How to Train Your Dragon 5
Cressida Cowell
1. Gobber takes the young Vikings out to train them how to ride dragons in order to herd reindeer. The summer day is unusually hot for Berk and none of the boys or their hunting dragons are excited except for Toothless. Toothless wants to eat one of the reindeer. Gobber explains their rising dragons are not fully grown and therefore will not be able to fly with them yet. They will have to learn to ride before they fly. He shows them the riding dragons, but they all asleep. When Gobber gets them up, the hillside is revealed and where there was once heather and all sorts of wildlife, it was all burnt up
2. Hiccup points out the burned hillside, but everyone blows off his theory of a rouge dragon. Hiccup was given first choice of a riding dragons and ended up picking a sad looking Windwalker he felt a connection with. Fishlegs got a Chickenpoxer he can’t seem to stay on top of. As they start herding the reindeer, Hiccup warns Toothless not to startle the reindeer, but Toothless cannot help himself and chases them off in all directions. The boys get extra practice while they have to round up the reindeer again. Just as the herd is going down the hill, the Vikings are cut off by flames. Hiccup think he sees something that looks like winged panthers flying through the woods
3. They boys, dragons, and remaining reinseer try to escape down the sides of the hill, but the fire circles around them. They let their riding dragons go, but Hiccup’s Windwalker stays at his side. Two reindeer are killed by what seems to be swords before any of them can see what is happening. Gobber flys to them on Goliath and starts to get the boys to safety two at a time. When he gets to Hiccup last, he tries to send him away on Goliath alone, but the creatures in the fire kill the dragon. The Windwalker tries to protect them from the heat of the fire as it closes in and the creatures stalk them.
4. The six black dragons in the fire release their claws and are about ready to attack when a man on a white dragon appears in the flames. He and his dragon fight them and end up killing two of the black dragons. The other four run away. Hiccup has to keep Toothless from coming out from hiding under his helmet to protect his little dragon. The man on the white dragon tells Gobber to get in his dragon and promises him Hiccup will be safe. He leaves his helmet with Goliath. The man gives Hiccup his cloak and tells him to get on his Windwalker and wrap himself up in the fireproof cloth. Hiccup does as the fire starts to reach him. The cloak remains cool and he covers his entire body with it. He tells the Windwalker to run and it does.
5. When they emerge from the fire, the Hooligans think the man is a Lava-Lout because he is wearing one of their suits. He takes off his mask and explains he has been a captive of the Lava-Louts working as a sword-smith for the last 15 years until the exterminators drove them off their island. The black dragons they saw in the flames were just a few of the babies that need an active volcano to hatch. He estimates there are 900k eggs getting ready to hatch. He takes off his mask to reveal he is Humongously Hotshot, a famous Viking hero. He advises them to leave before the rest of the dragons hatch. Stoick insists they will stay and fight. Humongously asks for directions to Berk. When he finds out he is already there, he decides to stay. Stoick asks him to take on a job as Hiccup’s bardiguard and he accepts after showing off his skills. He admits he refuses to sing, but can help teach Hiccup the other necessary skills he will need to be a Viking. Fishlegs is suspicious, but Hiccup is enamored.
6. Stoick is jealous of the attention Humongous gets. The Hooligans try to emulate his style while Hiccup is constantly talking about him. Humongous goes to Hiccup’s classes with him. He volunteers Hiccup to axe fight with Snotlout and ends up giving Snoutlout a real axe instead of a wooden one. When they are walking up the mountain, Humongous walks ahead of Hiccup and Fishlegs and calls out to warn them of a falling boulder they are just able to dodge. Humongous saves Stoick from eating a bad oyster one night at dinner and eats it himself saying he could tell it was bad just from looking at it. Other tribes arrive in Berk for the Sun’sday Sunday festival. That night, Hiccup wakes up as Humongous has his swords over his head and debates whether or not he should kill Hiccup. Toothless bites him. The hero decides not to kill him and yell Hiccup he will have to tell him his whole story and how he promised he would kill Hiccup.
7. Humongously Hotshot yells Hiccup the tale of how he fell in love with a beautiful Viking woman. Her father set him on an impossible task to get the fire-stone from the Lava-Louts, but even they did not know where it was. She broke her heart shaped ruby in half and gave him one of the pieces . She told him if he were to get captured, send his half back with his hunting dragon Xecellet, but the dragon died. Eventually, he made friends with a guard, Terrific Al. He took the gem to her, but she threw it into the sea and declared she had a new lover that had brought her the fire-stone. Hiccup gets a sinking feeling and asks for the woman’s name. He tells him it was Valhallarama, Hiccup’s mother.
8. Humongous continues the story. Stoick found the fire-stone inside the volcano, but it was what was keeping the volcano dormant. He tells how Al started off as a handsome young man, but retuned in shambles. When the exterminators started hatching, Al decided he was going to stay behind and attempt to train them. He erected statues all over the island in hopes it would convince them he is the leader. Hiccup realizes Terrific Al is really Alvin the Treacherous. Al asked Humongous to kill Hiccup for all that Hiccup had done to him. Humongous admits he was trying to kill Hiccup, but thinks he is a good person and ended up saving him each time. Hiccup tells him Old Wrinkly, who was the one who sent Humongous and Stoick after the fire-stone, is sitting in a hole in silence until the situation is resolved. He feels his interference was the cause of this mess and he doesn’t want to make it worse. Hiccup asks Humongous to go with him to see if they can get some advice. The shake hands in solidarity
9. Hiccup climbs down into the well Old Wrinkly is in to talk to his grandfather. He asks why Alvin would want to have Hiccup killed if the impending volcano eruption would be the end of them anyway. He think Alvin anticipates Hiccup ruining his plans. Old Wrinkly shows him a page in a book that has the a riddle of Lava-Lout Island. Hiccup realizes he might be able to stop the volcano from erupting by replacing the Firestone. He goes to the netting called “The Thing” where no one can speak unless they are holding the stolen Firestone.
10. There is a dip in Huge Hill that has steps cut into it to form an amphitheater. The Scary Librarian drops the firestone from above and each tribes warriors fight over it for the chance to speak. The Hooligans get the stone to Stoick and he asks them if they will run or fight the oncoming threat. They all agree to stay and fight. Hiccup tells Humongous to wait by the plinth to score the next touchdown. He asks Camicazi to help him get the Firestone so he can tell everyone his plan. She agrees. When the Scary Librarian calls for the next round, the tiny Viking girl is easily able to sneak the stone out of the scrum and throw it to Humongous. Stoick tries to intercept the stone, but Himongouse taunts him with it for a minute before slamming it down on the plinth and then giving it to Hiccup. Hiccup explains his plan to return the stone and has Himongous confirm there are hundreds of thousands of exterminators that are going to hatch. All of the tribes start to flee. Stoick takes back the stone and convinces his Hooligans to stay and announces his done is leaving. Hiccup says they will use to try to stop the volcano since the Hooligans refuse to leave Berk. Camicazi has already stolen the Firestone for their quest. Humongous turns to leave, but Hiccup stops him to remind him he needs to show them the way to Lava-Lout Island. Humongous agrees to get them to the island, but not to go any further than that. They borrow the fastest Hooligan ship, the Peregrine Falcon, and set sail.
11. They sail quickly to Lava-Lout Island and there seems to be a storm brewing. The island appears to be shaking. From the ship they can see the island is covered in eggs waiting to hatch from the eruption. Humongous drops them off on the beach and takes the boat out a bit in case they survive. Hiccup’s Windwalker stays on the boat.
12. The three young Vikings and Toothless start making their way to the volcano. They find the entire island is covered in exterminator eggs. The closer they get to the volcano, the closer the eggs are to hatching. There are also large statues of Alvin’s face all over the place. They can see the top of the volcano when a large, angry exterminator appears. It has a bit in its mouth and Alvin the Trecherous is riding it. He uses a whip to keep it under his control. Alvin greets Hiccup and exchanges his hook hand for his sword.
13. Stoick is disappointed in his son’s desertion. Snotlout comes to tell him they took the Peregrine Falcon to the west. Stoick stops to wonder why he would go west when all the other deserters were sailing South. Gobber tells Stoick Hiccups plan to return the Firestone. Stoick decides to go help his son
14. As Alvin attaches his sword to his arm, Camicazi takes off her waistcoat, wraps the Firestone inside it, and hides it behind them before Alvin notices. The three young Vikings pull out their swords. Alvin tells them how when he fell to the Sharkworms, one got his eye. He killed it and then crawled inside it to survive. He floated close enough to shore to swim back to Fort Sinister, but while exiting the dead, floating sharkworm, it’s jaws snapped shit and took off the bottom of his leg. Alvin blames Hiccup for his injuries and loses. He is surprised Humongous did my kill him. He had also ask Humongous to bring him the Firestone. The Exterminators are afraid of it and he wants to use it to better control them. He realizes that the kids must have it with them to try stopping the volcano from erupting. Toothless crawls out of Hiccup’s helmet and almost tells Alvin where the stone is. Alvin sends the Exterminator after Fishlegs and Camicazi. Fishlegs is pinned by one clawed hand within minutes. Camicazi puts up a fight, but is eventually pinned by the dragon’s other hand. Hiccup fights Alvin, who fights dirty. Alvin is able to use his hook and his shark bone peg leg to trip up Hiccup and get his sword away from him. Hiccup uses the spilled contents of Fishleg’s running-away-suitcase to fend off Alvin a little longer. Alvin admits he told Hiccup’s mother that Humongous was dead. Hiccup is able to get the bracelet off of Alvin’s wrist and sends Toothless to get it to Humongous. Eventually, Alvin gets the Stormblade to Hiccupe throat and demands the firestone.
15. Humongous is on the ship debating whether or not he has made the right decisions. He asks for a sign from the gods and that is when Toothless drops out of the sky with Alvin’s bracelet. Humongous recognizes it immediately as the bracelet he made for Terrific Al for taking the Heart stone to his love. It takes a flash of lightning for him to realize the ruby heart stone never made it to Valhallarama because it was added to the bracelet as the dragon’s eye. Humongous mounts his white dragon and tells the Windwalker that Hiccup needs them. The Windwalker picks up Toothless and follows Humongous.
16. Hiccup accepts his fate of dying by Alvin’s Stormblade and starts singing. Fishlegs and Camicazi join in. Just before Alvin can kill Hiccup, an arrow pierces his upper arm. Humongous appears to challenge Alvin, who the. calls the exterminator to him. They fight mounted atop their dragons. The three young Vikings watch for a moment before Humongous reminds them they have a quest to complete. Toothless is determined to be the hero and goes after the Firestone. He finds it quickly, but it is slippery from the rain. He drops it and it rolls down the mountain. The kids chase it, but Alvin abandons his fight to grab it and fly upward. It appears they have failed the mission and the volcano is about to erupt. The Windwalker speaks for the first time and says “desert.”
17. The injured white dragon is able to take Camicazi and Fishlegs and get herself back into the air. They make it to the Peregrine Falcon as Stoick and Bertha’s ships arrive. Hiccup tells Toothless to get the stone from Alvin and drop it into the volcano no matter what. He gets in the Windwalker, who is still not strong enough to fly. They start running down the mountain while Toothless takes off after Alvin. The volcano explodes.
18. The island shakes as the top half of the volcano is blown up and debris starts flying. Lava is running down the side at high speeds and quickly catching up to the Windwalker. The Exterminator eggs hatch as the lava reaches them. They recognize Alvin from his statues and see him atop one of their own. He also has the Firestone. He tells them to chase Hiccup and they obey, ready for the hunt. Toothless stays above the exterminators to stay out of sight. Alvin holds the Firestone over his head to enforce his control over the exterminators. Toothless uses the opportunity to grab the stone and disappear into the smoke. He drops the stone into the volcano. Stoick arrives just in time to see his son running from the lava and exterminators. The lava catches up with the Windwalker, who is fireproof. Hiccup stands on his back and surfs down the rest of the mountain. The Windwalker takes a leap at the end of the island and off a cliff. He attempts to fly, but his wings are not strong enough. They plummet into the sea. The Exterminators start to dive after them when the volcano erupts for a second time.
19. The whole world seems to shake at the second explosion. The Firestone was actually an egg of a fire dragon. It needed to be dropped into the molten lava of the volcano to hatch. The Vikings watch in awe as the enormous fire dragon starts hunting the exterminators without even leaving the volcano too. The Fire dragon plucks them all out of the sky with the dragon Alvin was on being last. Alvin swears he’ll be back for Hiccup. The fire dragon dives down into the volcano. The lava flow slows and the storm starts to clear up. The Vikings applaud and cheer as they realize they have been saved.
20. Hiccup floats in the water that has been warmed up from the lava while the Windwalker goes to show Stoick where he is. Once Toothless is certain the Exterminators and the Fire dragon is gone, he flies down the mountain to join Hiccup. They are pulled out of the water by Stoick. Humongous thanks Hiccup for his new life and gives him the bracelet with the ruby heart stone in it. Stoick offers him anything. Humongous asks for the Peregrine Falcon to go off and start his new life. Stoick is reluctant to let his favorite ship go, but is happy to watch humongous leave. Humongous sings a new song as he sails off and Stoick is pleased to learn he is a horrible singer. He starts the Hooligans singing along with him as they sail east towards Berk. The Bog Burglars also sing as they sail home to the south.
21. When they get home, Stoick and Hiccup go to retrieve Old Wrinkly from the hole he put himself in. When Valhallarama comes home, Stoick tells her what happened. She hides her face for a few minutes at the mention of Humongous, but then Carrie’s on as normal. Hiccup remembers the day she died in battle and thought he saw the other half of the ruby heart stone around her neck. He ends up taking his mother’s half and using it as the other dragon’s eye in the bracelet Humongous made. Hiccup wears the bracelet the rest of his life.
