How to Train Your Dragon 2
Cressida Cowell
1. Hiccup and his fellow Viking trainees are on a ship in the middle of a storm for the start of four years of pirate lessons taught by Gobber. Their dragons are below deck and Toothless complains about being hungry and having salt in his wings. Gobber volunteers Dogsbreath to start sword fighting lessons. Hiccup figures swordplay is genetic and since he is the great-great-grandson of the greatest swordsman of all time, he volunteers to face him. Fishlegs asks him if he is crazy, but Hiccup is confident his study of maneuvers will be sufficient.
2. The fight starts out well for Hiccup as he is faster than Dogsbreath and is able to dodge the first few attacks. Things take a turn when Hiccup slips on the deck and Dogsbreath gets a hold of him. Dogsbreath throw’s Hiccup’s new sword overboard and hits him on the head with his own sword. Dogsbreath tosses his own sword aside to beat on Hiccup more; Snotlout takes the protective cover off of it. Toothless sees an opportunity and bites Dogsbreath on the butt. Dogsbreath grabs his sword and in his state of rage tries to kill Hiccup. Just as Dogsbreath is about to finish him, a wave throws the ship into the air and it breaks in two as it hits the water. Hiccup treads water and tells Toothless to find Fishlegs because he can’t swim. Tooth returns and tells Hiccup that Fishlegs needs his help. Hiccup knows there isn’t anything he can do about it.
3. A wooden box with iron handles that had recently been tossed into the sea by the nearby Meathead tribe finds Hiccup. He grabs a handle and climbs on top just before another wave picks him up and slams him down near Toothless trying to help Fishlegs. They are able to get Fishlegs on board before they are washed to the shores of the Long Beach. Gobber is about to start their next lesson as the last of the boys arrive on shore, but they notice Hiccup and Fishleg’s box is actually a coffin with an end riot ion warning them not to open it.
4. Gobber has a few of the Viking boys take the coffin up to the village for Stoic and the counsel to decide what to do with it. Snotlout makes a big deal about how he would make a better chief for the tribe than Hiccup. He pulls out his sword for a demonstration and shows off a bit. Fishlegs mentions it is too bad Snotlout doesn’t have any brains. When the other boys are gone, Hiccup worries Snotlout is right. Fishlegs suggests Hiccups sword might have been part of the problem and he’ll need to practice. They follow slowly behind the others hoping the Vikings aren’t stupid enough to open a coffin that says not to open it.
5. Everyone is already gathered in the Great Hall to decide what to do with the coffin. Fishlegs, Hiccup, and Old Wrinkly are the only ones against opening it. Stoic Opens the coffin and Hiccup points out the body inside is moving. It sits up and the Viking panic. Old wrinkled yells out that it is not the corpse of Grimbeard the Ghastly. The man introduces himself as Alvin the Poor-but-Honest farmer. He says he has been looking for Stoic the Vast
6. Alvin says he found the coffin and decided to open it. The booby trap inside took his hand and he shows them his metal claw replacement. He the. Tells them he has a map and a riddle to get to Grimbeard’s treasure, but he cannot solve the riddle on his own. It mentions Grimbeard’s heir. Hiccup thinks the mention of Death ahead means the Skullions Island, but it is the home of a Glock of blind dragons that are so vicious no one has ever made it off the island. Alvin talks Dtoic and his followers into taking up the quest.
7. Everyone on the isle of Berk seems to like Alvin. The poor-but-honest farmer sees Hiccup practicing with his new sword and decides to give him some pointers. He sets aside his helmet, takes the claw off his right hand and replaces it with a device to hold his sword. He shows Hiccup the maneuver he was trying and the. Puts his sword away. When he puts his helmet back on, Toothless’ excrement goes all over his head. Toothless thinks Alvin is really an Outcast (tribe formed from Vikings to horrible to be part of normal tribes). The seed of doubt is planted in Hiccups mind. Hiccup struggles to get Toothless out the door to train for sniffing out treasure. When he finally gets him to participate, he does my find much. Snotlout shows off what Fireworm was able to find and is convinced he will become the heir to the hooligan tribe when he finds the treasure on the Isle of the Skullions. Hiccup has a feeling of dread.
8. There is a hundred old creature hidden in a cavern so deep it has never seen light. It is hungry and cranky and eats a little baby Nader that accidentally found it’s way to the creature
9. Snotlout shows off in the advanced Rudery class and is convinced he will become the heir to Berk by finding Grimbeard’s treasure. Stoic tells Hiccup and and Alvin have decided they will bathe before they go to the island so the Skullions won’t smell them. Stoic bathes his dragon and is convinced Hiccup will find the treasure.
10. Hiccup is able to drag Toothkess out of bed and meets the rest of the landing part and the Hooligan Harbor. Fishlegs is annoyed by Wartihog and another boy arguing about what dragon type might win against a Skullion. They board ship Lucky Thirteen and are off on their quest. When they make it to the island, they can hear the Skullions sharpening their claws in their sleep. Alvin gives a speech about how he is going to wait on the ship. Hiccup, Fishlegs, and Toothless take off in a direction Toothless thinks he smells something. They find a footprint that suggests the Skullions are at least twice as big as they thought. Toothless tells them where to dig, but all they find is a very large limpet shell. They here someone sound their whistle to indicate they have found the treasure and Hiccup hopes it isn’t Snotlout.
11. Everyone has gathered around Snotlout and the chained up box with Grimbeard’s name and warning not to open on it. Stoic plans to open it right there and Hiccup tries to talk him out of it. Stoic is so disappointed that Hiccup wasn’t the one to find the treasure, he ignores his son. Gobber cuts off the chains and Baggybum suggests Snotlout open the box since he and his dragon found it.
12. Snotlout finds treasure and the Stormblade (Grimbeard’s sword), but Stoic quickly takes it from him. Toothless is sickened by the stench coming from the box. Hiccup realizes the booby trap was to attract the Skullions to whoever opened the box. Hiccup warns his fellow Vikings and they all start to run. Stoic and Gobber carry the box. Hiccup tries to convince his father to give it up, but he has an odd, greedy look in his eye Hiccup has never seen before. Hiccup almost doesn’t make it and has to hide in a tree. Stoic let’s Baggybum take over carrying the box for him so he can rescue Hiccup as the Skullions tear the tree apart to get to him. Stoic’s dragon, Newtsbreath, Carrie’s Hiccup to the ship before going back to help his master. Stoic uses his axe to defend himself in a circular motion over his head while he attacks the monsters with the sword. He ends up riding a Skullion into the sea and swims back to the ship. He cleans off the sword blade on his shirt and yells out in victory.
13. The Vikings only take a moment to congratulate themselves for n a successful mission before starting to row their way back to Berk. When they are close to home, all of the dragons except Toothless fly home for food and rest. Stoic says Alvin is I’m entitled to ten percent of the treasure, but Baggybum points out it was Snotlout that found it and it is his. He goes in to say that Snotlout is the true heir and Stoic should retire. Alvin puts a heavy barrel over Toothless before going to calm down the fighting men saying there is enough treasure to go around. Black currant wine is past around to make a toast, but Stoic’s speech is interrupted.
14. The Hooligans are taken over by a group of Outcasts and each has a knife to the throat. They were able to sneak up on the Lucky Thirteen while Baggybum and Stoic were arguing. Alvin explains he is actually the chief of the outcasts as he takes the Stormblade and fastens it to the sword holder where his hand should have been. They have become civilized in some ways in order to be more dreadful pirates. They intend to take the captured Hooligans and sell them into slavery. All except Stoic and his descendants, who the Outcasts will eat. Alvin asks for clarification on who Stoic’s heir is and Snotlout hides. Hiccup offers himself up.
15. Toothless is able to knock his barrel over and rolls it and himself into Alvin. This gives Stoick and the other Hooligans the distraction they need to free themselves from the Outcasts and start fighting. Stoick and Baggybum fight back to back. Fishlegs goes into a Berserk trance and Snotlout does well on his own. Hiccup gets the key to free the Hooligans that have already been chained up. Toothless bites the leg of Outcast and the man drops his flare into the black current wine. The wine and the ship catch fire. Most of the Vikings abandon the Lucky Thirteen and head for the Outcasts’ ship. Hiccup tries to get Fishleg’s attention, but Fishlegs is hyper focused on killing Alvin. The mast goes down and flips the boat trapping Hiccup, Toothless, Fishlegs, and Alvin under the water in this particularly deep part of the sea.
16. Hiccup is tumbled around as the ship drags him down. Fishlegs grabs him and pulls him into an air pocket. Hiccup dives under and finds Alvin and brings him up as well. Alvin is still wanting to go after the treasure. Toothless wants to kill Alvin. Hiccup points out the air pocket is getting smaller.
17. Always good in a crisis, Hiccup sends Toothless out to see if they can swim to the surface. By the time Toothless returns, they are almost out of air. Toothless says they cannot make it to the surface, but he found a cave. Hiccup takes his a large breath before diving under to follow Toothless and dragging Fishlegs (who cannot swim) behind him. They make it to the cave and Hiccup starts trying to think of a way out. Toothless finds a door and they go to check it out. It says it should only be opened by Grimbeard’s heir. Hiccup doesn’t want to open it knowing that all the other warnings ended badly. He doesn’t believe he is Grimbeard’s heir. Alvin points out Hiccup was the one who volunteered as heir when he thought he was going to be cannibalized. He threatens to kill Hiccup if he doesn’t open the door. Hiccup reluctantly opens the door and they are all drawn in by the massive amounts of treasure. The boys and Toothless try to back out and leave Alvin there, but he catches them and starts to attack Hiccup. Toothless gets Hiccup a sword and Hiccup uses it in his left hand since his right shoulder is still dislocated. He realizes for the first time that he is left handed. He is able to fight of Alvin with Toothless swooping down to distract the Outcast. They fight through the cavern. Alvin goes up a mound of treasure that tears up on him.
18. An enormous Monstrous Strangulator (mix of dragon, octopus and snake) appears from under the pile. It grabs Alvin in one of its tentacles to take a look at him. Alvin slashes at it with the Stormblade. The Strangulator shows him it’s venomous tail and Alvin passes out in fear. The monster swallows him whole and Hiccup can see Alvin join the dragons the creature previously ate though it’s translucent body. Hiccup can tell it has trouble focusing because it’s brain is so small. A tentacle happens to grab him, but the creature doesn’t seem to notice until Fishlegs falls down while trying to help Hiccup and makes a commotion that draws the monsters attention. As he is being strangled, Hiccup says he was almost eaten by Seadragon Giganticus Maximus, who would have thought strangulation was the most basic way to kill. Hiccup calls Toothless over to him and gives him instructions. He then convinces the Strangulator to use it’s poison on him. As the needle like end of its tail comes closer to Hiccup, Toothless makes a quick dive in front of the monster’s eyes. It is upset that they are trying to trick him. Fishlegs wakes up just in time to see all of the poison injected into Hiccup.
19. Hiccup asks the Strangulator what will happen to him. Hiccup watches those things happen to the monster as it died. Fishlegs is shocked at what happened and Hiccup tells him while Toothless was distracting him, he pilot the tip of the tentacle under his shirt and that is where the poison was injected. Fishlegs suggests they use the caves to get out, but Toothless warns them there are worse monsters in the dragon caves. They return to the door they came in through and find a note from Grimbeard. He hid this treasure for his descendants because it was tearing the tribe apart. Hiccup remembers the greedy way Stoick acted and decides they will leave the treasure behind. Fishlegs is surprised Hiccup is willing to give up being a hero to protect the tribe. They go back out into the sea and get oxygen blown at them from Toothless (he also has gills) as needed. They find oars floating in the surface and use them to swim back to shore. They arrive in the village to find the place empty and every house closed up. Gobber sees them as he is about to close his window and starts alerting everyone of the news. Hiccup and his companions are carried to Stoick, who embraces his son. Snotlout is not happy no one seems to remember his victory on the Isle of the Skullions.
20. On night while inspecting the sword Toothless gave him in the cavern, Hiccup finds a note in the hollowed out handle. It is written by Grimbeard and says this was his favorite sword (the Stormblade always went a bit left). Hiccup writes his story as an old man hoping it will be found by a distant generation in the future that will do good with his knowledge.
