How To Train Your Dragon 1
Cressida Cowell
1. Hiccup is known for being useless. The other boys are not happy with the fact that Gobber has declared Hiccup will lead their mission to scale a mountain side, go into a cave, and stealthily steal baby dragons.
2. Snotlout (Hiccups’s cousin) immediately takes over command when Gobber is out of earshot and leads the boys up the cliff side. Hiccup and Fishlegs are last and the two no one expects to pass the mission. They get to the cave entrance and Snotlout tells Hiccup to go first in case any dragons are awake. He crawls through a winding tunnel until they get to an open area illuminated by glow worms and filled with sleeping dragons. Hiccup grabs a Basic Brown, but Fishlegs tries to go for a fancier dragon. He knocks over a pile of them and wakes them with a series of sneezes. He refuses to leave without a dragon even though the dragons are waking up. Hiccup gives him his and they run out of the cave as quickly as possible. Hiccup gets bit in the leg by one of the dragons. Gobber tells them they have to jump off the cliff into the sea to survive. The cold air and water keeps the dragons away from the boys and the beasts return to the warm of their cave. Gobber helps the boys out of the water.
3. The boys get out of the water and the dragons start to attack them again. Gobber throws his axe to take out the biggest one and the whole herd backs off. The boys run until they are safe and then Gobber yells at them for waking the dragons. Hiccup takes responsibility for the situation and Gobber punishes the entire group with limpet rations for three weeks. They start making their way back to the village. Fishlegs offers to give Hiccup his dragon back, but Hiccup admits he grabbed another dragon when they were in the tunnel. He felt like it was meant to be his dragon. When they check what it looks like, they are disappointed to see a very small, common type of dragon. Hiccup thinks it is a sign they are meant to be common people. Fishlegs thinks Hiccup will be a hero.
4. As they get back to the village, the boys are showing off their new dragons. When Snotlout insists on seeing Hiccups, he roars with laughter at the toothless little dragon. Fishlegs points out Snotlout’s Monstrous Nightmare, Fireworm, shouldn’t be his because he is not the son of the chief. Hiccup knows he has to challenge Snotlout for the dragon and does so. Snotlout accepts the challenge and says they will fight after Thor’s Day Thursday when they pass their final tests to become Vikings. Hiccup and Fishlegs go to check out the book Gobber recommended them, but are disappointed to find it’s only piece of advice for training a dragon is to tell at it. They realize they’ll have to find their own training method.
5. The next morning, Toothless is still sleeping under Hiccup’s bed. He goes to talk to his grandfather, Old Wrinkly, about it. Old Wrinkly points out that Hiccup is not like the other boys. Leadership through creative skills and problem solving might be just what their tribe needs. He suggests Hiccup use what he has learned from watching and talking to dragons to figure out some new training techniques.
6. A giant sea dragon that has been asleep for centuries after eating an entire Roman legion starts to stir.
7. Hiccup and Fishlegs check on Toothless and find he has woken up. Hiccup tries to talk to him in Dragonese, but Toothless doesn’t really listen and bites him. He wants fish. Hiccup takes him to his father, Stoic’s room to have him eat the mice in there. When Stoic arrives with his own dragons, Hookfang and Newtsbreath, he notices how small Toothless is. Fishlegs says Toothless is a rare Toothless Daydream dragon and is the royal heir of the king of all the dragon. Stoic is impressed and leaves them to clean up the mess Toothless made in his bedroom. That night, Hiccup sneaks Toothless into his room to protect his dragon from Hookfang and Newtsbreath. Toothless gives off enough heat to warm Hiccup and allow him to drift off into a deep sleep (he is usually too cold to properly sleep).
8. Hiccup attempts training Toothless with the yelling method, but he knows it is no use. He tries to be nice to him in hope gratitude will get Toothless to listen to him. Fishlegs points out that Hiccup is spoiling Toothless and Toothless makes a similar point that dragons only listen to men they fear. Fishleg’s dragon, Horrorcow, acts more like a cow than a dragon. Snotlout and Dogsbreath walk past after Toothless deficates all over Hiccup in his rebellion to do his business outside. Even their dragons make fun of Toothless and Horrorcow. After they walk away, Toothless calls them cowards and threatens them, but Hiccup knows the bigger dragons can’t hear him.
9. Hiccup and Fishlegs take their dragons down to the beach to attempt hunting. Horrorcow doesn’t have any interest in killing anything. Hiccup tries to convince Toothkess to catch fish using flattery or suggesting revenge against Hookfang. Toothless considers these, but eventually it is Hiccup’s jokes that get him to go fishing. He brings back a small pile of fish and Fishlegs notices Toothless getting his first tooth. Old Wrinkly has been watching them and is confident Hiccup will pass the initiation test. He is more concerned about a big storm that he says is coming to them in a few days
10. Thorsday Thursday rolls around and Hiccup is too nervous to eat anything before the test. His father, Stoic, makes a bet with the leader of the Meathead tribe that his son will catch more fish than his. When the initiation test starts, Hiccup promises Toothless he will tell him a lot of jokes if he catches him a lot of fish. Toothless is in a bit of a mood and it takes insults from Fireworm to really get him going. While out catching fish, he calls Fireworm a sloppy snob. Fireworm attacks him and all the dragons start fighting with each other. No amount of yelling from the boys will bring them around. Gobber yells loud enough to stop the dragon fight. The elders (including Stoic and the leader of the Meathead tribe) decide all of the boys will be banished for failing to control their dragons. He will let them stay one last night because it is to stormy to sail them to the main land. Hiccup points out how ridiculous it is to expect them all to be heroes and that Stoic would banish his own son. Snotlout threatens to kill Hiccup as soon as they are banished. Hiccup yells out at Thor and dares him to strike him with lightning, but the storm moves out to see instead.
11. Two enormous sea dragons are swept up onto the Long Beach. Badbreath went to check his fishing nets and found the larger one in the process of eating the smaller one. He rushes to tell Stoic, who did not sleep well thinking about overturning his decision to banish his son. He immediately checks out the situation before calling for a counsel of war. On the way to the big hall, Hiccup notices there aren’t any dragons around even though they usually stay pretty close to their masters. Gobber reads from “How to Train Your Dragon” and Stoic decides they will all stand on the edge of the cliff and yell “go away” at the sea dragon. The dragon roars back at them, cuts off Gobber’s clothes with a claw and flicks him back to his own house with a finger. He then sets the naval fleets of both tribes on fire. The Vikings run away and try to decide what to do. Stoic decides they will have to talk to the dragon and Gobber volunteers even though he doesn’t know Dragonese. Fishlegs offers up that Hiccup can speak to dragons. Stoic is embarrassed by the situation, but offers Hiccup a place in the tribe if he talks to the dragon for them. Hiccup agrees.
12. Hiccup forces himself to go talk to the dragon and tries to avoid looking in its eyes. The dragon plays with sheep before it eats them. He tells Hiccup how he is particularly good at ripping out human spines before eating humans. Hiccup decides to try riddling conversation with the dragon. He ends up talking with the dragon and asks him about his singing supper. The Green Death tells him everyone is supper for someone else eventually and the one still singing in his stomach is a smaller dragon. He plans to eat the Vikings, but after talking with Hiccup, he is too tired and goes to sleep with the intent to eat them when he wakes up. Hiccup returns to let the tribes know the Green Death comes in peace, but still plans to eat them
13. Stoic and Mogadon argue about what to do. Hiccup leaves the counsel to their arguing and starts walking off. The rest of his fellow banned boys follow. Mogadon’s son, Thuggory asks Hiccup what they should do. Snotlout tries to take control of the situation, but Thuggory puts him in his place and insists Hiccup should come up with a plan since he was clever enough to survive talking to the Green Death once. As Hiccup is thinking, Thuggory tells him there is another gigantic dragon on another shore. The hike to the highest point of the mountain to get a better view. If the Purple Death. Hiccup decides they will pit the two large dragons against each other, but they will need their dragons to do it. The dragons have been hiding nearby and decide their best chance of survival is to do what the Vikings say and dessert them if things start to go wrong.
14. The boys gather feathers and clothes to make bombs that should upset the massive dragon’s senses. Fireworm starts to taunt the green death and lead him towards the Purple Death while the other dragons drop feather bombs on him to keep him from catching her. At one point, the Viking boys aren’t able to keep up with the dragons and the Green Death gets enough of a window to grab Fireworm.
15. Fireworm is able to escape in the next round of feather bombs, but has a broken wing. When the two massive dragons collide, they start fighting. The boys run away as fast as they can until they see the dragons have stopped moving completely. Hiccup knows something isn’t right because he doesn’t hear a death song from the age Death. Just as Thuggory is announcing the victory and calls for cheering, the Green Death’s head moves and Fireworm calls for the dragons to desert.
16. The Green Death is dying, but he wants to eat Hiccup before he does and chases after they boys. He grabs Dogsbreath, but tosses him aside. The boys try to hide in the bracken, but the dragon sets it on fire. Hiccup gives himself up and the GreenDeath picks him up and tosses him into the air. Hiccup is about to go down his throat.
17. The dragon’s mouth closes as Hiccup falls into darkness. His vest is caught in a spear sticking out of its throat. He sees two holes where smoke comes out . The digestive acid burns him when he touches. The dragon’s previous dinner is still happily singing. Hiccup finds he does come around to the dragon’s viewpoint while inside him and has to remind himself that he has to live. The spear starts to crack in half
18. Toothless decides to hide until the danger is over, but gets distracted on the highest point chasing birds and rabbits. When Stoic and the rest of the two tribes arrive, he demands Toothless show him where Hiccup is. Toothless takes him there just I. Time for them to see Hiccup be thrown into the air and go into the Green Death’s mouth. Toothless goes against dragon law and flies up the Green Death’s nose until it sneezes out Hiccup. As they both go flying, Toothless grabs Hiccup to help him land. Stoic put his shield over his son. The Green Death drains in breath, but can’t seem to produce any fire. Hiccup had plugged up it’s fire holes with his helmet which causes the dragon to explode. A tooth comes for Hiccup, but Stoic is able to use his shield to protect Hiccup.
19. Hiccup hears the Green Death’s death sing and knows it is over before he passes out. Toothless looks down at the would he got from the Green Death’s claw as he tries to dig the tiny dragon out of his nose. Toothless collapses. Hiccup wakes up days later surrounded by family and friends. He asks for Toothless and they tell him Toothless died and they are giving him the first Viking funeral for a dragon. Hiccup realizes Toothless is probably just in a sleep coma to heal himself and tuns ti stop the funeral before they burn Toothless to death. He is too late to stop the flaming arrows from hitting the boat with Toothless’ cold, lifeless body. As the ship is burning away to nothing, Toothless shoots into the air and flies around on fire to show off. He eventually put himself out in the water and goes ti Hiccup’s shoulder. The Vikings cheer in Hiccup the Useful and Toothless.
