep swimming.
26. The Deadly Shadow and Camicazi dug in the sand after Hiccup until the water came. The dragon feels like this is its day for redemption. They continue searching for Hiccup in the water. Just as Hiccup is about to give up, the Deadly Shadow spots them in the water. It lands next to them a bit roughly in its excitement. It puts both boys in its back and takes off into the sky. Upon seeing Fishlegs, the Deadly Shadow knew he was Termagant’s son and pledge his alligence to him until death. Hiccup tells him about his parents and his new dragon and Fishlegs finally feels like he knows who he is.
27. Valhallarama on the back of her Silver Phantom flies above Hiccup, his friends, and the Deadly Shadow. She is able to see the three children. While the Deadly Shadow would normally sense danger, he was not expecting it and was overly happy from finding Fishlegs. Valhallarama swoops down over them and plucks Hiccup right off his back. The Silver Ohantom is the fastest riding dragon and they shoot off back towards Prison Darkheart. She takes the jewel from around Hiccup’s neck and puts it around her own. Hiccups years of frustration of her never being there for him come out and he yells at her for betraying him.
28. Valhalarama and the Silver Phantom take Hiccup back to Proson Darkheart where all of the humans have gathered and are trying to fight off the dragon apocalypse happening right outside their walls. She takes off her helmet and the witch approaches her. She tries to talk to the Hero mother-to-mother and eventually demands Valhallarama give her the jewel. When she is finally done talking, Valhalarama tells her story. When she was just a girl, her father told her the prophecy that the new King of the Wilderwest would be the only one that could save the Archipelago. She quested for the lost things. When she came back to find Alvin had so many of them, she was not told Hiccup had found them first. She says he thinking was rearranged when Hiccup dropped a tree on her. She realized she could not be king because she didn’t think about how people were suffering all over and they did nothing to stop it. Hiccup did. He has been trying to help people as well as dragons. She knows that the arrow she holds that she pulled from the leg of her own dragon was made from Excellinor’s ravens’ feathers and covered in her vorpent venom. She calls out to the people to make a choice for their king: Alvin or Hiccup. The witch reminds her that Hiccup is a slave and cannot be king. Valhalarama pulls the brand out and gives herself the slavemark on her own forehead.
29. Valhallarama announces to the crowd that she is redefining the slavemark as the Dragonmark. She calls for anyone that wants to follow Hiccup as their king should come and get it as well. The younger generations start lining up ti Hiccup’s surprise. They have been following his exploits and know that he isn’t the loser everyone claimed he was, but a clever kid that has had many harrowing adventures. Camicazi cuts to the front of the line to get her mark when she arrives with Fishlegs. Alvin calls for the attack on the traitors and a battle breaks out before all the willing followers of Hiccup can get their own Dragonmarks. Valhalarama makes her way to Stoick so they can fight side by side.
30. The dragon furious shouts out to attack the prison and the other dragons do as they are told. Valhalarama yells for everyone fighting for Hiccup and the Dragonmark to meet on the nearby Bog Burglar island. Alvin yells for his followers to go to the Vistithug island. Snotlout is confused on which way to go even after Gobber asks him to join them. Valhalarama gets to Hiccup and puts the jewel around his neck. She tells him the most important thing is for him to get out with the jewel. He gets on the Deadly Shadow with Fishlegs and Camicazi and they take off. Before leaving the island, the go towards Alvin who still has Toothless and the Wodensfang in nets on the Librarian’s heart slicers. Hiccup is able to cut them free, but Alvin gets his hook in the chain of Hiccup’s necklace and breaks it. Furious briefly sees Hiccup is not only getting away, but that the Deadly Shadow is helping him. He tries to grab them out of the air with his jaws, but misses. He has a tantrum and the other dragons scurry away to avoid being hurt. Thunderer comes to tell him they have won Prison Darkheart. Furious vows to not let Hiccup grow up and says he will scorch the entire earth to kill him himself.
31. The Windwalker has been catching fish everyday so he would be prepared for Hiccup’s return. When he sees the Deadly Shadow approach the secret cave with Hiccup, he joins them in the air. They all celebrate being together and eat their fill of fish. Hiccup wakes up in the middle of the night to the sound of Furious destroying Prison Darkheart. He is worried that Alvin will destroy all the dragons and it will be Hiccup’s fault for finding the lost things. The Wodensfang tries to comfort him. He still has one lost thing and the Wodensfang thinks the others will return to him. Toothless talks in his sleep making them both laugh and Hiccup is finally able to get back to sleep. The Wodensfang goes to the cave entrance to look out into the sky. He isn’t sure if he should trust Hiccup, but he does.
